The better purchase is the exact configuration that fits your workload, budget, carrying habits and local warranty. ASUS’s US student listings include several Vivobook sizes and configurations, while Lenovo’s IdeaPad Slim 5 family offers clearly specified AMD options, memory expansion and storage choices. Those family-level descriptions are useful starting points, not proof that every model from one brand beats every model from the other.
Use the model number, processor, RAM, SSD, screen, weight, ports, price and warranty on the listing you can actually buy. The checklist and comparisons below show how to make that decision without relying on a blanket brand reputation.

The short answer: choose a configuration, not a logo
Both companies sell laptops aimed at students and routine personal work: writing papers, browsing, video calls, streaming, office applications and light creative tasks. Official product pages also show substantial variation inside each family. Screen size, processor generation, memory type and capacity, storage, ports, battery and warranty can change with the SKU and country.

What the current student-oriented lineups show
ASUS Vivobook examples
ASUS’s US student listing presents Vivobook as an everyday-use range in 15-, 16- and 17-inch formats. One Vivobook 16 F1605 listing describes options up to a 13th-generation Intel Core i9 processor, up to 16 GB of DDR4 memory, up to a 1 TB SSD and a 180-degree hinge. Another Vivobook 15 F1502 listing shows a different processor and storage ceiling. These are examples from a family page, not specifications guaranteed for every Vivobook, retailer or country.
The practical implication is to open the exact product page and record its model code. A 15-inch Vivobook with one processor and display can be a very different student computer from a 16- or 17-inch version carrying the same family name.
Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 (16-inch AMD) examples
Lenovo describes the IdeaPad Slim 5 (16-inch AMD) as a laptop for everyday activities. Its US family listing includes AMD Ryzen AI 5 340 and Ryzen AI 7 350 processor choices, 16 GB of DDR5 memory with support for up to 32 GB through two DIMM slots, up to a 1 TB M.2 SSD and support for a second SSD. The family information also lists a 60 Wh battery, Wi-Fi 7 in supported regions and configurations, and a 16-inch WUXGA IPS touch display. Starting weight is listed as 1.85 kg.
Recommended Free Tools
One specific US part-number listing, 83HY001PUS, is narrower: Ryzen AI 5 340, integrated Radeon 840M graphics, 16 GB DDR5, a 512 GB SSD, a 16-inch WUXGA IPS touch display, Wi-Fi 7 and a one-year courier or carry-in warranty. Do not treat that configuration as the specification of every IdeaPad Slim 5.
Why family specifications can mislead
Manufacturers commonly publish a range of possible components under one family heading. ASUS’s own comparison page, for example, places a Zenbook S 13 OLED and a Vivobook S 14 side by side and shows differences in display size and resolution, refresh rate, processor, memory options, battery capacity and ports. That comparison is evidence of configuration variety, not a direct ASUS-versus-Lenovo test and not a guarantee of current inventory.
Lenovo likewise separates family-level capabilities from exact part numbers. “Up to” memory or storage describes an available option, not what arrives in the box. Before paying, save a copy of the retailer or manufacturer specification page and verify the complete SKU.

Head-to-head checklist for a student purchase
| Decision area | What to compare on the exact ASUS and Lenovo listings | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Current price in your country, including tax, delivery and any student offer | A family’s advertised maximum specification may cost much more than the base configuration. |
| Processor | Exact model and generation, not just “Core” or “Ryzen” branding | Determines responsiveness, multitasking headroom and efficiency for your applications. |
| Memory | Installed capacity, DDR generation, number of slots and whether an upgrade is supported | More memory helps with many browser tabs and creative applications; soldered memory cannot be replaced. |
| Storage | SSD capacity, drive type and whether a second slot is present | Course files, photos and games consume space quickly; a second slot can delay an expensive replacement. |
| Display | Diagonal size, resolution, panel type, touch support, brightness, refresh rate and finish | A larger screen aids split-screen study, while a smaller one usually fits a tighter desk or bag. |
| Portability | Listed laptop weight plus the charger’s size and weight | The computer is only part of what you carry between home, class and library. |
| Ports | USB-A, USB-C features, display output, audio, card reader and charging method | Check compatibility with your existing monitor, projector, drives and headphones. |
| Wireless and camera | Wi-Fi generation, Bluetooth, webcam resolution and privacy shutter | Online classes and campus networks can expose missing features only after purchase. |
| Battery | Capacity and the manufacturer’s stated test method | Advertised runtime is not directly comparable when test conditions differ. |
| Support | Warranty length, service type, country coverage and return window | A lower price can be offset by difficult service or an unsuitable return policy. |
Match the laptop to how you study
If you commute every day
Start with the complete carry weight rather than screen size alone. The 16-inch IdeaPad Slim 5 family starts at 1.85 kg, but the final configuration and charger still matter. ASUS’s student page contains several screen sizes, so its exact Vivobook weight must be checked on the individual listing. There is no like-for-like portability winner in these examples. If your priority is a lighter bag, compare two specific models with their chargers attached to the calculation.
If you want a desktop-like study area
A 16- or 17-inch screen gives more physical space for a document and lecture notes side by side, but it occupies more desk and bag space. Confirm the actual resolution and panel specification; diagonal size alone does not tell you how much information fits on screen. The Lenovo family’s 16-inch option is a WUXGA IPS touch display, while ASUS Vivobook listings span multiple sizes and configurations.
If you run demanding software
Identify the application’s CPU, memory and graphics requirements before comparing brands. Lenovo’s listed Ryzen AI 5 340 and Ryzen AI 7 350 choices are not interchangeable, and ASUS’s Vivobook 16 listing reaches up to a 13th-generation Intel Core i9 only in higher configurations. Integrated graphics, such as the Radeon 840M listed on the 83HY001PUS, are designed differently from a laptop with a discrete graphics processor. Do not pay for a high-end processor if the rest of the configuration, especially memory or cooling, does not meet the software requirement.
If you keep laptops for several years
Prioritize accessible upgrades and storage. Lenovo’s IdeaPad Slim 5 family specifies two DIMM slots and support for up to 32 GB of DDR5, plus support for a second SSD. Check whether the exact part number retains those slots. ASUS Vivobook specifications differ by model, so do not assume that one Vivobook’s upgrade path applies to another. If a listing does not state upgradeability, ask the seller or consult the service documentation before purchase.
If your priority is the lowest upfront price
Compare complete configurations, not headline “starting at” prices or maximum specifications. Record processor, RAM, SSD, screen and warranty in a small table, then compare the total checkout cost in your currency. A cheaper machine with half the storage or a shorter warranty may not be the lower-cost choice over your course of study.

Processor names
Write down the full model string. “Ryzen AI 5” and “Ryzen AI 7” identify tiers, but the model number and generation determine the actual platform. The same principle applies to Intel Core branding. Compare chips within the same performance class and generation; do not infer performance from the brand name alone.

Memory capacity and type
Sixteen gigabytes is a common starting point in the cited families, but memory technology and upgrade design differ. Lenovo’s family listing specifies DDR5 and two DIMM slots, with support up to 32 GB. The ASUS Vivobook 16 example specifies up to 16 GB DDR4. Those figures cannot be compared as if they were identical configurations, and “up to” does not tell you the installed amount on a particular SKU.
SSD capacity and expansion
Lenovo lists up to a 1 TB M.2 SSD and support for a second SSD in the IdeaPad Slim 5 family; the 83HY001PUS configuration contains 512 GB. ASUS’s Vivobook 16 example lists up to 1 TB, while another Vivobook listing has a different storage ceiling. Check whether the drive is replaceable, whether a second bay is populated or merely supported, and whether opening the chassis affects local warranty terms.
Display, ports and wireless features
For reading and writing, check resolution, brightness and surface finish in addition to size. A 16-inch panel can still be unsuitable in a bright room if brightness is low or glare is high. Touch support is listed for the cited Lenovo 16-inch WUXGA IPS configuration; do not assume touch on every IdeaPad Slim 5 or Vivobook.

Make a port inventory based on your accessories. Count the number of USB-A and USB-C ports and verify whether USB-C supports charging, display output or only data. Check for HDMI, a headphone jack and a card reader if your coursework needs them. The ASUS comparison page demonstrates that ports can change between models, so a port on one ASUS laptop is not evidence that another has it.
Wi-Fi 7 appears in the Lenovo family and the 83HY001PUS listing, subject to region and configuration. Your campus network also needs compatible equipment to deliver the benefit. Wireless generation should therefore be a tie-breaker only after confirming the exact SKU and local network support.
Battery claims and real-world use
Battery capacity, processor, display, software and power settings all affect unplugged time. Manufacturer runtime figures are test claims and cannot be equated across ASUS and Lenovo unless the test method and conditions match. No matched ASUS-versus-Lenovo battery test is established here.

Use capacity and charging details as planning information, not a promise of lecture-day runtime. If you need long sessions, compare independent reviews of the exact model after confirming that the reviewed processor, screen and battery match the listing you intend to buy. Carry the charger in your weight calculation, and check whether USB-C charging is supported if you already own a compatible adapter.

Warranty, service and geography
Warranty terms are local and date-specific. ASUS Germany states that eligible ASUS and ROG laptops purchased from October 1, 2025 receive a three-year manufacturer’s warranty. A separate ASUS Latin America offer states two years for eligible new consumer laptops purchased from August 1, 2026 in Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Bolivia and Nicaragua, subject to its terms. These offers cannot be generalized to other countries or every model.
The cited US Lenovo 83HY001PUS listing provides one year of courier or carry-in warranty. Lenovo’s warranty options can vary by configuration; an older ThinkPad PSREF document is not evidence of the current IdeaPad terms. Read the support page for your country, record the start date and confirm whether accidental damage, battery coverage and international service are included.
A reliable buying process
- Define your workload. List the applications you use, the number of browser tabs you keep open, whether you edit media, and whether you need gaming or specialist software.
- Set physical priorities. Decide whether low carry weight, a larger display, touch input or a compact footprint matters most.
- Choose a minimum specification. Set a processor class, installed RAM, SSD capacity, display resolution and required ports before looking at discounts.
- Shortlist exact SKUs. Record each full model or part number. Do not compare an ASUS family maximum with a Lenovo base configuration.
- Verify upgrade paths. Look for explicit slot and storage information. For the IdeaPad Slim 5, confirm that the two DIMM slots and second-SSD support apply to your chosen part number.
- Check the complete cost. Include tax, shipping, charger requirements and any accessories you genuinely need. Prices and stock change, so recheck immediately before ordering.
- Read local support terms. Confirm warranty duration, service method, return window and country restrictions in writing.
- Inspect on arrival. Match the box label to the ordered SKU, verify RAM, SSD, display and ports, and test Wi-Fi, webcam, charging and sleep behavior during the return period.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Choosing by brand reputation: Reliability and satisfaction are not established as brand-wide winners here. Use the exact model and documented support terms.
- Assuming “up to” is included: Maximum RAM or storage may describe an optional configuration. Confirm what is installed.
- Comparing unlike screens: A 17-inch display, a 16-inch WUXGA panel and a smaller high-resolution panel serve different needs. Compare resolution, brightness and finish as well as diagonal size.
- Ignoring the charger: A listed laptop weight excludes what you carry with it. Include the adapter and cable.
- Using a warranty from the wrong country: ASUS’s Germany and Latin America terms illustrate why geography and purchase date matter. Read the local policy for your SKU.
- Treating battery claims as lab-equivalent: Different test scripts make direct runtime rankings unreliable without matched conditions.
- Buying on a family name alone: Vivobook and IdeaPad Slim 5 each contain multiple processors, displays and storage options. Save the exact specification page before checkout.
Bottom-line decision framework
Choose an ASUS Vivobook when a specific listing gives you the screen size, processor, memory, storage, ports and local support you need at a better total price than the Lenovo configuration you are considering. Choose a Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5 when its documented AMD options, DDR5 memory expansion, second-SSD support, 16-inch touch display or available regional features align with your priorities and the exact configuration fits your budget.
Neither choice is automatically better for every student. The defensible decision is the one made from two complete, country-specific SKUs, with portability, upgradeability, battery expectations, warranty and return rights checked before payment.
