The Asustor Lockerstor 2 Gen2+ AS6702T v2 is a two-bay NAS built for people who can use its unusual combination of dual 5GbE networking and four NVMe slots. That flexibility can make sense for a multigigabit home lab or small office that plans to use SSD storage or cache. If you mainly need inexpensive mirrored storage from two hard drives, its premium features—and price—are harder to justify.

This review weighs the manufacturer’s specifications against results and observations published by TechRadar and Hardware Busters. Their measurements came from specific review setups, not a guarantee of the speeds or compatibility every owner will get.

What is the AS6702T v2, and what changed from the earlier model?

The LOCKERSTOR 2 Gen2+ AS6702T v2 is ASUSTOR’s two-bay NAS with two 2.5/3.5-inch SATA III bays and four M.2 NVMe slots. Its defining upgrade over the earlier AS6702T is networking: the v2 has two 5GbE ports instead of two 2.5GbE ports. The N5105 processor and 4GB starting memory carry over. Do not assume the two-bay v2 accepts an optional 10GbE card; ASUSTOR’s product information says the AS6702T and AS6702T v2 do not support 10GbE. ASUSTOR product page

ASUSTOR’s datasheet specifies an Intel Celeron N5105, rated at 2.0GHz with boost up to 2.9GHz, 4GB DDR4-2933 SO-DIMM memory expandable to 16GB, four PCIe 3.0 M.2 slots, two USB 10Gbps ports, one USB 2.0 port, HDMI output, and a 65W power adapter. RAID 0 and RAID 1 are among the listed SATA volume types. The datasheet specifies ADM 5.0 onwards; TechRadar’s review unit ran ADM 5.1.4.RM62. ASUSTOR notes that specifications may change without notice, so confirm the current configuration and software support before purchase. Manufacturer specifications · ASUSTOR datasheet

These are review-reported details; check the current manufacturer documentation for the exact software and configuration available where you buy. TechRadar review · Hardware Busters review

How fast is it in real use?

The short answer: the 5GbE ports do not by themselves guarantee 5GbE-class file transfers. The client computer, switch or direct connection, cabling, network configuration, storage media, and workload all matter. TechRadar’s published RAID 1 result came from a 2.5GbE test network, so it is useful as a real-world reference point but not a test of the NAS’s full dual-5GbE potential.

Independent results and the vendor’s lab claim

Source and setup Reported result How to interpret it
TechRadar, two WD Red Plus 2TB drives in RAID 1, 2.5GbE test network About 230MB/s read and 181MB/s write Its review-unit result under the stated drive and network conditions, not a 5GbE benchmark.
TechRadar, RAID 0 without SSD cache About 232MB/s read and 236MB/s write Review result; RAID 0 has no drive-failure redundancy.
ASUSTOR, SMB Multichannel laboratory claim over two links Up to 837MB/s read and 754MB/s write Manufacturer lab figures using optimized client computers and network settings; ASUSTOR warns ordinary setups may not reproduce them.
ASUSTOR SSD-based figures reported by TechRadar About 591MB/s each direction over one link; about 1,050MB/s with both links aggregated Optimized-lab results reported by TechRadar, not independent results from its own RAID 1 hard-drive test.

Sources: TechRadar and ASUSTOR.

TechRadar found its RAID 1 results similar with and without a read-cache SSD in that test. That is a reminder that adding cache is not a guaranteed shortcut to faster transfers: the workload and bottleneck determine whether it helps. The same reviewer cautions that two hard drives may not saturate even one 5GbE link; using SSDs or cache is more likely to make the faster networking useful. This is the reviewer’s assessment, not a universal performance rule.

What can the four NVMe slots do?

The four slots give this NAS more NVMe flexibility than its two SATA bays suggest. TechRadar describes using them for cache, storage pools, or an ADM/app volume. Its review says the M.2 slots can support RAID 5, 6 and 10, in contrast to the SATA bays’ listed Single/JBOD/RAID 0/1 options. Check the current ADM documentation and compatibility list before choosing an arrangement or buying SSDs; the reviews do not establish universal drive compatibility or a hard maximum capacity. ASUSTOR product information

There is a bandwidth trade-off: TechRadar reports that each M.2 slot is PCIe 3.0 x1, limiting a single SSD to roughly 1GB/s in its assessment. Four slots provide room to build a pool or assign storage roles, but they do not make any one drive equivalent to a wider PCIe connection.

SSD cache also adds a power-loss consideration. TechRadar recommends using a UPS in an SSD-cache configuration because a power loss could corrupt a data volume. A UPS is an additional purchase, and it does not replace a separate backup.

Is the processor and software a good fit?

The N5105 is a four-core, four-thread processor according to TechRadar, but the reviewer considers it ageing compared with newer processors in some competing NAS products. That matters most if your plans include several containers, virtual machines, or demanding media workloads. Memory can be expanded from the installed 4GB to 16GB, but extra RAM does not change the processor’s limits.

Software impressions differ by reviewer and firmware version. TechRadar assessed ADM 5.1.4.RM62, described about 150 official apps in App Central, and called the operating system competent but less deep than Synology’s in some areas. It specifically criticized Surveillance Center as simple, VirtualBox use as awkward, snapshots as applying to whole volumes rather than individual shared folders, and backup/sync apps it assessed as lacking file versioning. Hardware Busters tested ADM 5.0.0.RHN2, audited fresh-install security settings, and tried Docker, Jellyfin and Photo Gallery. Those observations apply to their respective versions and review configurations; software capabilities can change with updates. TechRadar, ADM 5.1.4.RM62 review · Hardware Busters, ADM 5.0.0.RHN2 review

What are the main drawbacks?

Only two SATA bays

Two bays cap the number of conventional hard drives you can install and leave RAID 1 as the straightforward mirrored option for drive redundancy. NVMe slots add flexibility but are not a substitute for more HDD bays if your priority is inexpensive bulk capacity or future expansion by adding drives.

Drive installation and upgrades are not tool-free

TechRadar criticizes the screw-mounted drive trays and says reaching internal upgrades requires opening the case. The metal chassis and hot-swappable bays are positives in that review, but the installation and upgrade experience is less convenient than a fully tool-free design.

5GbE requires a capable network—and suitable storage

To benefit from the ports, you need a client and network path that can negotiate and use the higher speeds; aggregation or SMB Multichannel also requires compatible configuration on the client and network. The tested 2.5GbE RAID 1 performance should not be treated as a prediction for a configured 5GbE setup.

Price and older compute platform

TechRadar’s review, published 11 October 2026, listed ASUSTOR’s suggested US price as $569.99 and a US street listing at $516.99; it also cited £504 on Amazon UK and €616.06 in Europe. These are dated retail observations, not current quotes. The reviewer argued that alternatives offered newer processors or lower prices, while the AS6702T v2’s counterpoints are four M.2 slots, dual 5GbE, build quality and a reported three-year warranty. Compare current models and local prices rather than treating that review’s snapshot as a live market survey. TechRadar review, 11 October 2026

Who should buy the AS6702T v2?

This NAS is most compelling when its networking and NVMe capacity solve a real need. Before choosing it, work through these questions:

  1. How much drive capacity do you need? Two SATA bays suit a compact two-drive setup, not a buyer whose plan depends on adding several hard drives later.
  2. Can your network use dual 5GbE? Check the client’s network interface, switch or direct-link arrangement, cabling, and support for the intended multichannel configuration.
  3. Will you use the M.2 slots? If NVMe storage, a pool, or cache is part of your plan, four slots are a central benefit. If not, they may be paid-for capability you never use.
  4. What workloads will run on it? Consider the N5105 and 4GB starting RAM (expandable to 16GB) against your container, VM, and media needs.
  5. Do ADM’s features match your workflow? Check the backup, snapshot, media, and surveillance features you actually need, and confirm their current behavior in the ADM version you will install.
  6. Can you live with the hardware access? Account for screw-fastened trays and case disassembly for upgrades.
  7. What is the full system cost? Include drives, any NVMe SSDs, possible RAM, and network equipment required to use 5GbE. If using SSD cache, consider a UPS as TechRadar recommends.

Verdict

The ASUSTOR Lockerstor 2 Gen2+ AS6702T v2 is a specialized two-bay NAS rather than an obvious value pick for basic file storage. It earns consideration from buyers who will actually use dual 5GbE and the four NVMe slots, and who accept its older Celeron platform and less convenient upgrade access. If your needs are mostly two-drive storage, or your network and storage will not take advantage of the faster connections, its standout features are unlikely to justify the premium.
