The ASUS ROG Phone 8 Pro is a premium gaming phone designed to look and work more like a conventional flagship than earlier ROG models. Its appeal is the combination of gaming controls and performance-focused hardware with a high-spec display and a more versatile camera system. It makes the most sense if you will use those gaming features; its premium positioning is harder to justify if price, battery endurance, or top-tier camera performance matters more.
What kind of phone is the ROG Phone 8 Pro?
ASUS positions the ROG Phone 8 Pro for both gaming and everyday use, describing it as a companion for gaming, social scrolling, and streaming. That is the company’s marketing, not an independent verdict. Reviews published in 2024 likewise saw a broader-audience gaming phone, though they differed in emphasis: TechRadar focused on its wider appeal and high cost, Tech Advisor described it as a powerful gaming phone while noting battery life had not improved, and GSMArena highlighted its camera upgrade and mainstream appeal.

The central tradeoff is straightforward: you are paying for a gaming-oriented feature set in a phone with a less overtly gamer-focused design. If you will regularly use its gaming controls and accessory options, that mix may be attractive. If you mainly want a conventional flagship, the gaming premium may be less useful.

Gaming controls and accessories
The phone’s gaming identity is not just a design theme; its hardware and optional accessories are intended to support mobile play. The accessory ecosystem can extend the experience, but bundle contents and regional availability matter when comparing configurations.
#1 Best Overall
- Black, comes with Cooling Fan and Screen Protection, Charger, Charging Cable and Instruction Manual
- AeroActive Cooler X: an optional gaming accessory. Check whether it is included with the specific configuration you are considering.
- ROG Tessen: ASUS India identifies this plug-in mobile controller for ROG Phone 8. Treat it as an optional accessory and confirm regional compatibility before buying.
Neither accessory should be assumed to come with every ROG Phone 8 Pro package. Confirm the exact model compatibility, local stock, and what is in the box with the seller.
Display: large and bright by ASUS’s specification
ASUS India lists a 6.78-inch LTPO AMOLED display with peak brightness of up to 2500 nits. These are ASUS’s regional product specifications, not independently measured results; brightness in use can vary with conditions and content. The size and panel type suit gaming and video, but buyers who prefer a compact phone should consider the dimensions before choosing it.

Performance, battery, and charging
The ROG Phone 8 Pro is built as a high-powered gaming phone, but the supplied 2024 reviews do not establish a comparable independent benchmark figure to quantify its performance against current phones. Tech Advisor’s review noted that battery life had not improved over the previous generation. That is a review-based comparison, not a claim that every user will see the same endurance.

Camera: more versatile than the gaming-phone stereotype
The camera setup is a meaningful part of the phone’s broader flagship pitch. ASUS’s global specifications list a 32 MP telephoto camera with OIS and 3x optical zoom. ASUS India also specifies 6-axis hybrid gimbal stabilization. These are vendor-published specifications, not independent test results.
GSMArena’s 2024 review emphasized the camera upgrade, including the added versatility of a dedicated telephoto lens alongside a stabilized main camera. That makes the system more flexible than many buyers might expect from a gaming-first phone. The reviews do not establish that it leads conventional camera flagships, so choose it for the combination of gaming features and camera versatility—not on an assumption that it offers the strongest cameras available.

Design and everyday use
The ROG Phone 8 Pro moves toward a more conventional flagship appearance and feature mix than older, more overtly gamer-focused ROG designs. That broader appeal is a recurring theme in the 2024 reviews, but it does not remove the phone’s premium gaming positioning. Consider whether you want a phone that can serve as an everyday device while retaining gaming hardware, or whether a standard flagship would better match your priorities.
Price and availability: launch prices are historical
Tom’s Guide reported 2024 launch prices of $1,199 for the ROG Phone 8 Pro and $1,499 for the Pro Edition in the US, and £1,099 and £1,299 respectively in the UK. These are historical launch figures, not current retail prices. Current local pricing, stock, and accessory inventory have not been established here, so check the exact configuration and seller in your region before deciding.

Who should buy the ASUS ROG Phone 8 Pro?
Consider it if you actively want a gaming phone, value its controls and optional accessory ecosystem, and prefer a design that can pass more easily as an everyday flagship. It is less compelling if your first priorities are the lowest price, maximum battery endurance, or the strongest camera performance available from a conventional flagship. Those tradeoffs reflect the reviewed positioning of the phone, not a new hands-on test.
