1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose the Audio-Technica AT-ERP3 for ordinary noise and the AT-ERP5 for concerts. The ERP3 carries the higher published attenuation figures (SNR 26 dB, NRR 19 dB), while the ERP5 uses music-oriented filtering that is intended to keep a live mix sounding more natural (SNR 21 dB, NRR 14 dB). Those numbers come from Audio-Technica, not an independent laboratory test.
In a hands-on comparison, Expert Reviews’ Andy White preferred the ERP5 at a loud festival and the ERP3 for everyday sounds such as voices and keyboard clicks. He found the difference subtle, and explicitly said he did not have the tools to verify Audio-Technica’s exact figures. Your seal, tip size and tolerance for pressure will determine the protection you actually experience.

What the two earplugs are designed to do
AT-ERP3: stronger everyday attenuation on paper
Audio-Technica presents the ERP3 as an option for people who experience stress from ordinary environmental noise. Its higher stated SNR and NRR make it the logical starting point when your priority is taking the edge off speech, office activity, street noise or other recurring sounds rather than preserving a concert mix.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The ERP3 is a passive earplug. It does not use batteries, Bluetooth or an app; the acoustic result comes from the earpiece seal and its filter. Audio-Technica lists four earpiece sizes—XS, S, M and L—so you can select the smallest tip that seals without creating excessive pressure. The plugs weigh about 1.2 g each and come with a carrying case.
That combination makes the ERP3 practical for carrying between locations. You can keep it in a work bag, pocket or coat and use it whenever routine noise becomes tiring. The case also gives the tips a cleaner place to stay than a loose pocket. If you regularly use the plugs, inspect the earpieces before leaving home rather than discovering a split or loose tip at a busy venue.
AT-ERP5: a concert-oriented compromise
The ERP5 is aimed at live music. Its lower published attenuation ratings are deliberate: the product uses music-focused eartips and dual-layer filtering dampers intended to reduce harmful loudness while retaining more of the balance and detail of a performance. That makes it a different tool from the ERP3 rather than a higher-priced version of the same design.

The ERP5 product information used for this comparison is from Audio-Technica’s Hong Kong site. Because regional pages can list different accessories or specifications, verify the local listing for included tips, case details and replacement parts before purchase.
Concert-goers should also think about how long the plugs will stay in. A set can last several hours, and White reported wearing the ERP5 through festival sets longer than 90 minutes. The model’s value is therefore not just its nominal rating, but whether you can keep it fitted comfortably while still following the performance.
How the published noise ratings compare
Audio-Technica lists two figures for each model:
- ERP3: SNR 26 dB and NRR 19 dB.
- ERP5: SNR 21 dB and NRR 14 dB.
On the manufacturer’s figures alone, the ERP3 has the greater stated attenuation in both systems. The five-point difference in each listed rating is useful for ranking the two products, but it should not be read as a guaranteed difference for every person or every sound. These are product ratings, not a promise that every wearer will experience exactly that reduction. A plug that is the wrong size, inserted poorly or displaced by jaw movement cannot deliver the same seal as a correctly fitted plug.
Do not treat the numbers as the result of the Expert Reviews test. White wrote: “I don’t have the tools to verify the exact numbers Audio-Technica claims the earplugs reduce noise by”. His observations describe perceived sound in specific situations, not a controlled measurement of decibel reduction.

The ratings also do not answer the music-quality question on their own. A higher figure may suit an office or street, while a lower figure may be preferable when you need to hear a band’s vocals and instruments with less muffling. Use the rating as one selection point, then match it to the sound environment and the type of listening you want.

Filter design: why the quieter plug is not automatically better for music
ERP3’s sealed tips
The review describes the ERP3’s tips as sealed and says they reduce mid- and high-frequency sound more strongly. That characteristic helps with the sharpness of routine noise: voices, clicking keys, mouse buttons and similar sounds are less prominent. The trade-off is that music and speech can sound more closed-in, which is acceptable if your goal is concentration or relief from a busy environment.
For commuting or an open-plan office, reducing those conspicuous mid- and high-frequency sounds can feel more useful than preserving every musical detail. The ERP3 is also the clearer choice when you want the higher published rating and do not need to hear a performance naturally. It remains a passive plug, so there is no charging schedule or electronic mode to select.
ERP5’s open, damped approach
The ERP5’s open tips and dual-layer dampers are intended to preserve musical balance. At a festival, White reported a more rounded sense of the tracks with the ERP5 than with the ERP3. You still hear the performance, but at a lower and less aggressive level. Because the filtering is lighter on paper, the ERP5 is not the choice for the maximum published attenuation between these two models.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall“Open” does not mean unprotected. It describes the acoustic path and tuning of the tip; the ERP5 still uses a filter designed for loud music. It also does not mean the sound will be identical for every ear. Ear shape, insertion depth, venue acoustics and the fit of the tip all affect the result.
At a festival, the ERP5 can therefore make sense when you want to leave the plugs in for a complete set rather than repeatedly removing them to hear conversation or songs. You should still take breaks from loud sound and move away from unusually powerful sources. Music-focused filtering is not a reason to stand directly beside a speaker stack.
What the hands-on comparison found
White used both models at home, in an office, on the street and at a festival. His conclusion was use-case specific:
- At the loud festival, he preferred the ERP5 because tracks sounded more balanced and rounded.
- For everyday noise, the ERP3 took more of the edge off voices and keyboard or mouse clicks.
- The audible difference was subtle rather than dramatic.
- He wore the ERP5 through sets lasting longer than 90 minutes and used the ERP3 for most of a day without irritation.
Those are subjective observations from one wearer. They are useful for understanding the design goals, but they cannot establish a population-wide comfort result or verify the stated SNR and NRR.
His experience also illustrates why buying solely on the highest number can be misleading. The ERP3 reduced more of the everyday detail he noticed, yet the ERP5 was the one he preferred for a music event. If you split your time between both situations, your decision may come down to which environment is more frequent or more difficult for you, rather than to a single “best” model.

Fit and comfort: the decision most likely to change your result
Passive earplugs only work as intended when the tip seals the ear canal without causing painful pressure. Start with the smallest ERP3 tip that remains secure, then move up if outside sound leaks around the plug. A larger tip is not automatically better: an oversized earpiece can create pressure, especially when worn for hours or when you sleep on your side.
The ERP3 listing documents XS, S, M and L tips, which gives it a clearly specified range for different ear canals. The cited ERP5 regional page describes music-focused eartips but does not provide a complete size breakdown in the available information, so confirm what your local package contains.
Check the seal with familiar sounds before entering a loud venue. Speak, walk and move your jaw. If the tonal balance changes sharply when you chew or talk, the plug may be moving. Refit it or try another tip size. Never force an earpiece into the canal; discomfort is a reason to stop and reassess the fit.

It is reasonable for one side to need a different size, provided the package gives you that option. Pay attention to pressure after an hour, not only during the first minute. A tip that feels fine in a shop can become distracting during a full workday or a long festival set.
Can you sleep in the ERP3 or ERP5?
White tried sleeping in both models. As a side sleeper, he felt slight pressure from each plug. He also found moldable silicone sleeping plugs more effective for blocking a nearby camper’s snoring. That does not make the ERP3 or ERP5 unsuitable for every sleeper, but it shows why a concert or everyday-noise plug should not be assumed to be a dedicated sleep plug.
If you test either model in bed, begin during a short nap rather than an entire night. Try both sides, check for soreness after removal and stop if you feel pain, numbness or persistent pressure. A plug that is comfortable while sitting upright can press against the pillow when you turn onto your side.
For occasional travel, you may prefer to carry a separate sleeping solution rather than compromise the fit of the plug you use at concerts or work. White’s moldable silicone comparison is a personal observation, not a claim that one sleep product will suit everyone.

Do not assume that a replacement earpiece listed for one regional package will fit every configuration. Match the part number to the model and follow the current manufacturer instructions. If a tip becomes loose, distorted or visibly damaged, replacing it is preferable to continuing with an uncertain seal.
ERP5 accessory details
The Hong Kong ERP5 page used here does not state the complete case or replacement-part package. Those omissions are regional product-page details, not evidence that an accessory is unavailable. Read the local specification and package contents before assuming you will receive a case or can order replacement tips.
When comparing the total cost, include any replacement tips, delivery charges and local taxes shown by the seller. The original article’s prices are useful context, but they do not establish what a current UK or overseas package contains.
Which model should you choose?
Choose the ERP3 when everyday noise is the problem
- You want the higher published SNR and NRR.
- Your main situations are office activity, street noise, travel or general noise stress.
- You prefer stronger reduction of mid- and high-frequency sounds, even if music sounds less open.
- You value four documented tip sizes and an included case.
Choose the ERP5 when you attend concerts or festivals
- You want to hear a live performance with its balance and detail largely intact.
- You accept lower published attenuation in exchange for music-oriented filtering.
- You expect to wear the plugs through long sets and prefer a less closed-in presentation.
- Your priority is reducing loudness without making the performance feel heavily muffled.
Consider another type of plug when your requirements differ
The cited reviews also name Loop Quiet 2, Loop Experience 2, Alpine MusicSafe Pro and D’Addario dBud as alternatives. They use different filter or attenuation approaches, but the available comparison does not establish current specifications, fit ranges or prices for them. Verify those details against each manufacturer’s current information rather than assuming they match either Audio-Technica model.
Neither the ERP3 nor ERP5 is an adjustable electronic protector. If you need to change attenuation between environments, look specifically for a product whose current documentation describes adjustable filtering; do not infer that capability from the presence of interchangeable tips.
An alternative may be worth considering if neither Audio-Technica product supplies the tip sizes, replacement system or wearing style you need. Make the comparison on documented attenuation and fit information, not on a product name that merely suggests “music” or “quiet”.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Price and availability: how to read the dated figures
The Expert Reviews article dated 14 August 2026 listed the ERP3 at £18 and the ERP5 at £22; its ERP3 product card displayed £17.50. These figures establish the price context of that article only. They may change with retailer, country, tax, shipping and promotions. Audio-Technica’s ERP3 release date is listed as 13 March 2026, while the cited ERP5 page is regional. Check a current local product page for stock, package contents and currency before making a purchase.
The £4 difference in that comparison should not determine the decision by itself. Paying slightly more for the ERP5 may be sensible if you attend concerts regularly and will keep its music-focused filter in place. Conversely, the ERP3’s lower article price and documented case may be more useful for everyday carry. Confirm the checkout total and what is included before treating either as the better value.

Practical fitting checklist before a loud event
- Inspect the tips. Confirm that the silicone or eartip is clean, intact and firmly attached.
- Start small. For the ERP3, begin with XS or S if those sizes fit your ear; move up only when the plug does not seal securely.
- Insert gently. Seat the plug so it seals without sharp pain or excessive pressure.
- Test movement. Talk, chew and turn your head. Refit if the seal breaks or the sound changes noticeably.
- Check both ears independently. Ear canals are not always the same size; one ear may need a different tip size.
- Carry the case. Remove the plugs during quiet breaks, store them cleanly and reinsert them before the next loud segment.
Put the plugs in before the music starts, when it is easier to fit them calmly. Keep the case accessible rather than buried under clothing, and do not share used eartips without cleaning them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Hearing protection is not a licence to stand beside a speaker stack indefinitely. Move farther from extreme sound sources, take breaks and follow the venue’s safety guidance.
Bottom line for the ERP3-versus-ERP5 decision
The AT-ERP3 is the better fit for everyday noise because it has the higher manufacturer-stated attenuation and a sealed, more strongly filtering tip design. The AT-ERP5 is the better fit for concerts because its music-focused, dual-layer filtering is intended to preserve the character of a live mix, and a hands-on reviewer preferred it at a festival. Neither result is a guarantee: the published ratings were not independently verified in the cited test, and your ear shape and tip seal determine how much protection you actually receive.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Audio-Technica model is better for everyday noise?
The AT-ERP3 is the everyday-noise model. It has the higher manufacturer-stated ratings—SNR 26 dB and NRR 19 dB—and its sealed tips are described as reducing more mid- and high-frequency sound. That makes it the more direct choice for office activity, street noise and routine environmental sound.
Which model should I use at a concert or festival?
The AT-ERP5 is designed for live music. Its music-focused eartips and dual-layer filtering dampers are intended to preserve more of a performance’s balance, although its published ratings are lower at SNR 21 dB and NRR 14 dB. Andy White preferred its sound at a loud festival.
Are the SNR and NRR figures independently tested?
Not in the hands-on comparison. Audio-Technica publishes the figures, but White wrote that he did not have the tools to verify the exact numbers. Treat them as manufacturer specifications for comparing the models, not as a guarantee of the reduction you will personally receive.
Can I sleep wearing the ERP3 or ERP5?
You can test either, but neither is presented as a dedicated sleep plug. White experienced slight pressure as a side sleeper and found moldable silicone sleeping plugs more effective against nearby snoring. Try a short nap first and stop if you feel pain, numbness or persistent pressure.
Do the two models include the same tips and accessories?
No complete like-for-like package is documented. Audio-Technica lists XS, S, M and L tips and a carrying case for the ERP3, plus separately sold ER-CKM53 replacement earpieces. The cited Hong Kong ERP5 page does not provide a complete size, case or replacement-part list, so check your local listing.

What prices were used in the comparison?
The Expert Reviews article published on 14 August 2026 listed the ERP3 at £18, with a £17.50 ERP3 product-card price, and the ERP5 at £22. Those are dated UK reference prices, not live quotes. Retailer, tax, shipping, promotions and regional availability can change the total.
Can I use the ERP3 for music and the ERP5 for everyday noise?
You can, but their tuning points in the opposite direction. The ERP3 may make music sound more closed-in while reducing everyday sound more strongly. The ERP5 may leave more routine sound audible but is intended to keep concerts sounding balanced. Choose based on the environment you encounter most.
Are either of these earplugs adjustable?
No adjustable electronic or variable-attenuation function is documented for either model. They are passive plugs with fixed filter designs. Interchangeable or differently sized tips affect fit, not an electronic change in attenuation.
The Bottom Line
Pick AT-ERP3 for everyday noise and the higher published attenuation; pick AT-ERP5 for concerts and a more natural live-music presentation. Fit, comfort and your individual seal matter more than the headline numbers alone.
