Choose the ASUSTOR Lockerstor 2 Gen2+ AS6702T v2 if your setup can use its extra NVMe expansion or faster Ethernet; choose the TerraMaster F2-423 if its lower-tier connectivity and expansion are enough and its current price makes sense. The ASUSTOR’s clearest hardware advantages are four NVMe slots and two 5GbE ports. The F2-423 has two NVMe slots and two 2.5GbE ports, but a higher manufacturer-stated memory ceiling. Neither manufacturer’s specifications establish which NAS is faster in real-world use. Because the F2-423 is an older model with a named successor, compare its current price and software update path before buying.

Identify the exact ASUSTOR revision before comparing prices

“LOCKERSTOR 2 Gen2” and “LOCKERSTOR 2 Gen2+” are easy to confuse in product listings. The comparison here is specifically with the LOCKERSTOR 2 Gen2+ AS6702T v2. ASUSTOR also has an earlier AS6702T called LOCKERSTOR 2 Gen2; it is a different revision. A listing that says only “AS6702T” may not make the distinction clear, so check the model suffix and product details rather than assuming the listing refers to the v2.

This matters particularly for Ethernet: the v2’s manufacturer specifications list dual 5GbE, while the earlier model’s materials describe a different configuration. Do not apply specifications for one revision to the other. The v2’s stated processor is an Intel Celeron N5105, with four cores, and its memory is listed as 4GB DDR4-2933 SO-DIMM.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

TerraMaster’s F2-423 specifications are documented in a Chinese-language manufacturer datasheet. Its stated processor is an Intel Celeron N5095, also a four-core chip. When checking a regional listing, verify that the product is actually the F2-423 and that its included configuration matches what you intend to buy.

These are manufacturer specifications, not results from a controlled head-to-head test. The F2-423 specifications above come from TerraMaster’s Chinese-language datasheet, so check the relevant regional documentation and your exact unit before relying on a configuration detail. Specifications describe potential capabilities; they do not establish transfer rates, application responsiveness or reliability under your workload.

What the network ports mean for your setup

Choose 5GbE only if the rest of the network can use it

The AS6702T v2’s two 5GbE ports are useful only if the connection beyond the NAS can carry traffic at that rate. The client computer, switch or direct connection, cabling, and storage workload all matter. A 5GbE NAS connection plugged into a slower network path cannot make that path run at 5GbE. Likewise, two fast ports do not automatically mean a single computer will receive twice the speed; that depends on the network arrangement and how clients use the connections.

Before paying for the faster interface, trace the route from the NAS to the device that will access it. Check the client’s Ethernet capability, any switch between the devices, and whether the cabling and configuration support the intended connection. If your computers and network equipment are limited to lower speeds, the F2-423’s dual 2.5GbE ports may already be sufficient for the links you can use.

Link aggregation is not the same as one faster connection

TerraMaster says the F2-423’s two 2.5GbE links can provide up to 5Gb aggregate bandwidth with link aggregation. That is an aggregate figure, not a promise that one client or one file transfer will use both links as though they were a single 5GbE port. The network equipment and configuration must support the arrangement, and the distribution of traffic across links depends on the network and clients.

Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

For a home or small office with several devices accessing the NAS, multiple links can be useful when the overall traffic is spread across clients. For a single workstation moving large files, confirm that the complete path and client setup can take advantage of the connection you choose. The manufacturers’ port specifications alone are not enough to predict a real transfer rate.

How many NVMe slots do you need?

The AS6702T v2 offers four PCIe 3.0 M.2 NVMe slots; the F2-423 offers two. That is the ASUSTOR’s most straightforward expansion advantage. It gives a buyer more physical M.2 positions to plan around, but slot count by itself does not establish which NAS supports a particular SSD, storage arrangement or cache mode. Confirm the intended use and compatibility for the exact model before buying drives.

Ask what role an NVMe SSD would play in your NAS. If your plan includes M.2 drives, check whether the device and software support the specific storage or caching arrangement you want, and whether the SSDs are compatible. If you do not expect to install NVMe drives, the extra slots may not justify choosing one enclosure over the other. A larger number of slots is an expansion option, not a guarantee of a noticeable speed improvement for every workload.

There is also a practical software consideration for the F2-423: TerraMaster’s official TOS 7 release notice includes this model and cautions owners who have their system installed on, or plan to install it on, an M.2 NVMe SSD. For that situation, TerraMaster says to follow its guide to adjust BIOS boot order before updating. Treat that as a specific update step for the described configuration, not evidence that every F2-423 installation has a boot issue.

Memory ceilings and upgrade planning

The manufacturers list different maximum memory capacities: 16GB for the AS6702T v2 and 32GB for the F2-423. Both are listed with 4GB installed, but the F2-423 datasheet describes its memory as dual-channel while ASUSTOR specifies DDR4-2933 SO-DIMM. These figures make the F2-423 the higher-capacity option on paper; they do not establish that every memory module will work or that the additional capacity will improve a particular workload.

If you expect to upgrade RAM, confirm the supported memory type and capacity for the exact revision before ordering. Do not select a module just because its general specifications appear to match. The manufacturer-stated maximum is a useful planning limit, but compatibility can depend on module characteristics and the device revision. Include the cost of a verified compatible upgrade in the total purchase comparison rather than comparing enclosure prices alone.

For a buyer planning only basic file storage, the included memory may be adequate for the intended workload; for more demanding services or multiple simultaneous tasks, memory capacity may become a more relevant selection factor. The available specifications do not provide a controlled test showing how either unit behaves at a particular memory configuration, so make the choice based on required capacity and confirmed compatibility rather than an assumed performance lead.

Two drive bays shape the storage plan

Each enclosure has two SATA bays, so each can house two 2.5- or 3.5-inch SATA drives as specified for the ASUSTOR, while TerraMaster describes the F2-423 as a two-bay storage server. Both manufacturers list Single, RAID 0 and RAID 1 among the available SATA configurations; the F2-423 datasheet also describes online capacity expansion and migration.

With two bays, the choice between RAID modes affects capacity, availability and risk. RAID 1 mirrors data across the two drives, which can keep the volume available after one drive fails, but it is not a backup: accidental deletion, malware, theft, damage to the NAS or other events can still affect the data. RAID 0 combines capacity but offers no drive-failure redundancy. A Single-disk arrangement also lacks that redundancy. Select a configuration based on the consequence of losing data, not just the amount of usable space.

Budget for the drives as part of the system. Neither enclosure’s two-bay design removes the need to decide drive capacity, compatibility and backup destination. If the data matters, plan a separate backup copy—such as another storage device or a suitable external destination—and verify accessory compatibility. RAID and backup solve different problems.

Software support and the F2-423’s age

The F2-423 uses TerraMaster’s TOS operating system. TerraMaster’s official TOS 7 release notice lists the F2-423 among applicable models and says the update applies from TOS 6.0.794. Check the NAS’s installed TOS version and the current instructions before updating, particularly if the system is installed on an M.2 NVMe SSD. The boot-order guidance applies to the specified M.2 system-installation scenario.

TerraMaster announced the F2-424 as an upgrade to the F2-423, specifying an Intel N95 processor and 8GB DDR5 memory for the successor. That makes the F2-423 an older-generation purchase, but the announcement does not establish its current availability, price or comparative real-world speed. Compare actual local prices for the F2-423 and F2-424, and check the software update path for the unit being sold. A large discount may make an older enclosure attractive; a small price difference may change the value calculation.

Do not interpret a separate TerraMaster notice about the end of life of TOS 4.x as a statement that the F2-423 itself has reached end of support. That notice concerns the software version, while TerraMaster’s TOS 7 notice lists the F2-423 as an applicable model. For a used or old-stock unit, establish which TOS version it is running and follow the applicable upgrade instructions rather than inferring device support from a notice about an older operating-system branch.

Compare the full cost, not just the empty enclosure

Current retail prices, stock and regional availability are not established by the manufacturer specifications cited here, so there is no reliable universal price winner. Compare the cost of the exact AS6702T v2 revision with the F2-423 available in your market, then check the F2-424 as a newer alternative. The F2-423’s value depends on the current gap, not simply on the fact that it is an older model.

Build a realistic system total by accounting for:

  • The NAS enclosure and the two SATA drives you plan to install.
  • Any NVMe SSDs you actually intend to use, after confirming supported use and compatibility.
  • A compatible memory upgrade, if your workload requires more than the included configuration.
  • Network equipment and cabling only if your clients and network can make use of the NAS’s higher link rates.
  • A separate backup destination if the data needs a second copy.

This keeps an attractive enclosure price from obscuring the cost of the system you will actually operate. It also avoids paying for expansion or networking capabilities that cannot be used with the rest of your setup.

Which NAS should you buy?

Choose the AS6702T v2 if expansion and network capacity matter

The ASUSTOR is the stronger fit when you have a reason to use its larger M.2 expansion capacity or its 5GbE interfaces. It is also the revision to select if those capabilities are important; verify that the listing is for the Gen2+ AS6702T v2 rather than the earlier AS6702T. Its stated maximum memory is lower than the F2-423’s, so buyers prioritizing RAM capacity should weigh that difference alongside the features they will actually use.

Consider the F2-423 if its capabilities meet the job and the price is right

The F2-423 can fit a two-bay NAS setup that does not need more than its two NVMe slots or dual 2.5GbE. Its manufacturer-stated memory ceiling is higher, and its datasheet lists online capacity expansion and migration. Since the F2-424 is identified by TerraMaster as its upgrade, make the F2-423 a value choice only after checking local prices, model condition and the applicable TOS update path.

Do not choose on processor model alone

The published CPU specifications are close in headline terms: both are four-core Celeron processors rated from 2.0GHz up to 2.9GHz. The model names differ, but those specifications do not prove that one enclosure will transfer files faster or feel more responsive in a particular application. There is no neutral, controlled head-to-head performance result established here. Base the decision on the measurable configuration differences, your network and storage plan, and a price you can verify.

Pre-purchase checklist

  1. Confirm the model. On an ASUSTOR listing, look for LOCKERSTOR 2 Gen2+ and AS6702T v2. Do not treat the earlier AS6702T Gen2 as the same device.
  2. Map your network. Identify the speed supported by the NAS client, switch or direct connection, and cabling. Decide whether higher-speed links or link aggregation can serve your actual devices.
  3. Decide whether you will use M.2 SSDs. Verify the intended role, supported configuration and drive compatibility before paying for extra slots or SSDs.
  4. Check memory requirements. Compare the manufacturer-stated ceilings with your workload and verify exact module compatibility for the revision.
  5. Price a complete setup. Include SATA drives, any planned SSDs or memory, network additions that are genuinely needed, and a separate backup destination.
  6. Check software status before updating an F2-423. Record its current TOS version; use the applicable upgrade instructions, including the BIOS boot-order guidance if the system is installed on an M.2 NVMe SSD.
  7. Compare the F2-423 with the F2-424 locally. Use current prices and availability rather than assuming the older model is automatically the better bargain.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
