Which SSD slots and connections does this board have?
ASUS lists four M.2 Key M sockets and four SATA 6 Gb/s ports for the exact TUF GAMING Z690-PLUS WIFI D4 model. This is the WiFi D4 board; do not assume the same details apply to similarly named DDR5 or non-WiFi models. See the ASUS specifications and user manual.

ASUS lists PCIe 4.0 x4 support for each M.2 slot. It lists SATA mode only for M.2_2, so a SATA M.2 drive should be placed there; do not treat the other sockets as SATA-compatible. A 22110-length drive is listed only for M.2_1 and M.2_3.

How to choose a compatible M.2 SSD
- Check the interface. A PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 NVMe drive is the documented fit for all four slots. A SATA M.2 drive is documented for M.2_2 only.
- Check the length. The number after “M.2” identifies the drive’s dimensions: for example, 2280 means 22 mm wide and 80 mm long. Confirm that the length appears in the chosen slot’s supported list.
- Use the board manual for installation details. ASUS states in its manual that “The M.2 SSD module is purchased separately.” The specification lists an M.2 screw package and an M.2 heatsink feature; consult the manual for the slot-specific installation procedure and hardware.
The specifications identify an M.2 heatsink feature, but they do not establish comparative temperatures or show that an aftermarket heatsink is necessary. No thermal-performance conclusion follows from the feature listing alone.

What about SATA drives and RAID?
In addition to the M.2 sockets, the board provides four SATA 6 Gb/s ports for compatible SATA storage. ASUS lists Intel Rapid Storage Technology support for NVMe RAID 0, 1, and 5, and SATA RAID 0, 1, 5, and 10. That is the manufacturer’s supported-feature list, not a guarantee that every combination of drives, BIOS settings, operating systems, or boot configurations will work; check the manual and relevant software requirements for a planned RAID setup.
Can I use a multi-drive M.2 expansion card?
ASUS includes this board in its PCIe bifurcation compatibility information for PCIe M.2 expansion cards. The listing alone does not establish a specific card configuration for this board. Before buying or installing a multi-drive add-in card, verify the card’s requirements and the board’s exact manual and BIOS instructions.
