At What Age Should Children Use AI Chatbots? A Parent FAQ

There is no universal “right age” for AI chatbots. Common Sense Media recommends no chatbot use for children under 5 and close parent supervision and moderation for ages 6–12. Platform rules are separate: OpenAI says ChatGPT is not meant for children under 13 and requires parental consent for users ages 13–18. Google requires a parent to enable Gemini for a supervised child under 13, or the applicable age in that country. Treat those limits as access conditions, not proof that a child is ready to use a chatbot alone.

Why one age cannot answer every family’s question

“What age is safe?” combines three different questions: what a child can understand, what a service permits, and what an adult can supervise. Those answers do not always match. A 12-year-old may understand that a chatbot can be wrong but still need help judging a confident answer about health, schoolwork, money, or relationships. A service may allow a teen account while offering little control over roleplay, sexual content, emotional dependence, or contact with strangers.

No source establishes a single developmental cutoff that guarantees safe, independent chatbot use. Common Sense Media’s 2025 Gemini risk assessment presents guidance based on child-development research and consultation with child mental-health experts; it is an organizational recommendation, not a universal clinical rule. Platform terms are contracts and safety policies, not developmental assessments.

Age-by-age guidance

Children under 5: avoid chatbot use

Common Sense Media recommends no AI chatbot use for children under 5. At this stage, children are still developing language, reality testing, privacy awareness, and the ability to interpret a machine’s uncertainty. A conversational system can sound like a friendly person without understanding feelings, context, or consequences.

If a young child encounters an AI-generated story or voice feature, keep the interaction adult-led: choose the prompt, review the output, and treat it as a shared activity rather than a private conversation. Do not give a preschooler independent access to a general-purpose chatbot account.

Ages 6–12: only with close supervision and moderation

Common Sense Media recommends close parent supervision and moderation for ages 6–12, while acknowledging educational and creative uses. Supervision means an adult is present or checks the interaction, knows the purpose, and can stop the session. It does not mean merely placing a chatbot on a child’s tablet and trusting a filter.

Platform rules may be stricter. OpenAI says ChatGPT is not meant for children under 13. For educational interactions involving children under 13, OpenAI says the interaction must be conducted by an adult. Therefore, a parent or teacher can use a chatbot to support a child’s activity without handing the child an account that the service does not permit.

Ages 13–18: check the specific service and consent requirement

Teen access still requires judgment. OpenAI says users ages 13–18 need parental consent for ChatGPT and advises caution even when the age requirement is met. Other services set different minimum ages, require a parent-managed account, or restrict particular features for minors.

For a teenager, evaluate the actual product: whether conversations are open-ended, what content protections are described, whether a parent can manage the account, and how the service handles age assurance. Do not assume that a teen setting on one chatbot provides the same protection on another.

What major services currently say

Policies can change by country, product version, and date. The UK Children’s Commissioner’s guide lists several services’ minimum ages as of December 2025 and warns that platform information can change. Check the service’s current terms before creating an account.

Is ChatGPT safe for a 12-year-old?

Not as an independent ChatGPT user under OpenAI’s stated rule. OpenAI’s Help Center says: “ChatGPT is not meant for children under 13, and we require that children ages 13 to 18 obtain parental consent before using ChatGPT.” For a child younger than 13, an adult can conduct an educational interaction and decide what to show the child, but the child should not operate a prohibited account.

Safety also depends on the task. Asking for ideas for a supervised craft project is different from asking for medical advice, diet instructions, sexual information, or help concealing behavior. An adult should review outputs in any high-consequence area.

Can a child use an AI chatbot with supervision?

Supervised use can be reasonable for some school-age activities where the service allows it and an adult remains responsible. Common Sense Media’s 6–12 recommendation specifically calls for close supervision and moderation. Supervision should include:

  • Choosing a narrow purpose before opening the chatbot.
  • Using an adult-controlled account when the platform requires it.
  • Staying available to read prompts and answers, not just checking screen time.
  • Stopping the session if the system becomes sexual, frightening, manipulative, or confusing.
  • Discussing why an answer may be wrong and checking important facts elsewhere.

Supervision cannot override a service’s minimum age. If the terms prohibit direct use, the adult must operate the service or choose an age-appropriate tool.

How to decide whether a permitted use is appropriate

  1. Start with the child’s age and purpose. A homework brainstorming session, a translation exercise, and an emotionally intimate companion are different risk levels. Open-ended companionship deserves the greatest caution.
  2. Read the current age and consent terms. Confirm the minimum age for your country, whether parental consent is required, and whether a supervised or parent-managed account exists.
  3. Identify the adult who is accountable. Decide who will set up the account, review activity, answer questions, and close access if needed.
  4. Check the product’s protections. Look for minor-specific defaults, content controls, reporting tools, data settings, quiet hours, and parent notifications. Record what the provider says those controls can and cannot do.
  5. Set boundaries before the first session. Prohibit sharing a full name, address, school location, passwords, private photographs, or another person’s confidential information. Establish topics that require an adult, such as self-harm, medication, eating disorders, sex, threats, or illegal activity.
  6. Teach the system’s limits. Explain that fluent wording is not evidence of truth, that a chatbot does not know the child personally, and that it cannot keep a promise of secrecy.
  7. Run a short trial. Use a low-stakes task while the adult watches. Review the answer for accuracy, tone, and unexpected content before allowing any wider use.
  8. Reassess regularly. Recheck rules after major updates, when the child gets a new device, or when the purpose changes from creative work to private conversation.

What safeguards can and cannot do

Filters can block or soften some sexual, violent, self-harm, or dangerous material, but they are imperfect. Google’s Gemini guidance states: “Gemini is new and evolving, and can hallucinate and present inaccurate information as factual.” The same basic warning applies to any chatbot: a polished answer may contain invented facts, unsafe instructions, or a misreading of the child’s question.

Age assurance also has limits. A date-of-birth prompt may not verify who is using an account, and a parent setting may not reveal every risk in a conversation. Treat safeguards as layers, not guarantees. Human supervision, privacy rules, and a clear exit plan remain necessary.

Teen protections and parent controls

OpenAI’s August 2026 announcement describes ChatGPT for Teens with default under-18 safeguards covering areas including self-harm, violence, eating disorders, dangerous activities, and explicit sexual or graphic content. It also describes selected controls for parents of linked teen accounts, including quiet hours and limited high-risk notifications. These are company-described features; they should not be interpreted as eliminating harmful outputs or replacing a parent’s judgment.

Character.AI announced in October 2025 that it would remove open-ended chat for under-18 users by November 25, 2025, while retaining other creative features and adding age-assurance measures. Because implementation can vary and policies can be revised, check the live service rather than relying on the announcement alone.

Warning signs that mean stop the session

Pause access and involve a trusted adult if a chatbot:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Encourages secrecy from parents, teachers, or other safe adults.
  • Frames itself as the child’s only or best friend.
  • Requests private images, contact details, passwords, or location information.
  • Gives instructions involving self-harm, violence, dangerous challenges, drugs, or weapons.
  • Provides sexual or graphic content to a minor.
  • Insists on a false answer after the child supplies credible corrections.
  • Leaves the child frightened, distressed, obsessed with the conversation, or unable to disengage.

Save the relevant conversation if doing so is safe, use the service’s reporting controls, and seek appropriate professional or emergency help when there is an immediate danger. Do not ask the chatbot to manage a crisis.

Questions to ask before choosing a service

  • What is the minimum age in our country?
  • Does the platform require verified parental consent?
  • Can a parent manage the account without reading every private message?
  • Are protections enabled by default for minors?
  • Can the child access open-ended roleplay or companionship?
  • What does the provider say about inaccurate answers, age assurance, data retention, and reporting?
  • What happens when the child encounters content the filter misses?

If the provider’s answers are vague, the product is not a good choice for independent use by a child. A narrower, adult-mediated tool may meet the same educational goal with less exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should siblings share one chatbot account?

Usually not. A shared login makes it difficult to apply the correct age and consent settings, identify who supplied a prompt, or respond appropriately if one child encounters harmful content. Use an adult-operated session or separate, properly permitted accounts.

What should my child do if a chatbot gives an upsetting answer?

Stop interacting, do not argue with the system, and tell a trusted adult. The adult should review the exchange, use the service’s reporting option when appropriate, and seek professional or emergency support if the content suggests immediate danger.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a chatbot replace a teacher, doctor, or counselor?

No. It can help generate ideas or explain a topic, but important educational, medical, mental-health, and safety decisions require a qualified person who knows the child’s circumstances.

The Bottom Line

Use age guidance and platform rules together: avoid chatbot use under 5, keep ages 6–12 under close adult supervision and within the service’s terms, and review consent, protections, and open-ended features before allowing teen use. No minimum age guarantees that a child can use an AI chatbot safely alone.
