It is worth buying only if you need to read or write CDs and DVDs on a computer with no optical drive and you do not need Blu-ray. The price is the one TechRadar reported that day. Retail prices move quickly, so confirm the current figure on the Amazon listing before you order.
What the discount actually saves
- Reported sale price: $37.88 at Amazon, per TechRadar Pro, October 8, 2026.
- Prior price: $44.99.
- Difference: $7.11, or about 15.8% of the prior price, which the headline rounds to 16%.
- Scope: The figure is a single reported snapshot. It is not a price guarantee, and it does not show how long the offer will last.
A $7 saving is modest. The more useful question is whether a drive at this price solves your problem at all, and that depends on which ZenDrive model you are actually buying.

Which ZenDrive you would get
“ZenDrive” is ASUS’s product line name, not a single model. ASUS’s product catalog lists five drives: U3M (SDRW-08U3M-U), V1M (SDRW-08V1M-U), SDRW-08D2S-U, U7M (SDRW-08U7M-U) and U9M (SDRW-08U9M-U). The TechRadar deal copy does not name the model, and its description of USB-A and USB-C support resembles ASUS’s U9M listing. Treat the U9M as a likely match, not a confirmed one, until the Amazon product page shows the model number.
The two models with published specifications compare as follows:

- USB 3.2 Gen2x1 Type-C to C Cable: Provides a reliable connection for seamless data transfers.
- Iconic design: Robust construction with Zen-inspired concentric-circle finish
- M-DISC support: Save your precious photos, videos and data for up to 1,000 years
- Drag and burn: Create a disc in just three steps, via intuitive interface (Windows OS)
- Disc encryption: Hassle-free data protection through password control and hidden-folder functions (Windows OS)
When this drive makes sense
- Reading an old disc: Accessing photos, documents or archives stored on a CD or DVD.
- Installing disc-based software: Running a setup program or driver that ships only on disc.
- Making physical backups: Burning a disc copy of files you want to keep on optical media.
- Writing M-DISC media: Creating discs on media designed for long-term storage, within the write limits listed above.
When it does not
- Blu-ray playback or burning: ZenDrives are CD and DVD drives. TechRadar’s deal copy says to skip the product if Blu-ray is required.
- Routine file transfers: TechRadar notes that a flash drive or external SSD is generally more practical for moving files around. An optical drive is slower, and discs hold far less data than either.
- Machines that need a specific OS: The U3M’s listed support covers Mac OS X 10.6 and later and Windows 8 through 11. Do not assume the same range for every model.
Checklist before you order
- Open the Amazon listing and confirm the model number. It should read SDRW-08U9M-U, SDRW-08U3M-U or another catalog number.
- Check the connector. Confirm that your laptop or desktop has a USB Type-A port, or that you have a Type-C port, and that the cable in the box fits it.
- Confirm the operating system. Match your OS against the supported list on the ASUS specification page for that exact model.
- Confirm the disc formats you need. If the job calls for Blu-ray, stop here.
- Compare the live price and stock status against the $37.88 figure before you buy.
M-DISC media
M-DISC is a long-life disc format that ASUS lists as supported by several ZenDrive models. The drive does not come with blank discs, so budget for them separately. For the U3M and U9M, the listed M-DISC write speed is up to 4x for single-layer DVD+R. Verify that any blank disc you buy is compatible with the exact drive model, because compatibility depends on both the drive and the media format.

Verdict
At $37.88, the ZenDrive is a reasonable low-cost choice for occasional disc work on a laptop without an optical drive, provided you do not need Blu-ray. If your real task is moving files, a flash drive or external SSD will serve you better. Confirm the model on the listing first, because the reported deal does not name it.
