AstroForge is the more direct asteroid-mining bet; TransAstra has a broader portfolio with more possible intermediate services. Neither has demonstrated commercial asteroid mining, profitable extraction, or a proven route to mining revenue. AstroForge has flown a deep-space spacecraft, but its first mission did not complete its stated asteroid-imaging objective and the schedule for its next mission is unclear. TransAstra reports an International Space Station capture demonstration and work on resource processing, but those milestones do not establish asteroid mining or a profitable business. Which looks more promising depends on whether you value focus on asteroid extraction or a wider set of nearer-term space services.

How the companies compare

Question AstroForge TransAstra
Core approach Focused roadmap toward prospecting asteroids and eventually extracting platinum-group metals (PGMs). Portfolio spanning object detection, capture, orbital mobility, debris-related applications, and resource processing.
Most relevant reported milestone Odin launched in February 2025, but did not complete its stated asteroid-imaging objective. The company reports an ISS Capture Bag demonstration in 2025 and a synthetic-material processing demonstration using a one-meter reflector.
Next-step certainty DeepSpace-2 is listed for 2026 on one company page and 2027 on another; the dates are not a verified launch commitment. The reviewed material describes a range of systems and applications, rather than a confirmed asteroid-mining mission schedule.
Publicly described funding evidence SBIR.gov lists two Phase I research awards totaling $424,677. The company news index lists a September 2025 $5 million financing announcement; the index does not establish the terms or funds available.
What the evidence supports A direct mining ambition, a flown spacecraft, and public early-stage R&D support—not successful prospecting or extraction. A broader set of company-reported technologies and demonstrations—not profitable operations or asteroid mining.

These are different kinds of progress, not a like-for-like contest in which a launch or demonstration alone predicts a winner. The available evidence does not establish comparable current cash, revenue, fully committed mission budgets, customer contracts, or profitability for either company.

AstroForge: a direct route to asteroid metals, with substantial mission risk

What the company is trying to do

AstroForge describes itself as a deep-space mining company aiming to extract valuable metals from asteroids, beginning with PGMs. Its About page says the company was founded to let human growth extend beyond the limits of Earth. The company also describes team experience at SpaceX, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Rocket Lab, Virgin Orbit, Virgin Galactic, and Terran Orbital. Those are company-provided descriptions, not an independent assessment of its ability to deliver a mission.

What Odin did—and did not—demonstrate

AstroForge says its 105-kilogram Odin spacecraft launched on February 26, 2025, to image asteroid 2022 OB5. The company’s mission account says Odin passed the Moon and returned a few signals, but also describes communications and ground-station difficulties, along with solar-panel and deployment issues. The company presents the flight as a learning step. It should not be described as a successful asteroid survey: the stated imaging objective was not completed.

Why the next mission date is uncertain

AstroForge’s missions overview lists DeepSpace-2 as launching in 2026, while the mission carousel on its Odin page gives 2027. In February 2025 congressional testimony, the company’s Senior Policy Advisor described a plan for a 2026 landing mission. Together, those dates show an evolving roadmap, not a confirmed launch commitment. Readers should treat the timing as uncertain unless the company provides a current, consistent schedule.

What its public R&D awards establish

SBIR.gov lists two Phase I awards to AstroForge worth $424,677 in total. One is a $275,000 NSF award, tagged 2024, for proposed electromagnetic-ablative PGM refining. The other is a $149,677 NASA award for research into Cold Ablation Drilling and Sampling (CADS), a proposed non-contact laser sampling method incorporating Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS). The NASA award period ran from July 24, 2024, to February 6, 2025. These records establish early-stage public R&D support and project aims; they do not show that the technologies are flight-qualified or have produced mined material.

What the proposed fleet and policy requests mean

In the February 2025 congressional witness document, AstroForge Senior Policy Advisor Steven Place described a plan for three missions followed by a fleet of small autonomous spacecraft to land, mine, refine, and return PGMs. He also advocated for a resource consortium, offtake support, an expansion of Department of Energy loan programs, commercial collaboration with NASA, and access to NASA’s Deep Space Network. These are the company’s roadmap and policy proposals, not evidence that the programs have been approved, that customers have committed to buy material, or that revenue exists.

TransAstra: more potential service paths, but not proof of a mining business

How its portfolio is organized

TransAstra presents its approach as “Detect · Capture · Move · Process.” Sutter TKO is its object-detection and tracking concept; Capture Bag is designed for capture and debris-cleanup applications; Worker Bee with Omnivore is a mobility concept using volatile liquids as propellant; and SolarForge is a concentrated-solar resource-processing concept. This spread offers more possible applications than asteroid extraction alone, but a broad portfolio is not itself proof that any product has paying customers or can be delivered profitably.

Capture Bag and Sutter

TransAstra reports that Capture Bag was demonstrated on the International Space Station in 2025. That is a relevant orbital technology milestone, but it is not evidence of capturing an asteroid or mining one. The company’s Sutter product material describes remote observatories, automation, edge computing, and command-and-control software, and makes comparative performance claims about the system. Those performance claims are TransAstra’s own; the reviewed material does not independently validate them. Object tracking could be a nearer-term service category than asteroid extraction, but the available evidence does not establish a profitable Sutter business.

SolarForge and the limits of its processing claim

TransAstra says SolarForge uses concentrated sunlight, microgravity, and vacuum to process material without consumable chemicals or mechanical drilling. The company reports spallation of synthetic asteroid material using a one-meter reflector. This is a company-reported demonstration using synthetic material, not proof of extracting saleable resources from an asteroid in space.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

TransAstra also advertises “$100B near-term commercial potential.” The reviewed company material supplies no methodology for that figure, so it should be treated as an unverified company estimate, not an independently established market size.

What its financing announcement does—and does not—show

TransAstra’s news index lists a September 23, 2025 announcement headline saying it secured $5 million to scale asteroid-capture technology. The index does not establish whether that figure refers to equity, grants, or another form of financing; what conditions apply; how much remains available; or the value and performance status of any contracts mentioned in other headlines. It is therefore not enough to compare TransAstra’s current financial position with AstroForge’s public research awards.

What would make either company look more ready?

For a company pursuing asteroid mining, the distance between an engineering milestone and commercial extraction is long. A launch can test spacecraft operations without proving that a target can be reached, surveyed, sampled, mined, or processed. A material-processing demonstration can support a technology claim without showing that the process works on an asteroid or yields a product customers will buy. To judge progress, look for evidence at each stage rather than treating a roadmap as a completed capability.

  • Mission execution: a completed flight objective, with a clear account of what hardware operated and what data it returned.
  • Resource evidence: reliable measurements of a target and material collected or processed under relevant conditions.
  • Commercial pathway: identified customers, credible purchase commitments, and a clear explanation of what product or service they would receive.
  • Financing and delivery: disclosed funding terms and mission budgets that can be compared with the work and schedule promised.
  • Independent confirmation: customer, government, or other third-party evidence that corroborates company-reported milestones and performance claims.

The reviewed sources do not provide a comparable industry statistic that predicts asteroid-mining profitability or identifies a likely company winner. No financial winner can be responsibly assigned without comparable financial statements, customer evidence, and independently verified milestones.

Which company is more promising?

If “poised for success” means closest in mission to asteroid extraction, AstroForge is the clearer fit: its plan is concentrated on prospecting and recovering PGMs, and Odin has flown. But Odin did not complete its imaging objective, its next-mission schedule is inconsistent across company materials, and its awards support early-stage research rather than commercial mining.

If the test is whether a company has more kinds of possible services before asteroid mining becomes practical, TransAstra has the broader portfolio. Its reported ISS Capture Bag demonstration and synthetic-material processing work are relevant steps, but neither demonstrates asteroid capture or profitable resource extraction. The available evidence supports different strategic profiles—not a confident prediction of which company will succeed.
