For a permanent game library, an internal M.2 NVMe SSD is usually the better choice—provided your exact ASUS laptop supports it. It stays inside the machine, uses no USB port and avoids cable or accidental-disconnection problems. A USB external SSD is the easier removable option when you need portability, a quick capacity increase or a laptop that is difficult to open. Neither option should be expected to increase game FPS simply because it is an SSD.
Internal or external: the short decision
Your complete ASUS model number determines whether an internal upgrade is possible. ASUS does not use one storage design across all of its gaming notebooks: a model may have a free M.2 slot, require replacement of the existing drive, impose a particular drive size or capacity limit, or provide no practical upgrade path for the user. Check the exact model’s technical specifications before buying anything.

| What matters | Internal M.2 NVMe SSD | External USB SSD |
|---|---|---|
| Best use | Permanent, frequently played game library | Removable or secondary library |
| Installation | Requires opening the laptop or using an authorized service center | Connect the drive and create a game-library location |
| Port use | No USB port occupied | Uses a USB port and must remain connected while games are stored there |
| Compatibility check | Exact slot, interface, dimensions, capacity and configuration | Drive connector, cable and host USB port |
| Portability | Remains installed in the laptop | Easy to move between compatible computers |
| Performance evidence | PCIe NVMe is a high-speed storage platform, but no universal game benchmark proves an upgrade will improve loading or FPS | Throughput depends on the slowest USB link and actual usage; interface ratings are not game benchmarks |
| Current price comparison | Not stated | Not stated |
Choose internal storage when you want a set-and-forget library and your model has a confirmed compatible slot or replacement procedure. Choose external storage when convenience and removability outweigh the need for the most reliable permanent setup.

Why the exact ASUS model changes the answer
Marketing names are not enough
Names such as a product family and screen size can cover several generations and configurations. The complete model name or model number identifies the motherboard, installed drive arrangement and regional specification that matter for an upgrade. Record it from the label on the chassis, the original invoice, MyASUS, or Windows System Information before searching for a replacement.

What ASUS says to verify
ASUS Support instructs owners to use the product’s technical specifications to determine whether the hardware supports a memory or SSD upgrade and what maximum specifications are supported. If the storage expansion information is unclear, ASUS recommends consulting a local authorized service center. That advice is important for models where opening the bottom cover, removing a heat spreader or replacing the original drive has model-specific consequences.
Examples that show why assumptions fail
ASUS’s 2024 ROG Zephyrus G16 specifications list two M.2 PCIe expansion slots. Certain 2026 Zephyrus G16 configurations list PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 storage and two M.2 PCIe slots. These pages demonstrate that a particular model can offer multiple slots and a stated PCIe generation; they are not evidence that every TUF, ROG or other ASUS gaming notebook has the same arrangement. Do not use a Zephyrus specification as compatibility advice for another ASUS family.
How to check whether your laptop can take an internal SSD
- Identify the complete model. Write down the full model number, not just the family name or display size. Different configurations sold under a similar name can have different storage layouts.
- Open the exact product page on the ASUS website. Go to the model’s technical specifications and locate the storage section. ASUS says this is where you establish upgrade support and maximum specifications.
- Confirm the slot count. Look for the number of M.2 PCIe slots and whether one is available. A listed slot may already be occupied, so check the installed-drive configuration as well.
- Confirm the interface. Verify that the laptop accepts the same M.2 PCIe/NVMe type as the drive you are considering. Do not assume that every M.2 drive uses the same interface or that a newer interface will be supported at its full rate.
- Check physical restrictions. Look for the supported M.2 length, single- or double-sided restrictions, retaining-screw position, thermal-cover clearance and any stated capacity limit. If the specification does not state these details, obtain the model-specific service information rather than guessing.
- Determine whether the original drive stays installed. If there is no free slot, an upgrade means cloning or reinstalling Windows and games onto a replacement drive. If there is a free slot, the new drive can normally become a second volume after initialization and formatting.
- Resolve uncertainty before opening the case. Use the exact service instructions or ask an authorized ASUS service center. Regional warranty terms and opening procedures vary, so do not treat a generic teardown video as a guarantee for your machine.
Back up important files before any storage work. An SSD replacement can leave the laptop without a bootable operating system if the original drive is removed before the system has been cloned or reinstalled correctly.
What an internal M.2 NVMe upgrade changes
Advantages for a permanent library
- Fewer connection variables: the drive is attached directly to the laptop’s internal storage interface rather than relying on a cable, enclosure and USB port.
- No occupied external port: your mouse, headset, controller or other accessory can use the available USB connections.
- Better physical security: the game volume is not left on a desk or dangling from a cable that can be pulled accidentally.
- Convenient everyday use: once installed and configured, the library behaves like any other internal Steam library.
- Potentially higher interface capability: example Zephyrus G16 specifications list PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 storage, but that is a model specification, not a measured loading result for every game.
Costs and trade-offs
- The laptop must be opened, or the work must be performed by a service provider.
- You must buy a drive that fits the exact slot and physical layout.
- If the only slot is occupied, migrating the operating system and existing data adds time and creates a backup requirement.
- Opening the chassis can have warranty or service implications that depend on the model and region.
- No current price comparison is established here; compare like-for-like capacity only after compatibility is confirmed.
What an external USB SSD changes
Advantages
- Fastest setup: connect the drive, format it if necessary, and create a library location without opening the laptop.
- Removability: carry the library between compatible computers, subject to the game platform’s account, installation and save-data behavior.
- Lower commitment: useful when you are unsure whether you will keep a game collection on the laptop or when the internal configuration is not documented clearly.
- Simple capacity expansion: an external volume can hold games, installers and other large files without replacing the boot drive.
Limitations
- The drive, cable and port remain part of the setup while a game is running from it.
- It occupies a USB port and adds a separate object that can be misplaced, bumped or unplugged.
- Actual throughput is limited by the slowest component: the SSD controller, enclosure, cable, laptop port or operating-system workload.
- Moving the drive to another computer does not automatically move game saves, launchers or account permissions with it.
- An external enclosure can run warm and may throttle under sustained transfers; the interface label alone does not predict game behavior.
USB speed: what the numbers do—and do not—tell you
ASUS’s ROG Strix Arion S500 manual lists USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C and transfer rates of up to 10 Gbps, with compatibility with USB 3.2 Gen 1 and USB 2.0. ASUS notes that actual performance varies with the device, applications, usage, environment and other factors, and advises using a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port to reach the interface’s high transfer rate.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Example ROG Zephyrus G16 (2026) specifications list USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports up to 10 Gbps and Thunderbolt 4 up to 40 Gbps. Those are port-interface limits, not observed storage benchmarks. A drive connected through a slower port, an unsuitable cable or a hub can operate below the headline value. Conversely, a faster port does not make a modest enclosure or SSD controller deliver that rate.
| Component to check | Question |
|---|---|
| Laptop port | What USB generation and connector does the exact ASUS model provide? |
| Cable | Is the cable rated for the intended USB mode, and does it fit securely? |
| Enclosure or portable SSD | What interface and controller does it actually use? |
| Connection path | Are you using a hub, dock or adapter that may reduce speed or stability? |
| Workload | Are you copying large sequential files or loading many small game assets? |
Do not convert “up to 10 Gbps” or “up to 40 Gbps” into a promised game-loading time. The cited specifications establish interface capability, not a head-to-head test against an internal NVMe drive.
Games, loading and FPS: the realistic performance picture
SSD versus an HDD
ASUS gaming guidance says an SSD offers better read and write speed than an HDD and can improve the gaming experience. That can mean shorter waits for launching a game, loading levels or reading large assets compared with a mechanical hard drive. The same guidance emphasizes that the result also depends on the laptop’s other hardware, software, game requirements and graphics settings.
Internal SSD versus external SSD
No official comparative benchmark in the available material establishes a universal load-time percentage, speed advantage or FPS increase for an internal ASUS NVMe drive over a USB external SSD. Game engines, patches, USB implementations, thermal conditions and background activity all affect the result. An internal drive is the safer default for reliability and consistent access, not a guaranteed frame-rate upgrade.

DirectStorage is not a universal promise
Microsoft describes DirectStorage as a platform capability that lets games use high-speed storage such as NVMe SSDs for reads with minimal CPU overhead. It does not mean every game uses DirectStorage, nor that every ASUS laptop will show a specific benefit after an SSD change. Treat it as a technology that a compatible game and system may use, not as a guaranteed benchmark result.
Using an external SSD with Steam
Create a library on the external drive
- Connect the external SSD directly to the ASUS laptop’s appropriate USB port.
- Open Steam and go to Settings > Storage.
- Choose the option to add a drive or library location, then select the external SSD.
- Install new games to that library, or select an existing game and use Steam’s move command to transfer it.
- Keep the SSD connected and mounted whenever you launch a game installed there.
Steam’s support documentation says it is not recommended to install Steam itself on an external hard drive because of potential performance issues. A separate Steam support page warns that external hard drives can connect or disconnect at inconvenient times during normal operation, producing performance problems or causing installed games to appear uninstalled. Those statements are warnings about external hard-drive setups, not a controlled test of every portable SSD, cable or USB port. They still explain why internal storage is the stronger default for a frequently played library.
Prevent avoidable library errors
- Use the same drive letter or mount point when possible; changing it can make Steam lose track of the library.
- Eject the drive only after Steam and any game using it have closed.
- Do not unplug it while a game is saving, updating or verifying files.
- If Steam reports a game as uninstalled, check that the SSD is connected and that its library folder is selected in Settings > Storage before reinstalling anything.
- Use a direct laptop connection for troubleshooting rather than a hub or dock.
Which option fits your situation?
| Your situation | Better starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You play the same large games every week and the model has a confirmed free M.2 slot | Internal M.2 NVMe SSD | Permanent installation with no cable or occupied USB port |
| You need capacity today and do not want to open the laptop | External USB SSD | Plug-in setup and easy removal |
| You move games between several computers | External USB SSD | Portable library, subject to platform and save-data behavior |
| Your ASUS specification page is unclear | External SSD temporarily, or authorized service advice | Avoid buying an incompatible internal drive |
| The laptop has no free internal slot and you do not want to migrate Windows | External USB SSD | Adds capacity without replacing the boot drive |
| You need the most dependable setup for competitive or frequently launched games | Compatible internal SSD | Removes the external connection and disconnection variables |
Installation planning for an internal drive
Before opening the laptop
- Confirm the exact model and compatible M.2 specification from ASUS.
- Back up documents, game saves and any files that are not already synchronized.
- Decide whether the drive will be a second volume or a replacement for the boot drive.
- Obtain the model-specific service procedure and the correct tools.
- Check whether your regional warranty terms require authorized service.
After the drive is installed
- Start Windows and open Disk Management if the new drive is not yet visible in File Explorer.
- Initialize and format the drive only after confirming that it is the new, empty device; selecting the wrong disk can erase data.
- Assign a clear volume label and create the Steam library location on it.
- Install or move one game first and verify launching, saving and updating before transferring the entire collection.
- Monitor free space and leave room for patches, shader caches and temporary installation files.
If the laptop fails to boot after replacing the original drive, power it down and follow the model’s recovery or cloning procedure. Do not assume that a blank replacement SSD contains a usable operating system.

Common mistakes and fixes
Buying by family name alone
Symptom: the drive does not fit, is not detected or leaves no room for the bottom cover. Fix: return to the complete model number and verify slot dimensions, interface and sidedness before purchase.
Assuming every M.2 slot accepts every M.2 SSD
Symptom: the physical connector appears similar, but the drive is unsupported. Fix: match the interface and supported form factor stated for the exact ASUS model; do not rely on the M.2 label alone.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Expecting more FPS
Symptom: frame rates remain unchanged after moving a game to a faster SSD. Fix: judge the upgrade by capacity, launch and loading behavior. FPS is primarily constrained by the game, CPU, GPU, memory, thermals and graphics settings; the available evidence does not establish an SSD-to-SSD FPS gain.

Comparing interface labels as if they were benchmarks
Symptom: a “40 Gbps” port does not deliver a proportionally faster game experience than a “10 Gbps” connection. Fix: check the entire device chain and treat interface figures as maximum specifications, not observed game performance.
Unplugging an external library
Symptom: Steam reports a game as uninstalled or a game fails during an update. Fix: reconnect the SSD directly, verify the library path in Settings > Storage, close Steam cleanly before disconnecting and test the cable or port if the problem recurs.
Bottom line for ASUS gaming-laptop owners
Start with the exact ASUS model, not the product family. If its specifications confirm a compatible internal M.2 slot or a supported replacement, choose an internal NVMe SSD for a permanent, heavily used game library. It avoids the external cable, port and disconnection risks and is the most dependable everyday arrangement.
