The ASUS Prime N100I-D D4 is a 17 × 17 cm Mini-ITX board with an onboard Intel Processor N100, one DDR4 SO-DIMM slot (ASUS maximum: 16 GB), one M.2 PCIe 3.0 x2 socket, one SATA port and a PCIe 3.0 x1 expansion slot. It can suit a quiet small PC, media box or modest home server, but its single memory slot, 16 GB published memory ceiling and single native SATA connection are decisive limits for expandable builds.
What the ASUS Prime N100I-D D4 actually is
ASUS describes this as a low-power, fan-less motherboard for Intel Processor N100. The processor is permanently onboard, so this is not a socketed motherboard: you cannot replace the N100 with another CPU. The board uses the Mini-ITX form factor and measures 17 × 17 cm (6.7 × 6.7 in). See the ASUS product overview and full technical specifications.

Storage link figures are interface specifications, not guaranteed real-world throughput: ASUS lists the M.2 connection as 16 Gbps theoretical and notes that actual transfer speeds will be lower.
How much RAM can the N100I-D D4 use?
For this motherboard, the answer is 16 GB according to ASUS’s published specification. It has a single DDR4 SO-DIMM slot, so there is no second slot for later expansion. ASUS lists DDR4 non-ECC unbuffered memory and data rates from 2133 to 3200 MT/s depending on the installed memory and CPU configuration. Check the board’s support and memory compatibility list before buying.
#1 Best Overall
- Intel LGA 1700 Socket: Ready for Intel Core 14th & 13th Gen Processors, Intel Core 12th Gen, Pentium Gold and Celeron Processors
- Ultrafast Connectivity: PCIe 5.0, two M.2 slots, Realtek 2.5Gb Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6, rear USB 5Gbps Type-A, front USB 5Gbps support
- Comprehensive Cooling: VRM heatsink, PCH heatsink, hybrid fan headers and Fan Xpert 2+
- Aura Sync RGB Lighting: Onboard Addressable Gen 2 headers for RGB LED strips, easily synced with Aura Sync-capable hardware
Online questions such as “Can the Intel N100 handle 32 GB of RAM?” concern the processor in general; they do not override this board’s manufacturer-rated 16 GB limit. A 32 GB module is therefore outside the documented configuration for the N100I-D D4.
Does it have built-in Wi-Fi?
No wireless radio is listed as included. The board provides an M.2 Key E slot that can accept a compatible Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module, sold separately by ASUS’s documentation. Confirm that the module uses the supported Key E interface and its required CNVi or PCIe connection before ordering. Wired networking is provided by one Realtek 1 Gb Ethernet port.

- Intel LGA 1700 socket: Ready for 12th Gen Intel processors
- Comprehensive cooling: VRM heatsink, PCH heatsink and Fan Xpert
- Ultrafast connectivity: PCIe 4.0, DDR4, 32Gbps M.2 slot, Realtek 1 Gb Ethernet, USB 3.2 Gen 1 and V-M.2 Key E slot for Wi-Fi
How many drives can it connect without an expansion card?
Two internal drives can be connected natively: one M.2 2260/2280 PCIe 3.0 x2 device and one SATA 6 Gb/s drive. The M.2 socket is Key M and is the documented slot for an NVMe-style PCIe device; the board does not list multiple SATA ports.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11A multi-drive NAS therefore needs an expansion strategy, such as a compatible PCIe SATA adapter in the single PCIe 3.0 x1 slot. ASUS advises checking its supported peripheral list for expansion-device compatibility. An adapter, its bandwidth, driver support and physical fit can become the limiting factors, so validate those details before committing to a disk count.

Is the ASUS Prime N100I-D D4 really fanless?
“Fanless” refers to the processor cooling design: ASUS lists an onboard CPU heatsink rather than a CPU-fan requirement. The board also has one 4-pin chassis-fan header with PWM/DC fan detection. That means a completely fanless system is possible in an appropriate case, while a builder can add a case fan for airflow or personal preference. ASUS has not published a workload-specific temperature, noise or performance result for this article, so do not treat fanless as a guarantee that every enclosure or sustained workload will remain cool without airflow.
Display, USB and legacy connectivity
The rear I/O mix is broad for a compact board: DisplayPort, HDMI and VGA cover current digital monitors and older displays; six rear Type-A USB ports span 10 Gb/s, 5 Gb/s and USB 2.0 speeds; and ASUS lists COM and PS/2 connectivity in addition to Ethernet. Connector-level placement and pin details can change by revision or region, so use the current ASUS specification page when matching a case or peripheral.

What to verify before buying
- Memory: select one DDR4 SO-DIMM no larger than the ASUS-specified 16 GB maximum and cross-check the support list.
- Storage: choose an M.2 2260 or 2280 PCIe 3.0 x2 drive if using the onboard socket; plan separately for any additional SATA disks.
- Wireless: budget for a separately purchased, interface-compatible M.2 Key E Wi-Fi/Bluetooth module if Ethernet is insufficient.
- Expansion: confirm that a PCIe 3.0 x1 SATA or other adapter is supported and physically fits the intended case.
- Power and case: ensure the Mini-ITX chassis and power supply provide room for the 24-pin and 4-pin +12 V connectors, storage, and any adapter.
- Cooling: check case ventilation for sustained workloads; the integrated heatsink does not establish a universal thermal limit.
- Operating system: ASUS lists Windows 11 22H2 or later and Windows 10 64-bit. Verify support for any other OS with the OS vendor and board documentation.
- Package: the user guide lists two SATA cables, an I/O shield, M.2 screw packages and a user guide, but confirm contents with the retailer and region. ASUS user guide.
Who should choose it?
Good fits
- A compact desktop, office PC or media system needing integrated graphics and several display choices.
- A quiet, low-power build where 16 GB of RAM, one NVMe drive and one SATA drive are sufficient.
- An embedded or legacy-peripheral project that benefits from VGA, COM or PS/2 alongside modern USB.
Reasons to choose another board
- You need more than 16 GB of memory or two DIMM slots.
- You require several native SATA ports for a multi-disk NAS without relying on an adapter.
- You need faster-than-gigabit networking, a wider PCIe slot, or built-in wireless.
- Your workload needs a socketed CPU or performance beyond the onboard N100 platform.
How to compare it with another integrated-CPU Mini-ITX board
Use the same checklist for both boards: included processor and workload capability; memory slot type and maximum; number and type of SATA and M.2 connections; PCIe slot count and lane width; wired and wireless networking; display, USB and legacy I/O; cooling and airflow requirements; power connectors; and physical form factor. Without a named competing board and comparable evidence, the N100I-D D4 should not be called universally faster or better.
