At about three years old, Anderson Taylor watched a dinosaur program, went outside, and searched the limestone gravel in his driveway. He found a crinoid fossil. Years later, a family trip to Scotland gave him an idea: build a museum of his own. With persistent public presentations and help from his community, he opened the Cambridge Natural History Museum in Cambridge, Illinois, in 2024.

His first fossil came from the driveway

Taylor has said he was around three when a dinosaur show prompted him to look for fossils outside his home. In a profile published by The Daily Galaxy, he recalled going into the driveway and finding a fossil in the limestone gravel. The feature identifies it as a crinoid, a marine animal whose fossil remains can be found in limestone.

“limestone is legitimately just fossils,” Taylor said in the profile. The chance discovery became an early spark for an interest he says he has had throughout his life.

A museum visit in Scotland made the idea feel possible

In 2022, Taylor’s family visited Scotland and stopped at the Staffin Dinosaur Museum on the Isle of Skye. The Daily Galaxy reports that he also searched a nearby beach for dinosaur footprints. The museum visit helped him picture what he might create at home. Guinness World Records quotes Taylor saying, “When I went to Scotland,” Anderson said, “I went to the Staffin Dinosaur Museum and that’s what inspired me to make this museum. I’ve been into dinosaurs and fossils all my life.”

How Taylor turned the idea into a museum

He made the case to local leaders

Taylor gave presentations at the village office to explain his plan. Local leaders then let him use a former fire station and village hall in Cambridge, Illinois. As he told Guinness World Records, “I found a building first, after doing tonnes of talks at the Village Office here in town. [The space] used to be the fire station, the village hall, and now it is the museum.”

Neighbors helped fill the space

Community members contributed display cases and objects, and fundraising helped the project move forward. Taylor told Guinness, “After that, they started giving me items to display, display cases, and then after like a month or so we started getting funding.” Guinness reported that he had raised $20,000 at the time of its 2026 interview. Separately, The Daily Galaxy reported more than $20,000 in fundraising and $8,000 in Illinois Humanities microgrants; those figures describe different reported totals and should not be treated as interchangeable.

The Tully Monster connects the collection to Illinois

The Daily Galaxy reported that the museum has three Tully Monster specimens and that visitors especially favor them. The Tully Monster, or Tullimonstrum gregarium, is Illinois’ state fossil. The Illinois State Museum says it lived about 300 million years ago during the Pennsylvanian Period. Its fossils are locally common but have not been found elsewhere on Earth, giving Taylor’s collection a distinct connection to the state’s natural history.

A record-setting curator who shares what he learns

When the museum opened, Taylor was nine years and 340 days old. Guinness World Records recognizes him as the youngest person to curate a museum (male), and says he is the museum’s sole owner and curator. That record describes his age at the opening on 10 August 2024; it does not mean he was 11 when the museum first opened.

Taylor gives tours and presents programs at libraries and schools. Illinois Humanities also reports that he has presented programs for libraries, schools, and other local organizations. The museum’s current hours, admission arrangements, and tour-booking details are not established in these published accounts, so check directly with the museum before planning a visit.
