AI is helping with routine work, but the report suggests it has not yet resolved the deeper pressures around prioritization and collaboration.
The assigned headline’s “2007” does not match the official report: Atlassian calls it State of Product 2026. An SD Times article dated October 2, 2026, refers in its body to a “2027” report and cites a different 76% concern figure. That figure should not be treated as a result from Atlassian’s official 2026 report.

What the report says about product teams’ outlook
In Atlassian’s State of Product 2026, 84% of surveyed product teams expressed concern that their current products would not succeed in the market. The report breaks that down as 27% very concerned, 57% somewhat concerned, 14% not too concerned and 2% not at all concerned. These are survey responses, not a prediction that 84% of products will fail.

It does not establish why respondents are concerned or show that one particular management practice would change product outcomes.

Why teams say strategy work gets squeezed
Atlassian’s report says 49% of product teams lack enough time for strategic planning and roadmap development. That is a practical constraint: teams may be expected to shape direction while day-to-day responsibilities consume the time needed to evaluate opportunities and plan what comes next.
The report also finds a mismatch between the value placed on collaboration and who participates early. Eighty percent of surveyed product teams do not involve engineering in ideation, problem definition or roadmap creation. Separately, 49% cite competing incentives or internal politics as a barrier to collaboration. Together, those results suggest that product work can be constrained both by limited planning time and by difficulty aligning people around decisions.

Where AI helps—and where teams want more
The report’s AI findings describe a gap between the work teams want help with and where AI is commonly applied. Seventy-seven percent of respondents want AI to save time on routine tasks. Other desired benefits include accelerating high-impact tasks (52%), getting more comprehensive insights (42%) and improving collaboration and communication (41%).
Yet prioritization and planning were the least common AI use cases, even though they were among the most in-demand. Atlassian’s report says: “Prioritization and planning were the least common AI use cases – but unsurprisingly, they’re among the most in-demand, likely since product teams already find it hard to make time for these tasks.” In other words, automation may reduce some routine effort without automatically creating the time, context or shared judgment that strategic work requires.
Trust and security remain constraints
Forty-five percent of respondents cite a lack of trust in AI-generated outputs as a concern. The report also identifies data security as a challenge, with differences by company size: 43% of respondents at companies with more than 1,000 employees reported it, compared with 20% at companies with fewer than 50 employees. These are survey findings about reported concerns; they do not show that every organization has the same risk profile or policies.
What product leaders can take from the findings
The report’s recommendations include involving product teams in strategy and goals, using shared prioritization frameworks to improve collaboration, and investing in product operations. Those are Atlassian’s recommendations, not interventions proven by this survey to cause better product outcomes.

- Protect strategy time. If roadmap work is repeatedly displaced by routine demands, make planning time explicit rather than assuming it will happen between other tasks.
- Bring engineering into early decisions. The reported lack of engineering involvement in ideation, problem definition and roadmap creation makes early cross-functional participation a clear area for teams to examine.
- Use AI where the task and risks fit. Routine work is the most frequently sought time-saving use. For higher-impact tasks, teams still need to assess output quality, trust and security requirements.
- Make prioritization shared work. A common framework can help teams discuss trade-offs consistently, though the survey does not establish a single framework as best.
Atlassian’s Tanguy Crusson, Head of Product, Jira Product Discovery, writes in the report: “I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t pick any other job than product management today.” The optimistic sentiment sits alongside the report’s concerns: respondents see the work as worthwhile, but also describe limited time, collaboration barriers and pressure to deliver products that succeed.
Who was surveyed—and what the numbers represent
Atlassian’s report landing page describes its research as a survey of more than 1,000 product professionals across the US and Europe. The PDF’s detailed methodology gives a specific principal sample of 700 respondents in the US, Germany and France, conducted by Wakefield Research in 2025. Those respondents were at least manager level and worked at companies with 500 to 10,000 employees.
The PDF describes a separate global survey of 521 product managers for the AI section, also conducted in 2025. The two samples differ in geography, role coverage and question scope; they should not be added together or treated as one identical group. Accordingly, the report’s percentages describe its surveyed populations, not all product teams everywhere.
