The ASUS ROG Strix B850-F Gaming WiFi7 Neo is a feature-rich ATX motherboard for AMD AM5 systems, but its value depends on whether you will use its four M.2 slots, 5 GbE, and build-friendly hardware. At the nearly $320 price Tom’s Hardware cited in its August 2026 review, it is expensive for B850; buyers should compare its current price with X870 boards and decide whether they need features such as onboard USB4, more SATA ports, or faster Wi-Fi.
What the B850-F Gaming WiFi7 Neo is
This is an ATX motherboard built around AMD’s AM5 socket and B850 chipset. ASUS’s product comparison also places the model in its AM5/B850 lineup. That makes it a fit for a compatible Ryzen desktop build, but not a drop-in upgrade for older AMD sockets.

Tom’s Hardware’s review describes the board as one of the better-equipped B850 refresh models. Its main appeal is a broad feature set rather than a demonstrated gaming-performance advantage over other boards.

What you get for the money
Storage for M.2-heavy builds
The board has four M.2 sockets: two PCIe 5.0 x4 and two PCIe 4.0 x4. That gives builders room for several NVMe drives without relying on add-in cards. The trade-off is just two SATA ports, which may be restrictive if you plan to reuse multiple SATA SSDs or hard drives.
#1 Best Overall
- Ready for Advanced AI PC: Designed for the future of AI computing, with the power and connectivity needed for demanding AI applications
- AMD AM5 Socket: Ready for AMD Ryzen 9000, 8000 and 7000 Series Desktop Processors
- Intelligent Control: ASUS-exclusive AI Advisor, AI Networking II and AEMP to simplify setup and improve performance
- Robust Power Solution: 16+2+2 power solution rated for 80A per stage with dual ProCool power connectors, high-quality alloy chokes and durable capacitors to support multi-core processors
- Optimized Thermal Design: Massive heatsinks with integrated I/O cover, and high-conductivity thermal pad
Tom’s Hardware noted that the primary M.2 heatsink made only light contact with the drive controller during inspection. That is worth considering if you expect sustained transfers from a hot PCIe 5.0 SSD; drive temperature and workload will also matter.
Networking and wireless
Wired networking is provided by Realtek 5 GbE, faster than standard gigabit Ethernet when the rest of the network supports it. Wireless is MediaTek Wi-Fi 7 operating at up to 160 MHz, with 6 GHz support, plus Bluetooth 5.4, according to the review’s specifications. The board does not have a 320 MHz Wi-Fi radio, so buyers seeking that wider Wi-Fi 7 channel capability should check another model’s exact radio specifications.

USB and audio
The rear I/O has 12 USB ports, including two 10 Gbps Type-C ports and another 5 Gbps Type-C port. There is also a front-panel 20 Gbps Type-C header for a compatible case. The board includes a Thunderbolt/USB4 header, but no onboard USB4 port; the header is not the same as built-in USB4 connectivity.
For audio, the review lists a Realtek ALC4080 codec and Savitech amplifier, an implementation Tom’s Hardware considered strong for this class.

Build conveniences and tuning
The board’s practical extras include tool-free M.2 heatsink and latch mechanisms, a push-button PCIe Q-Release, Q-LED status lights, and BIOS Flashback. These can make installing components or diagnosing a startup problem easier, but they do not themselves make games run faster.
For tuning, the review lists a BCLK clock generator and a 20-phase power design, including 16 80 A DrMOS devices for Vcore. Tom’s Hardware judged the VRM capacity ample for high-end Ryzen processors. Memory support is listed up to DDR5-8400+ with overclocking and DDR5-9200 with an APU; those are specification limits, not a guarantee that every CPU and memory kit will run at those speeds. In its short hands-on test, a DDR5-8000 kit absent from the memory support list was unstable, so check ASUS’s current memory QVL for the exact kit you intend to use.

Performance: capable, not a reason to expect more FPS
Tom’s Hardware characterized most synthetic and timed-application results as average to above average and said gaming results were as expected. The review does not establish a gaming frame-rate uplift over another motherboard, so the case for this model is its connectivity, storage, and convenience features rather than extra performance from the board alone.
In the review’s DDR5-7200 power test configuration, Tom’s Hardware recorded 73 W at idle and 253 W at peak, describing the result as among the more efficient B850/X870 results in that test set. Those are measurements from that review setup, not expected consumption figures for every system.

Is the price justified?
Joe Shields’s Tom’s Hardware review, published 25 August 2026, described the board as nearly $320 and noted that X870 boards enter the comparison above $300. The same review page displayed retailer offers of $289.99 and $319.99, as well as a separate Amazon offer of $402.38. Those were page snapshots with differing sellers or listings, not MSRP or a guaranteed current price. Check the price and availability where you shop before deciding.
At a price close to an X870 alternative, compare the features you will actually use rather than assuming the chipset name alone settles the choice. In particular, check:
- Current total price, including any shipping or other checkout costs.
- How many M.2 slots you need and which are PCIe 5.0 versus PCIe 4.0.
- Whether you need onboard USB4, rather than a USB4 header.
- Whether 5 GbE is useful on your wired network.
- Whether 160 MHz Wi-Fi 7 meets your needs and is supported by your router and client devices.
- Whether two SATA ports are enough for your drives.
- Whether the Q-Release hardware and BCLK tuning features are worth paying extra for.
What is different about the Neo?
The name in this review is ASUS ROG Strix B850-F Gaming WiFi7 Neo. ASUS’s comparison document identifies it as a B850, AM5, ATX board, while Tom’s Hardware supplies the detailed specifications discussed above. The available evidence here does not establish a full feature-by-feature comparison with a differently named “B850-F Gaming WiFi” model, so do not assume that a listing without “Neo” has the same hardware. Confirm the exact model name and specifications on the product page before buying.

Who should buy it?
- Consider it if you want several M.2 drives, 5 GbE, plentiful rear USB, and easy-to-use build features in one ATX AM5 board, and its current price is competitive with the alternatives you are considering.
- Look elsewhere if you need more than two SATA ports, built-in USB4, or Wi-Fi 7 at 320 MHz, or if a similarly priced X870 board better matches your requirements.
