Short answer: The ROG Xbox Ally X20 is the better fit if you want the fastest results in most CPU/GPU tests, a compact Xbox-style grip, a very bright OLED panel and simpler handheld controls. The Lenovo Legion Go 2 is the more versatile machine: its 8.8-inch 144Hz OLED is larger and sharper, its SSD is substantially faster in testing, and its detachable controllers, kickstand, Hall-effect sticks and FPS mouse mode support more play styles.

This comparison uses the current ROG Xbox Ally X20 specifications from Microsoft and the Lenovo Legion Go 2 results reported by Windows Central on October 16, 2025. It does not treat benchmark differences as guarantees for every game, driver or power setting.

Which handheld is faster?

In Windows Central’s October 16, 2025 hands-on comparison, the ROG Xbox Ally X was slightly ahead of the Legion Go 2 in most CPU and GPU tests. Both systems use an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme variant with 8 cores, 16 threads, 16 graphics compute units and a configurable 15–35W TDP. That means the two handhelds have broadly similar silicon, while cooling profiles, memory configuration, drivers and the selected power mode determine the result in a particular game.

The Legion Go 2’s clear performance advantage in that testing was storage speed. Its SSD delivered substantially faster read and write results than the Xbox Ally X review unit. Faster storage does not raise frame rates directly, but it can shorten game launches, level loads, shader-cache work and large-file saves. If you regularly install or move very large games, that difference is more visible than a small CPU benchmark lead.

Specification or result ROG Xbox Ally X20 Lenovo Legion Go 2 What it means
Processor AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme variant Same 8-core/16-thread class; implementation and power limits still matter.
Graphics compute units 16 16 Comparable integrated-GPU resources on paper.
Configurable TDP 15–35W 15–35W Higher modes can improve performance while consuming more battery.
Memory 24GB LPDDR5X-8000 Configurations up to 32GB More Legion memory helps when games, browsers and launchers remain open together.
Internal storage 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 2280 SSD Configurations up to 2TB Legion offers more capacity and was faster in Windows Central’s SSD tests.

Use those results as a directional guide rather than a promise. A game running at 15W can behave very differently from the same title at 25W or 35W, and a later BIOS, graphics driver or game patch can change the ranking. The practical conclusion is narrow: choose the X20 for a small, repeatable CPU/GPU edge in the cited testing; choose the Legion Go 2 if loading and file-transfer speed matter more.

Display: Legion Go 2 is larger and sharper, while X20 is brighter

For image quality and viewing area, the Legion Go 2 wins on size, resolution and refresh rate. It uses an 8.8-inch OLED panel at 1920×1200, 144Hz and variable refresh rate (VRR). The X20’s current Microsoft listing specifies a 7.4-inch OLED at 1920×1080, 120Hz, HDR and VRR. Windows Central’s earlier Xbox Ally X comparison describes a 7-inch panel, so do not apply that older figure to every X20 listing; the newer X20 product page states 7.4 inches.

Display feature ROG Xbox Ally X20 Lenovo Legion Go 2 Advantage
Panel type OLED OLED Both provide OLED contrast and true blacks.
Size 7.4 inches 8.8 inches Legion gives games and desktop apps more physical space.
Resolution 1920×1080 1920×1200 Legion is taller and sharper for text and strategy interfaces.
Maximum refresh rate 120Hz 144Hz Legion has more headroom in games that can exceed 120fps.
VRR Yes Yes Both can smooth frame-rate fluctuations within their supported range.
HDR Listed by Microsoft Not stated in the cited comparison Do not assume equivalent HDR certification without checking the specific configuration.
Peak brightness 1,400 nits reported for the newer X20 by PC Gamer in 2026 Not stated in the cited sources X20 has the documented brightness advantage for bright rooms or outdoor shade.

Windows Central judged the Legion display better overall because the larger OLED, 1920×1200 resolution and 144Hz refresh make games and Windows easier to see. That judgment is about the complete viewing experience, not brightness alone. PC Gamer’s 2026 report of 1,400-nit peak brightness gives the X20 an important advantage when reflections and ambient light are the problem. Peak figures are not the same as sustained full-screen brightness, so treat the number as a highlight capability rather than a guarantee that the entire panel remains at 1,400 nits.

At handheld distance, 1920×1080 is a sensible target for demanding games because it reduces the rendering load. The Legion’s extra 120 vertical pixels are more noticeable in desktop work, menus and games with a wide user interface. VRR on both units is useful when a title cannot hold a fixed 60, 90 or 120 frames per second; it does not remove the need to select a sensible resolution and power mode.

Controls and ergonomics

Why the X20 feels more like a console

The X20 uses pronounced Xbox-inspired grips, and Windows Central found it more comfortable to hold. Its layout is immediately familiar to anyone used to an Xbox controller, with a transforming D-pad, impulse triggers, TMR joysticks and rubberized grips. Microsoft describes the D-pad as rotating between four-way and eight-way input, allowing a traditional cross direction for menus and a more complete eight-direction surface when a game needs diagonals. The impulse triggers can provide independent haptic vibration for each trigger.

Those features favor players who hold the device for long sessions and want a conventional controller response without configuring detachable parts. The deeper grips also give larger hands more surface to rest against, although comfort remains personal and depends on hand size.

Why the Legion Go 2 is more adaptable

The Legion Go 2 adds Hall-effect joysticks, detachable TrueStrike controllers, a built-in kickstand, FPS mouse mode and a small touchpad. Hall-effect sensing is designed to avoid the physical wear mechanism associated with conventional joystick potentiometers, but it does not make a stick immune to every failure or guarantee a particular feel. The detachable design lets you place the screen on a table while holding the controllers separately, or leave the device propped up for a video or local multiplayer session.

FPS mouse mode and the touchpad are useful for mouse-heavy games, strategy titles and Windows navigation. They also add controls to learn and hardware to carry. If you almost always play with the device in your hands, the X20’s simpler, integrated layout is less complicated. If you switch between handheld, tabletop and mouse-style play, the Legion’s extra mechanisms are the reason to accept its larger chassis.

Battery life: published claims and independent test results

ASUS lists an 80Wh battery for the X20 and quotes up to 9.9 hours of light gaming and 2.7 hours of heavy AAA gaming. Those are the manufacturer’s internal figures under specific conditions: 75% brightness, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, 50% audio, 1920×1080 at 60Hz on low settings, with Silent mode for light gaming and Performance mode for heavy gaming. They are not a universal runtime guarantee.

Windows Central measured both review units in the same workloads. At maximum TDP in Cyberpunk 2077, the X20 lasted 1 hour 53 minutes and the Legion Go 2 lasted 2 hours 17 minutes. In Celeste, the results were 5 hours 6 minutes for the X20 and 5 hours 18 minutes for the Legion. Office tasks reversed the result: 14 hours 24 minutes for the X20 versus 11 hours 30 minutes for the Legion.

Manufacturer light-gaming claim Up to 9.9 hours Not stated in cited sources ASUS test claim under the listed 75% brightness, wireless, audio, resolution and Silent-mode conditions.
Manufacturer heavy-AAA claim Up to 2.7 hours Not stated in cited sources ASUS test claim using Performance mode and the listed 1080p/60 low-settings conditions.
Cyberpunk 2077, maximum TDP 1h 53m 2h 17m Windows Central same-test result; Legion lasted longer in this demanding workload.
Celeste 5h 06m 5h 18m Light game favored Legion slightly in that run.
Office tasks 14h 24m 11h 30m X20 lasted longer in Windows Central’s productivity test.

Battery choice therefore depends on your workload rather than the advertised capacity alone. A 35W AAA session can drain either machine quickly; a low-demand 2D game or office session can last several times longer. Screen brightness, refresh rate, frame-rate limits, wireless radios, background launchers and sleep behavior all change runtime. For travel, carry a charger and use a lower power mode when the game does not need maximum performance.

Windows software and performance tuning

Both handhelds run Windows 11, so they can install the same PC game stores, launchers, mods and desktop applications. The difference is the handheld layer. Windows Central reports that the X20 currently provides Microsoft’s Xbox full-screen handheld experience and easier performance and VRAM tuning. It is designed to put a controller-friendly game library and device controls ahead of the normal Windows desktop.

The Legion Go 2 can do the same underlying Windows tasks, but Windows Central found that changing performance behavior requires more adjustment through Lenovo software or the BIOS. That flexibility can be useful for experienced users who want to tune power, memory allocation or fan behavior, but it adds more places where a setting can be missed or reset after an update.

A sensible first-day setup

  1. Complete Windows 11 updates, then install the current graphics, chipset and handheld-control updates offered for your model.
  2. Start a demanding game in a balanced or Performance profile instead of assuming the highest 35W setting is always best.
  3. Use the X20’s Xbox full-screen interface if you want console-style navigation; keep the desktop available for launchers and file management.
  4. On the Legion Go 2, document any BIOS or Lenovo software changes so you can restore a known profile after firmware updates.
  5. Set a frame-rate cap that the game can sustain, then adjust resolution and refresh rate before raising power again.

These steps do not create a benchmark advantage by themselves. They reduce troubleshooting by establishing a repeatable baseline, which is especially important when comparing two devices whose TDP range is the same.

Storage, memory and expansion

The X20 configuration listed by Microsoft combines 24GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory with a 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 2280 SSD. Lenovo offers Legion Go 2 configurations reaching 32GB of memory and 2TB of storage. More memory is useful when you keep a browser, chat client and multiple launchers open beside a game; it does not automatically increase frame rates when the game already fits comfortably in available RAM.

Windows Central’s faster Legion SSD matters for loading and file operations, but capacity may matter more if your library contains several 100GB-class games. Both devices can be expanded with removable storage, and Microsoft lists MicroSD Express support for the X20. Microsoft’s accessory list names SanDisk 512GB, 1TB and 2TB cards for the ROG Xbox Ally, so verify that a card is explicitly rated for the required MicroSD Express performance rather than choosing solely by capacity.

When installing games on a microSD card, keep frequently played or streaming-heavy titles on the internal SSD if load times are a priority. Use the removable card for a larger library, emulation files or games where the storage speed is less noticeable. The Legion’s exact card specification and included capacity vary by configuration, so check the model number before buying an expansion card.

Docking, protection and travel

The X20 can be paired with the ROG 100W Gaming Charger Dock when you want a desk setup that supplies power while connecting the handheld to a larger display or peripherals. A dock does not turn the integrated GPU into a desktop graphics card; its value is cable management, charging headroom and convenient USB or display connections. Confirm the dock’s port layout and the monitor output you need before purchase.

For transport, the ROG Xbox Ally Premium Case is the matching protection accessory listed by Microsoft. A fitted case is particularly useful for protecting the OLED panel, triggers and joysticks in a bag. The Legion Go 2’s detachable controllers and kickstand add more moving parts to protect, so choose a case designed for the complete Legion assembly rather than a generic tablet sleeve.

Buy the ROG Xbox Ally X20 if…

  • You prefer a compact device that feels like an Xbox controller with a screen attached.
  • You play in bright rooms or outdoors and value the documented 1,400-nit peak-brightness figure.
  • You want Microsoft’s current Xbox full-screen handheld experience and less time spent tuning BIOS or vendor utilities.
  • Your games benefit from the small CPU/GPU lead seen in Windows Central’s comparison, and the X20’s 1TB internal drive is sufficient.

Buy the Lenovo Legion Go 2 if…

  • You will notice the larger 8.8-inch 1920×1200 OLED more than a modest benchmark difference.
  • You move large games frequently or want a configuration with up to 2TB storage and up to 32GB memory.
  • You want detachable controllers, a kickstand, Hall-effect sticks, FPS mouse mode or a touchpad.
  • You are comfortable using Lenovo software or BIOS controls to tune the system.

Bottom line

The ROG Xbox Ally X20 and Lenovo Legion Go 2 are close in processor class but optimized for different experiences. X20 is the focused handheld: comfortable Xbox-style controls, bright OLED, Microsoft’s streamlined interface and a slight CPU/GPU edge in the cited tests. Legion Go 2 is the flexible handheld PC: a larger 144Hz OLED, faster SSD performance, higher-capacity configurations and controls that can separate from the screen. Select the X20 for simplicity and handheld comfort; select the Legion Go 2 when screen size, storage speed and versatility outweigh those priorities.
