The XG16AHPE is a 15.6-inch portable monitor built around a 1920 × 1080 IPS panel. You can carry it between rooms, place it beside a laptop, connect it to a console or camera, and play without an immediate wall outlet. The design weighs 900g and has an 11.8mm profile according to ASUS. That mobility is the reason to buy it; the display is not intended to replace a large, height-adjustable desktop screen for all-day work.

Those are manufacturer maximums, not a guaranteed result for every brightness level, game, cable, or host device. In an independent RTINGS review published in December 2021, the monitor lasted nearly three hours at maximum refresh. Treat that result as a dated test observation rather than a promise about every current unit or workload.

Where it performs well
Fast motion in a portable format
The 144Hz panel is the XG16AHPE’s defining feature. ASUS specifies the refresh rate and G-SYNC compatibility, while RTINGS reported fast response and very low input lag in its December 2021 testing. If your laptop or console can render more than 60 frames per second, motion and camera movement should look clearer than on a standard 60Hz travel monitor. The benefit is most noticeable in competitive games, first-person shooters, racing titles, and desktop scrolling.
At 1080p, the graphics workload is also relatively modest. A source that struggles to drive a high-resolution external monitor may still reach high frame rates here. Variable refresh is not automatic in every connection: the manual distinguishes adaptive sync over Type-C from variable refresh over HDMI, so select the appropriate option in the monitor menu and source graphics settings.
Useful image characteristics for secondary work
RTINGS found the image sharp enough for clear text, with wide viewing angles and good gray uniformity. Those traits help when the monitor is used as a second screen for a laptop, a coding display while travelling, or a preview monitor for a camera. At 15.6 inches and 1080p, text is readable without demanding unusual scaling, although the physical area remains limited for side-by-side documents.

Many possible source devices
ASUS identifies laptops, tablets, phones, game consoles, and cameras as potential sources. USB-C is convenient when the source provides DisplayPort video over the connector. A phone must support DisplayPort Alt Mode for video output; USB-C alone does not guarantee that capability. Micro-HDMI provides a path for devices that output HDMI, but it requires a micro-HDMI cable or an appropriate adapter.
Battery-powered flexibility
The internal 7800mAh battery lets you play or work where an outlet is inconvenient. It can also prevent a portable setup from drawing all of its power from a laptop battery immediately. The practical expectation is a short session, not an entire train journey or workday: ASUS’s best-case figure is up to three hours at 144Hz, and the independent December 2021 test was nearly three hours at maximum refresh.
Important limitations before buying
Small workspace and less immersion
A 15.6-inch 16:9 panel is compact, but it cannot show as much information as a larger desktop monitor. RTINGS noted that multitasking is constrained and gaming feels less immersive than on a larger display. Two full-size application windows may require scaling or constant resizing. For spreadsheets, video editing timelines, or a long coding session, a 24-inch or larger monitor remains more comfortable.

Poorer ergonomics than a desk monitor
The integrated kickstand supports landscape and portrait orientation, yet it does not provide the height, tilt range, or stable arm adjustment of a conventional monitor stand. RTINGS characterized the ergonomics as poor. On a low table, the screen may sit below eye level, encouraging neck flexion during long sessions. A firm, elevated surface or a compatible mounting solution can improve the viewing angle, but that adds to the equipment you must carry.

No HDR and low contrast
RTINGS found no HDR support and a low contrast ratio. Dark scenes can look gray rather than deep black, especially in a dark room. The panel’s wide viewing angles and color consistency are useful, but they do not compensate for the absence of HDR when watching HDR video or playing games designed around bright highlights and deep shadows. Choose this monitor for refresh rate and portability, not cinematic dark-room image quality.
Runtime and charging are conditional
The battery is a convenience with a hard limit. Brightness, 144Hz operation, speakers, USB-C behavior, and the source device all affect consumption. The user guide warns that some notebooks and PCs do not provide enough power to charge the monitor while it is operating. Even when charging from the host is selected, the battery can continue to drain under certain power and device settings.

Therefore, a single USB-C cable should not be treated as a guaranteed all-day power solution. For a long session, plan an external USB-C power adapter or power bank that meets the monitor’s requirements, and verify that the source still supplies video separately. A power source that can charge but cannot carry DisplayPort video, or a video cable that lacks the required capabilities, will not produce the intended one-cable setup.
How to connect and configure it
USB-C laptop or tablet
- Check the source’s USB-C specifications for DisplayPort Alt Mode or equivalent video output. A data-and-charging-only port will not send an image.
- Connect a full-featured USB-C video cable between the source and the monitor’s USB-C input.
- Turn on the monitor and select USB-C as the input if it is not detected automatically.
- In the operating system’s display settings, choose duplicate or extend mode and set 1920 × 1080 at up to 144Hz.
- Enable adaptive sync where supported, then test whether the host is providing enough power. If the battery percentage falls while connected, add external power rather than assuming the cable is defective.
Phone
- Confirm that the phone supports DisplayPort Alt Mode. ASUS explicitly requires this for phone video.
- Use a USB-C cable or adapter that carries DisplayPort video and connect it to the monitor.
- Provide separate power if the phone cannot supply sufficient output or if the monitor battery is declining.
- Set the phone to its desktop or screen-mirroring mode, if available, and select the correct input on the monitor.
Console, camera, or HDMI computer
- Check whether the source exposes a standard HDMI output and obtain a cable or adapter ending in micro-HDMI for the monitor.
- Connect the HDMI lead, power the monitor, and select micro-HDMI as the input.
- Set the source to 1920 × 1080. If the source supports variable refresh over HDMI, enable it and verify that the monitor reports a supported 60–144Hz mode.
- For a console or camera session longer than the battery can cover, connect external USB-C power and confirm that the source remains on HDMI.
Portrait or landscape placement
Deploy the kickstand on a stable, flat surface and choose landscape for games and video or portrait for documents, chat, and vertically framed camera work. Because the stand’s height is limited, raise the entire monitor with a sturdy platform rather than balancing it on an unstable stack. Keep ventilation and cable bends clear of the hinge.

- Mobile gamers: You travel with a high-frame-rate laptop or console and want smoother motion than a 60Hz portable display provides.
- Hybrid workers and students: You need a second screen that fits in a bag and can work away from a desk for a few hours.
- Console owners with limited space: You want a small 1080p screen for a dorm, hotel, or temporary gaming station.
- Camera users: You need a portable preview display and your camera or capture setup can output compatible HDMI or USB-C video.
Who should choose something else
- Desk-based multitaskers: A larger monitor gives more usable windows and a better ergonomic range.
- HDR and dark-room viewers: The lack of HDR and low contrast make this a poor choice for premium movie or HDR-game presentation.

It is a strong secondary display when you value mobility and smooth play above all else.
Its compromises are fundamental rather than fixable with settings: 15.6 inches limits multitasking, the kickstand is awkward for long desk sessions, battery life is finite, and the IPS panel lacks HDR with low contrast in dark scenes. Buy it when those constraints fit your travel or gaming routine, and budget for the right video cable plus external power if your sessions routinely exceed a few hours.
