Yes—the ASUS RT-BE86U is a dual-band Wi‑Fi 7 (802.11be) router with one 10G WAN/LAN port and four 2.5G Ethernet ports. Its advertised wireless rates are up to 5,764 Mbps on 5 GHz and 1,032 Mbps on 2.4 GHz (6,800 Mbps combined). Those are manufacturer link-rate figures, not a promise that your internet plan or a single device will reach them.

What the RT-BE86U includes

ASUS positions the RT-BE86U as a high-speed wired and wireless home or small-office router. The official product page and Australian technical specification list the following core hardware:

Item Specification What it means
Wi‑Fi standard Wi‑Fi 7 / 802.11be Newer client devices can use Wi‑Fi 7 features; older Wi‑Fi clients still connect using their supported standards.
5 GHz radio Up to 5,764 Mbps; 4×4 ASUS’s maximum link-rate figure under suitable conditions, not measured internet throughput.
2.4 GHz radio Up to 1,032 Mbps; 3×3 Useful for range and smart-home devices, but normally slower and more congested than 5 GHz.
10G Ethernet 1 × 10G WAN/LAN Can serve as the internet uplink or as a 10-gigabit LAN connection, depending on your configuration.
2.5G Ethernet 1 × 2.5G WAN/LAN plus 3 × 2.5G LAN Four 2.5G-capable ports in total.
USB 1 × USB 3.2 Gen 1 and 1 × USB 2.0 For the router’s supported storage, printer or tethering functions.

ASUS describes the aggregate wired capability as “20G.” That is marketing for the combined capacity of the ports; it does not mean one device or one broadband subscription receives 20 Gbps.

Does it really have a 10-gigabit port?

Yes. There is one physical 10G WAN/LAN port. ASUS says, “The RT-BE86U includes one 10G WAN/LAN port, ready for next-gen entertainment or home studios.” Because it is shared WAN/LAN, you choose its role during setup:

#1 Best Overall
ASUS RT-BE86U WiFi 7 Gaming Router, 10G WAN, 6.8 Gbps, Mesh VPN Compatible
  • Beyond-fast WiFi 7 (802.11be) router enables WiFi 7 performance (Multi-link Operation (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) and 4096-QAM), boosting dual band throughput up to 6800 Mbps
  • Ultrahigh-speed 10 Gigabit Ethernet with one standard 10G WAN/LAN port empowers supreme wired network capacity up to 20G
  • Always-on internet with Versatile WAN options, hassle-free AI WAN detection on 2.5G or 10G WAN/LAN ports and convenient 4G LTE & 5G Mobile Tethering via USB
  • A powerhouse quad-core 2.6 GHz 64-bit CPU unleashes full performance for demanding WiFi 7 and 10 Gigabit network applications
  • Guest Network Pro offers effortless network segmentation with up to five SSIDs for easy IoT device setup and management, instant VPN connections and convenient parental controls
  • 10G WAN: connect a compatible fiber ONT, cable modem or other upstream device when your service or local gateway can deliver more than 2.5 Gbps.
  • 10G LAN: connect a workstation, NAS, switch or other 10G device while internet service enters through the 2.5G WAN/LAN port.

You also need an upstream device and Ethernet path that negotiate at 10 Gbps, plus a client or switch with a 10G interface. A 10G router port alone cannot increase a slower internet plan or make a 1G device run at 10G. The supplied documentation identifies the ports but does not prescribe a particular cable category, so select cabling appropriate to the actual link speed and run.

How many 2.5G ports are there?

Four: one configurable 2.5G WAN/LAN port and three dedicated 2.5G LAN ports. If the 10G socket is used for WAN, the 2.5G WAN/LAN socket can be used for another LAN device. If the 10G socket is used as LAN, the 2.5G WAN/LAN socket can provide the internet connection.

What Wi‑Fi 7 features are supported?

The RT-BE86U is a dual-band Wi‑Fi 7 router, using 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radios rather than adding a 6 GHz band. ASUS lists 160 MHz channel bandwidth, 4K-QAM (4096-QAM), OFDMA and dual-band Multi-Link Operation (MLO). These features can improve capacity or responsiveness when the client, channel conditions and regional settings support them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • 160 MHz channels: wider channels can provide higher link rates, but clean spectrum and compatible clients are required.
  • 4K-QAM: denser modulation can raise the negotiated rate at strong signal levels; it is not available to every client or at every distance.
  • Dual-band MLO: compatible Wi‑Fi 7 devices may use links across the supported bands for improved efficiency or resilience.

The 5,764 Mbps and 1,032 Mbps figures are ASUS maximum wireless data rates. Actual transfer speed depends on client hardware, channel width, signal strength, interference, protocol overhead and the capabilities of the other end of the connection. No independent throughput or range test was established for this model here.

AiMesh and coverage options

ASUS lists the RT-BE86U for use as a primary router or an AiMesh node, and its operating modes also include access point, repeater and media bridge. An AiMesh setup combines compatible ASUS routers under one network name. ASUS describes the goal as wider coverage and a more stable network, but that is a manufacturer claim rather than an independent validation.

Use it alone

A standalone RT-BE86U is the simpler choice when one router can cover your floor plan and you can place it near the center of the area that needs service. ASUS advertises coverage up to 2,750 square feet; walls, building materials, neighboring networks and router placement can produce a different result in your home.

Add an AiMesh node

Add a second compatible ASUS router when you have dead zones, multiple floors or an outbuilding that a single unit cannot reach. Check the exact model’s current AiMesh compatibility before buying. For the fastest inter-router link, use Ethernet backhaul where practical; the RT-BE86U supports Ethernet backhaul, but the available speed still depends on the connected ports and cabling.

USB tethering for 4G/5G mobile connectivity is documented as a feature. Compatibility with a specific phone, modem, carrier or service plan is not established by the available materials, so confirm supported hardware before relying on cellular backup.

Choosing the right connection layout

Your equipment or service Practical arrangement Limitation to expect
Internet service above 2.5 Gbps with a 10G handoff Use the 10G WAN/LAN port as WAN. Your modem/ONT, subscription and provider equipment must all support the delivered rate.
Up to 2.5 Gbps internet and one 10G local device Use 2.5G WAN/LAN for WAN and the 10G port for the workstation or NAS. Internet access remains limited by the 2.5G uplink and plan.
Several multi-gig wired devices Use the three 2.5G LAN ports and the remaining configurable port; add a compatible multi-gig switch if more sockets are needed. The switch and every link must negotiate at the intended speed.
Mostly wireless devices Use 5 GHz for high-throughput clients and 2.4 GHz for range-oriented or smart-home clients. Client Wi‑Fi generation and radio conditions determine the negotiated rate.

Who should buy the RT-BE86U?

It fits if you need

  • A Wi‑Fi 7 upgrade without moving to a tri-band design.
  • A 10G port that can be assigned to either WAN or LAN.
  • Four 2.5G Ethernet connections for multi-gig wired equipment.
  • ASUS AiMesh expansion for a larger home or small office.
  • Built-in segmentation and VPN-oriented features documented by ASUS.

Consider another approach if

  • You require 6 GHz Wi‑Fi; this model is dual-band only.
  • Your clients and internet service are limited to 1 Gbps and you do not need multi-gig LAN, where the extra ports may add little value.
  • You need independently verified range or throughput figures before purchase; the available sources provide specifications and manufacturer claims, not third-party testing.

Bottom line

The RT-BE86U’s defining proposition is straightforward: dual-band Wi‑Fi 7 paired with one flexible 10G port and four 2.5G ports. It is most compelling when you have multi-gig internet, 10G local storage or workstations, or a plan to build an ASUS AiMesh network. Treat the 6,800 Mbps wireless total, 2,750-square-foot coverage statement and “20G” wired description as ASUS-rated or aggregate figures—not as guaranteed speed for a single device or a particular home.
