For most office, study, web and travel work that runs well on macOS, the 13-inch MacBook Air with M4 is the safer default. Its integrated macOS experience, haptic trackpad, webcam, speakers and overall polish are the strengths highlighted by an RTINGS comparison updated August 26, 2026.

Choose an ASUS Zenbook 14 OLED UX3405 instead when your work depends on Windows-only software, OLED contrast, 120Hz motion, touch or pen input, HDMI, USB-A or a particular Windows hardware setup. “ASUS OLED laptop” describes a family, not one fixed specification, so the exact processor, panel, memory, storage and battery must be checked before you compare prices or performance.

Start with the exact laptops, not the product-family names

The fairest current reference points are the ASUS Zenbook 14 OLED UX3405 and the Apple MacBook Air 13-inch with M4, introduced for the 2025 model year. They are both thin, integrated-graphics ultraportables, but they make different trade-offs. The Zenbook offers a wider range of screens and physical connections; the Air offers a tightly integrated operating system and input-device experience.

ASUS sells multiple UX3405 configurations. Some have a 3K 2880×1800 OLED panel running at up to 120Hz, while other regional or lower-cost versions use 60Hz FHD or WUXGA OLED panels. CPU, RAM, SSD, touch support, stylus support and weight can also change. A recommendation that is correct for a 120Hz Core Ultra configuration may be wrong for a 60Hz model with a different processor.

The RTINGS result needs the same qualification. Its updated comparison found the Zenbook A14 had better battery life and the MacBook Air had the more premium overall experience, including a brighter, sharper display, easier haptic touchpad, better webcam and fuller-sounding speakers. That test used the A14 UX3407 configuration, not every UX3405 variant. Treat it as evidence about that tested configuration, not a universal score for all ASUS OLED laptops.

Core specifications at a glance

Specification ASUS Zenbook 14 OLED UX3405 MacBook Air 13-inch with M4 (2025)
Operating system Windows 11 configurations are available; exact edition depends on SKU macOS; fanless Apple-silicon design
Display 14-inch OLED options, from 60Hz FHD/WUXGA to 3K (2880×1800) at up to 120Hz; touch and stylus options on selected SKUs 13.6-inch 2560×1664 LED-backlit IPS display
Color and HDR Selected 3K panels specify 100% DCI-P3 and HDR True Black; verify the individual panel Apple specifies the IPS display; the comparative source rated it brighter and sharper than the tested Zenbook
Processor options Up to Intel Core Ultra 9 285H; some configurations differ Apple M4; memory and storage choices vary by configuration
Graphics Intel Arc graphics on qualifying configurations; integrated graphics class Integrated Apple graphics; configuration-dependent capability
Memory and storage ceilings Up to 32GB LPDDR5X RAM and up to 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD in ASUS’s UX3405 specification Exact capacity options depend on the Air configuration; the cited technical specification does not establish a matching maximum for this comparison
Battery capacity 75Wh in the UX3405 specification 66.5Wh lithium-polymer battery
Ports Two Thunderbolt 4 ports, USB-A, HDMI 2.1 and 3.5mm audio jack Port selection is centered on USB-C/Thunderbolt and the MagSafe charging connection; check the exact Air specification for the peripherals you own
Listed size and weight 14.9mm thick; 1.20–1.28kg listed range depending on configuration Exact weight is configuration-specific and is not stated in the cited figures

The figures above come from ASUS and Apple technical materials. A larger watt-hour rating is not a runtime guarantee, and a processor name alone does not predict sustained performance in every chassis.

Display: OLED flexibility versus a consistent IPS experience

What the Zenbook’s OLED options change

On a qualifying UX3405, OLED gives each pixel independent light control. Dark interfaces can look genuinely black, high-contrast text and video benefit from the panel’s contrast, and the 3K 2880×1800 option provides a large working canvas. ASUS lists up to 120Hz refresh and a 0.2ms response time for the 3K panel, plus 100% DCI-P3 and HDR True Black variants. Scrolling, timeline movement and pen strokes can look smoother at 120Hz than at 60Hz.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those benefits are not guaranteed by the words “Zenbook 14 OLED.” A 60Hz FHD or WUXGA panel has a different amount of workspace and motion feel from the 3K 120Hz model. Some configurations omit touch or stylus support. Before ordering, read the retailer’s full model code and match it with ASUS’s specification: resolution, refresh rate, touch layer, color gamut, HDR designation and included pen support should all agree.

What the MacBook Air’s IPS panel offers

The M4 Air uses a 13.6-inch 2560×1664 LED-backlit IPS display. It is smaller than the Zenbook’s nominal 14 inches, but its pixel count is still ample for documents, browser tabs and photo work. RTINGS rated the tested Air’s display brighter and sharper than the tested Zenbook A14. No brightness number for either machine is established by the supplied specifications, so avoid treating that comparison as a guaranteed measurement for every UX3405 panel.

IPS avoids the need to choose among several ASUS panel variants, but it does not provide the Zenbook’s OLED black levels or 120Hz option. For long reading sessions, compare each screen in the lighting where you work. Glossy surfaces can show reflections; the degree depends on the exact panel coating and room lighting, neither of which is quantified in the cited documents.

Is OLED worth potentially giving up battery life?

There is no controlled, like-for-like UX3405-versus-M4 battery test in the supplied evidence. OLED power use changes with image content and brightness, while battery runtime also depends on CPU, refresh rate, wireless activity, applications and firmware. Therefore, do not infer endurance from “OLED” or from the 75Wh-versus-66.5Wh capacity comparison. If display contrast and HDR are central to your work, select the confirmed 3K OLED SKU; if unplugged time is the priority, compare reviews of that exact configuration under a test method you can reproduce.

Operating system and application compatibility come first

When Windows makes the Zenbook the practical choice

Select the Zenbook when your employer, school or clients require Windows-only software. Engineering, specialist business, device-management and some classroom applications may have no macOS release or may provide an incomplete feature set. Windows 11 also gives you the broad x86 software catalog expected by many organizations. Confirm licensing, plug-ins, drivers, macros and hardware-dongle support with the software publisher before buying; “a Windows version exists” does not prove that every workflow component works.

The Zenbook’s ports can matter as much as Windows itself. HDMI 2.1 can connect a display or projector directly, USB-A accepts many existing drives, keyboards and adapters, and two Thunderbolt 4 ports support modern high-speed accessories. You may still need a hub for several displays or a desk full of legacy devices, but basic connections do not require converting every plug.

When macOS and Apple-device continuity make the Air better

The Air is the stronger starting point if your required applications are native to macOS and you already use an iPhone or iPad. Platform continuity, Apple-specific applications and a consistent system interface can remove setup friction that specifications do not show. Check every essential application, plug-in, VPN client, printer utility and collaboration tool in its current macOS version before purchase.

Because the Air is fanless, it operates without a conventional cooling fan. That can make quiet offices, libraries and bedrooms more pleasant, but fanless operation does not automatically mean faster sustained work. For long renders, code builds or exports, test the exact application and configuration rather than relying on a short benchmark.

Which laptop fits each common workload?

Workload or priority Better starting point Reason and qualification
Office documents, study, browsing and video calls MacBook Air RTINGS favored its overall experience, webcam, speakers and haptic trackpad; Apple specifies a high-resolution 13.6-inch display.
Photo or video work where contrast and color matter Zenbook 14 OLED A qualifying UX3405 can provide 3K OLED, 100% DCI-P3 and HDR options. Confirm the panel and your color-management requirements.
Windows-only business, engineering or school software Zenbook Windows 11 and broad x86 compatibility avoid a macOS application gap.
iPhone/iPad workflow and macOS applications MacBook Air Continuity and native macOS software are decisive; verify each required application first.
Touch, handwriting or pen annotation Zenbook Touchscreen and stylus-supported UX3405 configurations are listed by ASUS.
HDMI equipment and legacy USB peripherals Zenbook Its official specification lists HDMI 2.1, USB-A and two Thunderbolt 4 ports.
Longest sessions away from an outlet Compare exact reviews RTINGS’ battery result concerns the A14 UX3407, while ASUS’s claims apply to particular UX3405 test configurations. Capacity alone cannot settle the question.
Sustained rendering, 3D work or gaming Neither by default Both are thin integrated-graphics ultraportables. Check the exact CPU/GPU, cooling behavior and application benchmarks before committing.

Performance and thermals: avoid headline-spec assumptions

The UX3405 can be configured with up to an Intel Core Ultra 9 285H and Intel Arc graphics on qualifying models. “Up to” describes the top option, not the machine on every shelf. A lower-tier processor, smaller memory configuration or 60Hz panel may be a better value for office work, while a higher-tier part can draw more power and produce more heat under sustained loads.

The M4 Air uses Apple’s own processor platform and a fanless chassis. Short interactive tasks can feel fast on either system, but long exports, compiles and simulations expose cooling limits. Compare tests that run your actual software for several minutes, not just a burst benchmark. Note whether the test records performance while plugged in, on battery, at a specific room temperature and with a particular memory capacity.

Neither machine should be treated as a default gaming or workstation replacement. Integrated graphics can handle ordinary creative acceleration and many productivity tasks, but demanding games, complex 3D scenes or long high-resolution video exports may require a thicker laptop with a discrete GPU. If that is your primary workload, evaluate that class of machine instead of choosing between these ultraportables on screen quality alone.

Battery life: what can and cannot be concluded

The Zenbook specification lists a 75Wh battery, compared with 66.5Wh for the MacBook Air. Those are capacities, not hours. Runtime changes with screen brightness, refresh rate, wireless signal, browser tabs, CPU package power, video playback and background services.

RTINGS reported better battery life for the Zenbook A14 UX3407 in its August 26, 2026 comparison. That result is useful for the tested A14, but it is not a measured UX3405 result. ASUS battery-life figures are likewise tied to particular test configurations. Look for a test of the exact processor, panel and battery in the SKU you intend to buy, and check whether the method reflects your workload.

For travel, also compare charging equipment and your routine. A larger battery may add weight; a 120Hz OLED panel may be run at a different refresh setting; and a USB-C charger can be shared with phones and tablets only if its power profile suits the laptop. The cited materials do not establish a universal runtime winner between every UX3405 and every M4 Air.

Portability, keyboard, trackpad, camera and sound

Size and carrying weight

ASUS lists the UX3405 at 14.9mm thick and between 1.20kg and 1.28kg, depending on configuration. That is compact for a 14-inch laptop, but the exact panel and battery choice can alter the weight. The supplied Apple figures do not state a matching Air weight, so do not claim a precise weight advantage without checking the configuration sold in your country.

Input quality and daily comfort

RTINGS found the MacBook Air’s haptic touchpad easier to use than the tested Zenbook’s touchpad. That distinction matters if you spend all day selecting text, dragging windows or editing photos without a mouse. The Air also received the stronger overall polish assessment. The Zenbook counters with touch and pen options that the Air does not provide in the cited specifications. Decide whether precision trackpad gestures or direct screen input is more valuable to your routine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Webcam and speakers

The same RTINGS comparison favored the MacBook Air’s webcam and fuller-sounding speakers. That can improve frequent video meetings and casual media use without accessories. It does not establish a numerical camera resolution or microphone test for every configuration. If meeting quality is business-critical, test the camera in your lighting and confirm that your conferencing software exposes the controls you need.

Ports, monitors and desk setups

The UX3405 is the straightforward choice for a mixed-peripheral desk: two Thunderbolt 4 ports cover modern high-speed devices, USB-A handles older accessories, HDMI 2.1 connects a compatible display or projector, and the 3.5mm jack supports wired audio. Check the exact port arrangement and charging behavior on the regional specification before installing a permanent dock.

An Air-centered desk can still work well, but you should inventory cables and displays first. Count how many monitors you need, whether they accept the laptop’s available connection, whether a dock is required and whether your storage devices use USB-A. A USB-C or Thunderbolt hub is a reasonable secondary purchase when a Zenbook or Air owner needs additional displays or legacy peripherals; include its cost and power-delivery limits in the setup plan.

Repairability, upgrades and long-term ownership

The supplied specifications do not establish a comparative repairability score, user-upgrade path or parts-availability policy for these models. Do not assume that a larger chassis or a particular operating system guarantees easier repairs. Before purchase, check the service manual or regional support policy for the exact model, whether memory is soldered, whether the SSD is replaceable, and how battery service is handled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Both platforms reward careful configuration at purchase. On the UX3405, memory is specified as LPDDR5X and the listed ceiling is 32GB; choose enough RAM for your applications because the cited material does not promise a later memory upgrade. Storage is listed up to 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD. On the Air, select memory and storage based on your expected project files and application requirements rather than assuming external storage will solve every future limit.

Price and value: compare complete configurations

A universal price winner cannot be named from the available authoritative figures. Retail prices vary by country, retailer, processor, display, memory, storage and promotions. Compare complete model codes, not the lowest advertised family price.

For each candidate, record:

  • Processor model and graphics configuration.
  • Display resolution, refresh rate, touch support, color specification and HDR designation.
  • Installed RAM and SSD capacity.
  • Battery capacity and the charger included in the box.
  • Warranty, service coverage and local return terms.
  • The cost of any dock, HDMI adapter, USB-A adapter, external storage or pen required for your desk.

A cheaper 60Hz OLED UX3405 may not be equivalent to the 3K 120Hz model used in a review. Conversely, paying for a high-end processor is poor value if your work is browser-based and the extra performance increases cost without changing your workflow.

A practical buying procedure

  1. List non-negotiable applications. Mark each as Windows-only, macOS-compatible or browser-based. Include plug-ins, drivers, macros, VPN tools and school or employer requirements.
  2. Choose the display requirement. Select 3K 120Hz OLED, a lower-resolution OLED, or the Air’s 13.6-inch IPS according to your need for contrast, motion, workspace, touch and pen input.
  3. Match the exact SKU. Confirm CPU, graphics, RAM, SSD, panel, battery, weight and operating system in the manufacturer’s specification, not only in a retailer headline.
  4. Inventory your peripherals. Count HDMI displays, USB-A devices, audio gear, storage and card readers. Add a hub only where the chosen laptop cannot connect directly.
  5. Check workload-specific tests. For rendering, coding, photo or video work, use sustained tests of the same processor and memory configuration. For travel, find a battery test using the same panel and brightness conditions.
  6. Calculate complete cost. Add required software, storage, dock, pen, charger and local warranty coverage before comparing value.
  7. Buy from a source with a workable return period. Use that period to test your applications, camera, speakers, display reflections, sleep/wake behavior, monitor connections and battery routine.

Bottom-line recommendations by reader type

Choose the MacBook Air M4 when

  • Your work is macOS-compatible and you value a cohesive, low-friction system.
  • You spend hours on trackpad gestures, video calls and spoken or streamed media.
  • You already use Apple devices and the relevant continuity features save daily steps.
  • You prefer one consistent IPS display specification over a range of ASUS panel variants.

Choose the ASUS Zenbook 14 OLED UX3405 when

  • A required application or peripheral is Windows-only.
  • OLED contrast, a 3K canvas, 120Hz motion, HDR, touch or pen input is central to your work.
  • You need built-in HDMI 2.1, USB-A, two Thunderbolt 4 ports or a headphone jack.
  • You have verified the exact CPU, panel, RAM, SSD and battery rather than buying on the family name.

For a general macOS-compatible workload, the MacBook Air remains the safer all-round recommendation based on the cited comparison. The Zenbook is the more capable fit for Windows-first, display-first and port-first workflows, provided the specific UX3405 configuration delivers the features you actually need.
