Connect the MixAmp to the computer with Micro USB, connect the A40 headset to the MixAmp’s front headset jack with its inline-mute cable, switch the MixAmp to PC mode, and select the MixAmp Game and Voice devices in Windows. The same guide shows TOSLINK optical running from a PS4 to the MixAmp; it does not show a computer’s optical output connected to the MixAmp.
What “A40 to PC with optical” actually means
The optical connector is on the MixAmp, not on the A40 headset. The headset receives audio and sends microphone signals through its supplied headset cable into the MixAmp’s front 3.5 mm headset port. The MixAmp then receives source audio from another device and handles the game/chat outputs exposed to the computer.

In the official A40 TR + MixAmp Pro TR Gen 4 quick-start guide, those source connections are different for a computer and a PS4:
| Source device | Documented connection to MixAmp | Mode switch | Optical cable shown? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows PC | Micro USB from MixAmp to computer | PC | No PC optical connection is shown |
| Mac | Micro USB from MixAmp to computer | PC | No Mac optical connection is shown |
| PS4 | TOSLINK from PS4 optical output to MixAmp optical input, plus USB | PS4 | Yes |
Therefore, if your goal is to use the A40 on a computer, follow the USB procedure. A TOSLINK cable is relevant to the illustrated console arrangement, but the guide does not establish a PC-to-MixAmp optical setup or certify a particular optical-output adapter.

Ports, cables and switches you need
A40 headset connection
Insert the A40’s inline-mute headset cable into the headset’s 3.5 mm port. Connect the other end to the MixAmp’s front headset port. This is the headset’s required audio and microphone link; it is not an optical connection.
MixAmp-to-computer connection
Use a Micro USB cable: the Micro USB plug goes into the MixAmp Pro TR, and the USB plug goes into the computer. This USB link is the PC/Mac procedure in the quick-start guide and is what exposes the MixAmp Game, Voice and recording devices to the operating system.
Optical input on the MixAmp
The MixAmp includes an optical input, and the guide lists a 3 m TOSLINK optical cable. In the illustrated wiring, that cable runs from the PS4’s optical output to the MixAmp’s optical input. It does not turn the A40 headset itself into an optical headset.

Set the MixAmp’s physical mode switch to PC when it is connected to a computer. Leaving the switch in PS4 mode is a common reason for an apparently connected MixAmp not appearing or not routing audio correctly.

Connect the A40 to a Windows PC over USB
Complete the physical wiring first, then assign the separate playback, communications and recording endpoints. The labels below are the device names given in the official guide.
- Connect the MixAmp. Plug the Micro USB end into the MixAmp Pro TR and the USB end into the Windows computer.
- Connect the headset. Plug the A40 inline-mute cable between the headset’s 3.5 mm socket and the MixAmp’s front headset port. Confirm that the plug is fully seated at both ends.
- Select PC mode. Move the MixAmp PC/PS4 switch to PC.
- Open Windows sound settings. Use the computer’s sound settings to view playback, communications and recording devices. The guide does not tie these instructions to a particular Windows release, so the exact menu wording can vary by version.
- Choose game playback. Set ASTRO MixAmp Pro TR Game as the default playback device. Game audio should then be routed through the MixAmp’s game channel.
- Choose voice playback. Set ASTRO MixAmp Pro TR Voice as the default communications device. Chat applications can use this communications channel separately from game audio.
- Choose the recording endpoint. In recording settings, select ASTRO MixAmp Pro Voice as the default device and as the default communications device. This is the microphone-side assignment specified by the guide.
- Test both channels. Play a game or system sound, then make a short microphone recording or call. Adjust the MixAmp’s game/voice balance only after Windows is using the intended endpoints.
The three assignments are intentional: Game handles ordinary playback, Voice is the communications playback channel, and MixAmp Pro Voice is the recording input. Selecting a generic motherboard output or the headset’s analog jack instead can bypass the MixAmp’s game/chat routing.
What the optical setup in the guide is for
The guide’s optical illustration is a console arrangement, not an alternate PC procedure. Wire it as follows when the source is the illustrated PS4:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Connect the A40 headset to the MixAmp’s front headset port with the inline-mute cable.
- Connect the PS4 optical output to the MixAmp optical input with the TOSLINK cable listed in the guide.
- Connect the MixAmp to the console by USB as shown in the guide.
- Use the appropriate console position on the MixAmp’s mode switch rather than the PC position.
This explains why a TOSLINK cable may be included with the bundle even though the PC instructions use USB. Optical carries the source signal into the MixAmp; it is not the cable between the A40 headset and the MixAmp.

Can a PC be connected to the MixAmp by optical?
Only a computer that actually provides an optical audio output could send a TOSLINK signal directly to the MixAmp’s optical input. A computer without an optical output cannot produce an optical signal merely because the MixAmp has an optical input. The cited guide does not recommend a PC optical-output adapter, name a compatible model, or provide an adapter compatibility matrix.
For that reason, do not treat a USB-to-optical product as an officially verified replacement for the documented PC USB setup. If you are evaluating an adapter, compatibility, driver behavior and whether separate Game and Voice devices remain available would all need to be confirmed for that specific hardware. None of those details is established by the quick-start guide.
When the objective is simply to use the A40 on a PC, USB is the supported, fully specified path: it powers and connects the MixAmp and exposes the separate audio endpoints required for game/chat control.
Windows device assignments at a glance
| Windows role | Device name from the guide | What it is used for |
|---|---|---|
| Default playback | ASTRO MixAmp Pro TR Game | Game and other ordinary system audio |
| Default communications playback | ASTRO MixAmp Pro TR Voice | Chat and communications audio |
| Default recording | ASTRO MixAmp Pro Voice | Microphone input from the A40 through the MixAmp |
| Default communications recording | ASTRO MixAmp Pro Voice | Microphone input used by communications applications |
Applications can still have their own audio-device selectors. If a particular game or chat program ignores Windows defaults, check that program’s audio settings and assign the same Game, Voice or MixAmp Pro Voice endpoint there.

Mac connection and the guide’s limitation
The Mac procedure is also USB-based: connect the MixAmp to the Mac by Micro USB, connect the A40 to the front headset port, and use PC mode. In the guide’s Mac section, the user opens Sound settings, chooses Output, and selects Digital Output.
The source does not provide current-version macOS menu names or a version-specific troubleshooting path. Apple has changed the layout and labels of Sound settings across macOS releases, so use the current Sound pane on your Mac and look for the output choice identified by the guide. Do not infer from the presence of “Digital Output” that a separate Mac TOSLINK cable is required; the documented computer connection remains Micro USB.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The MixAmp is not listed in Windows
- Verify that the Micro USB plug is inserted into the MixAmp rather than into another peripheral.
- Check the USB connection at the computer end and try another USB port if the computer does not detect it.
- Confirm that the mode switch is set to PC.
- Reopen the sound settings after reconnecting so the device list refreshes.
You hear no game audio
- Set ASTRO MixAmp Pro TR Game as the default playback device.
- Check the A40 cable at both the headset and the MixAmp front port.
- Raise the MixAmp volume and make sure its game/voice balance has not been turned fully toward voice.
- Check the game’s own audio-device setting if Windows is configured correctly but that game remains silent.
Chat audio is missing or too quiet
- Set ASTRO MixAmp Pro TR Voice as the default communications device.
- In the chat application, choose the Voice endpoint explicitly if it has separate input and output selectors.
- Use the MixAmp’s balance control to move the mix toward voice, then test again.
Other people cannot hear you
- Set ASTRO MixAmp Pro Voice as both the default recording device and default communications device.
- Confirm that the inline mute switch on the A40 cable is not engaged.
- Check that the headset plug is completely seated in the MixAmp’s front port.
- Verify the chat application is using MixAmp Pro Voice rather than a laptop microphone or another input.
An optical cable is connected, but the PC still has no sound
- Identify the source of the optical signal. The guide’s optical example uses a PS4 optical output, not a PC.
- Check whether the computer has a real optical output. A MixAmp optical input cannot create an output on a computer that lacks one.
- For a normal PC setup, remove the optical assumption and connect the MixAmp by Micro USB, then assign the Game, Voice and MixAmp Pro Voice devices.
The headset works but game/chat mixing is unavailable
This usually indicates that the computer is using a single analog output instead of the MixAmp’s USB endpoints. Recheck the default playback, communications and recording assignments. The separate Game and Voice devices are what allow the MixAmp’s game/chat balance controls to operate as intended.

Pre-connection checklist
- ASTRO A40 TR headset with its inline-mute cable
- MixAmp Pro TR Gen 4 with an optical input
- Micro USB cable for the computer connection
- Computer running Windows or macOS
- TOSLINK cable only if you are wiring the documented optical console arrangement
- MixAmp mode switch set to PC for computer use
- Windows assignments ready: Game playback, Voice communications playback and MixAmp Pro Voice recording
Important limits of the documented procedure
The evidence here is the official quick-start guide for the A40 TR and MixAmp Pro TR Gen 4 bundle. Its extracted instructions come from a Japanese-language PDF. They establish the physical wiring and device names above, but they do not establish current product availability, firmware requirements, current Windows or macOS interface labels, or compatibility for third-party optical-output adapters.
If your hardware differs from the A40 TR plus MixAmp Pro TR Gen 4 combination, port names and behavior may not match these instructions. Confirm the exact MixAmp generation and the ports on your unit before buying cables or an adapter. For the documented PC configuration, however, the practical answer is straightforward: use Micro USB to the MixAmp, connect the A40 to the MixAmp’s front jack, select PC mode, and assign the named Game, Voice and recording devices.
