The “atomic Eiffel Tower” was a three-dimensional arrangement of individually trapped rubidium atoms, assembled with laser-based optical tweezers. It was not a tiny metal tower and not a finished, general-purpose quantum computer. The 2018 demonstration showed that researchers could build custom 3-D atomic geometries with single-atom control, creating a platform for future quantum simulations.
What the atomic Eiffel Tower really is
The image that inspired the phrase “atomic Eiffel Tower” shows atoms positioned at selected points in space so that their overall pattern resembles the famous Paris landmark. Each point represents an individual rubidium atom held in place by a focused laser trap. There is no solid surface, miniature beam or continuous material connecting the atoms.

The structure is therefore better understood as a programmable microscopic layout. Researchers choose where each atom should sit, create traps at those coordinates, and use additional moving tweezers to place atoms into the desired locations. The result can look like a tower, a flat lattice, a curved form or another three-dimensional design.

How the team assembled the structure
1. Create optical traps with focused lasers
A tightly focused laser beam can create an optical trap for a neutral atom. The electric field produces a potential that holds the atom near the focus without a physical container. By controlling the beam’s position and intensity, the apparatus can define many possible atom sites.
The experiment used holographic methods to generate a programmable pattern of trapping locations. Instead of making one fixed arrangement, the optical system could produce a set of sites corresponding to a chosen three-dimensional design.
2. Load atoms into the available sites
The initial loading process does not automatically place one atom in every desired position. Some traps contain an atom and others are empty, so the starting pattern is disordered. That randomness is a normal problem in assembling neutral-atom arrays and is why imaging and rearrangement are essential.

3. Image which traps are occupied
Fluorescence images reveal which trap locations contain atoms. The camera does not merely provide a picture for publication; it supplies the occupancy information needed by the control system. Once the apparatus knows where atoms are available, it can plan moves that fill the target pattern.

4. Move atoms with programmable tweezers
Fast, programmable moving optical tweezers transport selected atoms from occupied sites to empty target sites. The moves are coordinated so that atoms are placed one by one without losing the intended geometry. The Nature paper describes assembly atom by atom and plane by plane, allowing the system to build a genuinely three-dimensional object rather than only a single layer.
5. Verify the finished array
After rearrangement, fluorescence imaging checks whether the required sites are occupied. The 2018 paper reports “defect-free” arrays in the sense that the constructed target sites were filled as intended. This verification step is crucial: a visually suggestive pattern is not enough if atoms are missing or misplaced.
What the 2018 Nature paper demonstrated
Daniel Barredo and colleagues reported the assembly of “defect-free, arbitrarily shaped three-dimensional arrays, containing up to 72 single atoms” in Nature 561, 79–82, published on 5 September 2018. That figure is the primary paper’s maximum for its reported 3-D arrays; it does not mean that every illustrated shape contained 72 atoms.
| Statement | What it means | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 72 single atoms | The largest 3-D arrays reported in the Nature experiment contained 72 individually arranged atoms. | Primary result of Barredo et al., Nature, 2018. |
| Up to 100 individually addressable atoms | A larger figure appeared in a contemporary quotation about the techniques available to the team. | Simon Cornish, quoted by Andy Extance in Chemistry World in 2018; this quotation has a different scope from the paper’s 72-atom result. |
| Arbitrary 3-D shapes | The trap pattern and rearrangement process could be programmed for custom geometries rather than one fixed lattice. | Demonstrated capability of the assembly platform. |
The distinction between 72 and 100 is not a contradiction to be silently averaged away. The first number is the explicit maximum in the primary publication. The second is an attributed statement about the techniques then available, reported in a news article. They should remain identified with their respective sources.

Why three-dimensional control matters
Geometry is a resource in neutral-atom experiments. When atoms are arranged at selected distances and angles, researchers can investigate how interactions change with the layout. A programmable 3-D pattern can represent a model that would be difficult or impossible to realize with a simple one-dimensional chain or a fixed two-dimensional grid.
The platform is aimed particularly at quantum simulation: using a controllable quantum system to study the behavior of another system or mathematical model. A custom arrangement can encode the connectivity and spatial relationships required by a simulation. Because the atoms remain individually addressable, researchers can prepare, manipulate and measure specific sites rather than treating the array as an undifferentiated cloud.
That combination—custom geometry plus single-atom control—is the scientific significance of the Eiffel Tower demonstration. The visual shape is memorable, but the reusable capability is the programmable assembly method behind it.
Was the tower itself a quantum computer?
No. The experiment did not report a practical, general-purpose quantum computer, a useful computational advantage or a finished machine that could run ordinary algorithms. It demonstrated a method for arranging neutral atoms, with quantum simulation identified as a possible application.

| What the experiment established | What it did not establish |
|---|---|
| Single rubidium atoms can be assembled into designed 3-D arrays. | That the Eiffel-shaped arrangement was a functioning commercial computer. |
| Holographic traps and moving tweezers can produce custom geometries. | That the apparatus had delivered a useful general-purpose computation. |
| Fluorescence imaging can guide defect-free rearrangement. | That the illustrated tower had demonstrated quantum advantage. |
| The arrangement could serve as a platform for future quantum simulations. | That proposed simulations had all already been completed. |
Daniel Barredo was quoted as saying the team was ready to perform the first quantum simulations in tunable 3-D geometries using the platform. That is a statement of readiness and planned work, not a claim that the Eiffel-shaped array had already produced a completed simulation result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How this fits into the quantum-computing landscape
The Nature paper places neutral atoms among several investigated quantum-technology approaches, including superconducting circuits, quantum dots, photons and trapped ions. The paper does not provide a current ranking of those platforms, and this single demonstration cannot establish which approach is “best.”
A meaningful comparison requires several separate questions:
- What represents the quantum information? Different platforms use different physical systems, so a qubit is not the same kind of object in every approach.
- How is it held and controlled? Neutral-atom work uses laser traps and optical control; other platforms use their own confinement and control hardware.
- What geometries and interactions are available? The Eiffel Tower result is notable because the atom positions can be programmed in three dimensions.
- What has actually been demonstrated? A platform may show an assembly method, an analog simulation, or a general-purpose processor; those are different milestones.
- At what scale and with what reliability? Atom count alone does not describe control fidelity, error rates, connectivity or useful workload performance.
On those dimensions, the 2018 result is best described as an experimental neutral-atom assembly platform. It is evidence of precise geometric control, not a contemporary market comparison or a verdict on the entire field.

What “neutral atom” means here
Rubidium atoms are electrically neutral, unlike ions that carry a net charge. In this experiment, the atoms were manipulated with light rather than placed into a solid-state circuit. Optical tweezers provide movable, tightly localized traps, while holographic techniques create many sites at once.
Calling the atoms “single” means that occupancy is resolved at the level of individual atoms. Calling the array “three-dimensional” means the target positions occupy multiple planes, not merely a drawing projected onto a flat surface. These two properties—single-particle resolution and 3-D placement—are what make the demonstration more than an ordinary laser display.
What happened after the 2018 demonstration
Later neutral-atom simulator projects continued to treat optical-tweezer arrays as research platforms. A PASQuanS project interview discusses simulator development, validation and longer-term applications, while noting that areas such as quantum chemistry remained future goals. That context should not be read as a performance audit of every neutral-atom system available today.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe original paper’s statement that systems with hundreds of individually controlled qubits were within reach reflected the technology outlook of 2018. It was a projection based on the techniques then available, not a guarantee that every subsequent system would meet that scale or that scaling alone would produce useful computation.
How to read headlines about an “atomic tower”
- Look for the material: the tower consists of individually positioned rubidium atoms, not a solid nanoscale sculpture.
- Check the atom count and source: 72 is the maximum reported in the primary 2018 Nature paper; a 100-atom statement comes from an attributed contemporary news quotation.
- Separate assembly from computation: building a programmable array is an enabling experiment, not proof of a working general-purpose quantum computer.
- Identify the application as prospective: quantum simulation was the intended direction, while completed useful simulations were not the result reported by the tower demonstration.
- Ask what “scale” measures: the number of atoms says nothing by itself about error correction, algorithmic performance or commercial readiness.
Why the image remains scientifically useful
Science images often compress a complicated apparatus into one recognizable form. The Eiffel Tower analogy does that without changing the underlying result: a control system can translate a digital design into a three-dimensional arrangement of single atoms. Once that translation is reliable, the same machinery can be used for many geometries and experiments.
The enduring lesson is therefore not that a tiny Eiffel Tower became a computer. It is that researchers demonstrated a way to sculpt neutral-atom systems in three dimensions with exceptional specificity. That capability is a building block for quantum simulation and for future experiments that require programmable geometry.
