The ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQM5A is selling for $199 at Amazon, down from $259, according to PCWorld’s October 15, 2026 deal report. That $60 reduction (often described as $70 off when rounded against the regular price) puts this 27-inch 1440p/300Hz display within a few dollars of its reported all-time low. Price and inventory can change quickly, so confirm the live listing before ordering.

What you get for $199

The VG27AQM5A combines a 27-inch Fast IPS panel, 2560×1440 resolution and a 300Hz maximum refresh rate. It is Nvidia G-Sync compatible and includes Extreme Low Motion Blur Sync (ELMB Sync), a manufacturer-rated 0.3ms response-time claim, 95% DCI-P3 coverage, Shadow Boost, DisplayWidget Center, a built-in speaker and a three-year warranty.

Size and resolution 27 inches, 2560×1440
Refresh rate Up to 300Hz

At 300Hz, each refresh lasts about 3.33 milliseconds, compared with 5.56 milliseconds at 180Hz. That difference is relevant in fast competitive play, where a new frame can be displayed sooner if your graphics card is actually rendering at those rates.

Is 1440p a meaningful upgrade from a fuzzy 1080p screen?

Yes, provided your graphics card can maintain the required frame rate. A 2560×1440 frame contains 3,686,400 pixels—78% more than a 1920×1080 frame—so text, distant targets and interface details look sharper. The higher workload is the trade-off: the same game settings that run at very high frame rates in 1080p may fall well below 300fps at 1440p.

Who can take advantage of 300Hz?

The practical question is whether your PC can feed 300Hz at 1440p in the games you actually play. High-end systems can approach or exceed 300fps in esports titles such as Counter-Strike 2, Valorant, Rocket League and Overwatch, especially with competitive settings. Modern single-player games at high or ultra settings generally will not sustain 300fps at QHD.

Adaptive sync allows the display to vary its refresh rate when frame rates are below 300fps, so the monitor remains usable at 120–180fps. However, if your system normally stays in that range, you will not receive the full advantage over a less expensive 180Hz monitor.

Important compromises before you buy

Contrast, HDR and dark-room performance

Fast IPS technology delivers consistent viewing angles and quick pixel transitions, but it typically has lower contrast than VA panels. IPS glow can be visible in dark scenes, and this model’s 300-nit brightness is modest for HDR-style effects. Wide-gamut coverage can also make ordinary sRGB content look oversaturated unless an sRGB mode is available and enabled.

Stand and mounting

The supplied stand supports tilt and swivel but lacks height adjustment. A VESA 100×100 monitor arm is the straightforward fix if you need the screen higher, closer or easier to rotate.

  • Enhanced Dark Scene Visibility: Shadow Boost enhances image details in dark areas, brightening scenes without over-exposing bright areas

Audio and responsiveness

PCWorld describes the built-in 2W speakers as tinny. Wake-from-sleep behavior is reported as slow, and the review characterizes color depth as unimpressive. These issues do not affect the core high-refresh gaming function, but they matter if the monitor will also serve as your main work display or audio source.

How it compares with the sensible alternatives

Model Resolution and refresh Best fit What you give up or gain
ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQM5A 2560×1440, 300Hz High-end esports PC that can sustain very high QHD frame rates Sharper image and higher ceiling; $199 sale price, weaker stand ergonomics and modest brightness
ASUS TUF VG27AQ3A 2560×1440, 180Hz Systems that usually run between 120 and 180fps Lower cost and a refresh ceiling more aligned with mainstream hardware
ASUS TUF VG259QMR5A 1920×1080, 310Hz Players who prioritize maximum refresh over resolution Similar top-end refresh, but substantially less desktop and image sharpness than 1440p

Buying checklist

  • Check recent in-game frame rates at 2560×1440, not just your graphics card’s model name.
  • Choose the 300Hz model when competitive games regularly approach its ceiling; otherwise compare the value of a 180Hz QHD display.
  • Confirm that your chosen connection and cable support 1440p at the desired refresh rate.
  • Budget for a VESA 100×100 arm if height adjustment is important.
  • Expect IPS-style contrast and glow rather than deep blacks, and do not treat the 300-nit rating as a premium HDR specification.
  • Verify the $199 price, seller, shipping and return terms at checkout because the promotion and stock are volatile.

Bottom line

At $199, the VG27AQM5A is compelling for competitive players who want to move from 1080p to sharper QHD without giving up a 300Hz ceiling. Its value drops if your games run near 180fps, or if you require strong HDR, deep contrast, a height-adjustable stand or quality built-in audio. Match the monitor to your measured frame rates, then decide whether the near-record sale price justifies those compromises.
