In its highest-end configuration, the screen combines 2880×1800 resolution, 30–120Hz variable refresh, 600-nit SDR brightness and up to 1,400-nit HDR peak brightness in a chassis weighing about 0.99kg. That combination makes it exceptionally easy to work on in changing light, although its price and non-upgradeable memory limit its appeal.

Windows Central’s senior editor Zac Bowden called it “the best business laptop yet,” while also warning that the price is difficult to justify for most buyers. That tension defines the product: it delivers a genuinely distinctive screen and strong business hardware, but it is not a value-focused office machine.

The Tandem OLED stacks two emissive OLED layers, allowing it to reach higher brightness than conventional laptop OLED panels while retaining OLED’s per-pixel contrast. Reviewers praised its brightness, color accuracy and contrast. The 30–120Hz range also lets the system use a lower refresh rate for static work and a higher one for scrolling or video.

What the matte coating changes
Gorilla Matte is practical for offices, trains and airports because it suppresses reflections that can make a glossy screen hard to read. The trade-off is visible softness: text edges and fine images can look slightly less crisp, and colors are not as visually punchy as on a glossy OLED. Users who work under overhead lighting or near windows may prefer the matte finish; people who prioritize maximum perceived sharpness and saturation may prefer glossy glass.
Business hardware and everyday usability
The reviewed configurations include two Thunderbolt 4 ports, two USB-A ports, HDMI 2.1, Wi-Fi 7, a fingerprint reader and Windows Hello facial recognition. That selection covers modern docks and high-speed storage while preserving familiar USB-A connectivity for peripherals. HDMI 2.1 is useful when presenting to newer external displays without carrying an adapter.

PCWorld and Windows Central reported a good keyboard, haptic touchpad and capable integrated graphics. The Core Ultra X7 358H has 16 cores and Intel Arc B390 graphics; PCWorld recorded 9,892 in PCMark 10. That is suitable for office applications, large browser workloads, conferencing, coding and light creative work, but this is still an integrated-graphics business system rather than a workstation for demanding 3D or GPU compute.

Battery life: good, not a class leader
The laptop uses a 70Wh battery. LaptopMedia measured 14 hours 19 minutes of video playback at 180 nits SDR brightness in 2026. PCWorld characterized battery life as typical rather than exceptional, and LaptopMedia noted that some Dell and Lenovo competitors last longer. Real runtime will vary substantially with brightness, refresh rate, wireless activity and workload, so the playback result should not be treated as an all-day estimate for heavy office use.

Important compromises before you buy
Price and configuration
Windows Central listed $3,599.99 for its reviewed ASUS configuration in 2026. Retail prices, memory and display choices vary by country, seller and configuration, so that figure is not a universal street price. The premium is easiest to justify if the Tandem OLED’s brightness and glare control directly solve your working conditions.
Soldered memory
LaptopMedia’s reviewed configuration uses soldered, non-upgradeable RAM. Choose the memory capacity you will need for the laptop’s entire service life; there is no later upgrade path for heavier multitasking or virtual machines.

Check the hinge on arrival
Windows Central found a loose hinge on a pre-production review unit and said later retail units did not show the problem. A purchased machine should hold its display angle securely. If it does not, exchange it rather than accepting hinge movement as normal.
How it compares with other premium business laptops
The relevant alternatives include Lenovo ThinkPad, Dell Pro and HP EliteBook models in the same premium class. The decision should be based on more than processor benchmarks:
Best Value
- Spacious Design: Measuring 21.1" wide and 12" deep, our lap desk comfortably fits most laptops up to 15.6". Extra room for accessories ensures convenience.
- Enhanced Functionality: Packed with handy features, including a 5x9" precision tracking mouse pad and a built-in phone slot for seamless work or video calls. Plus, enjoy laptop support with the integrated device ledge.
- Cool Comfort: Enjoy a stable surface with our lap desk's dual bolster cushion, designed for comfort and airflow, keeping your lap cool during extended use.
- Durable Surface: Work with confidence on our lap desk's solid surface, featuring a blush pink color, ensuring optimal air circulation to prevent your laptop from overheating.
- On-the-Go Convenience: With an integrated handle and lightweight design (2.14 lbs), our lap desk is portable for travel or moving around the house, offering flexibility in any space.
- Display: compare matte versus glossy finishes, measured brightness and whether HDR matters to your work.
- Portability: the ExpertBook Ultra’s approximately 0.99kg weight is a major advantage for frequent travel.
- Input devices: assess keyboard feel, pointing-device accuracy and comfort during long sessions.
- Performance: compare the exact processor, integrated or discrete graphics and workload-specific tests.
- Endurance: use equivalent brightness and test methods; the ExpertBook’s 14-hour-19-minute video result is not directly comparable with every vendor claim.
- Manageability and security: check biometric options, enterprise management support and fleet-imaging requirements.
- Service: investigate warranty terms, repairability and memory or storage upgrade options before committing.
- Total cost: include the exact display, memory, storage and regional warranty rather than comparing base-model prices.
Who should choose the ExpertBook Ultra?
It is a strong fit for executives, consultants and mobile professionals who spend long hours reading and writing in reflective environments and will pay for a very light chassis. The matte Tandem OLED is also compelling for presentation-heavy work where glare control and HDR brightness matter.
It is harder to recommend to buyers seeking maximum value, user-upgradable memory, class-leading battery endurance or a conventional glossy OLED look. For those users, a less expensive configuration or a competing business laptop may be the more sensible choice.
The Bottom Line
The ASUS ExpertBook Ultra B9406 stands out because its 600-nit SDR, 1,400-nit HDR Tandem OLED makes a genuinely useful improvement to mobile work, not merely a specification-sheet upgrade. Its 0.99kg chassis, capable ports and strong performance reinforce that advantage. The $3,599.99 reviewed configuration, soldered memory and merely good battery endurance mean it is a specialist premium purchase rather than the default business-laptop recommendation.
