Asteroid Bombardment of Early Earth May Have Created Building Blocks of Life

Asteroids may have helped stock early Earth with prebiotic ingredients in two ways: carrying organic compounds formed in small bodies, and producing organic precursors during impacts. Returned samples and laboratory experiments support both possibilities, but they do not show that asteroids brought life to Earth or explain how life began.

What the Bennu sample reveals

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft returned 121.6 grams of material from asteroid Bennu in September 2023. Analyses reported amino acids, amines, formaldehyde, carboxylic acids, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, nitrogen-containing heterocycles and all five nucleobases found in DNA and RNA. One 2025 study reported 14 of the 20 amino acids used in terrestrial biology and roughly 10,000 nitrogen-bearing chemical species in the sample. These are chemical ingredients associated with life, not organisms. The Bennu sample study; the 2025 Nature Astronomy report; NASA’s 2024 sample account.

Why a returned sample matters

Scientists can analyze returned material under controlled conditions, rather than infer its full chemistry from remote sensing or study only meteorites that have passed through Earth’s atmosphere and contacted its surface. Bennu therefore shows that diverse prebiotic compounds existed in an asteroid’s parent-body setting. That makes delivery to early Earth plausible, but the sample does not document a delivery event.

What phosphate adds—and what it does not

NASA’s 2024 account also reported carbon, nitrogen, organic compounds and magnesium-sodium phosphate. NASA described the phosphate as water-soluble and relevant to the biochemistry of known life; the mineral assemblage hints at a watery history for Bennu or its parent body. OSIRIS-REx principal investigator Dante Lauretta said the findings “suggest a watery past for the asteroid,” and that Bennu “potentially could have once been part of a wetter world,” while emphasizing that this hypothesis requires further investigation. Phosphate is not evidence that life existed on Bennu.

What Ryugu suggests about water and freeze-thaw cycles

A separate line of evidence comes from a millimetre-sized sample of asteroid Ryugu. In a 2024 summary of a Nature Astronomy study, Imperial College London reported that researchers used X-ray computed tomography to examine fractures and mineral veins in the sample. They interpreted its curved, cusp-like fractures as consistent with ice-driven freeze-thaw alteration and water movement. Imperial College London’s summary.

The proposed chain has several steps: the observed features support an interpretation of freeze-thaw alteration; that process suggests water interacted with asteroid minerals; and the resulting material may have included organic matter, clay, sulfide minerals and water. Those ingredients could, in turn, have been delivered to Earth by impacts. The sample features are observations; the alteration process and eventual delivery are interpretations and implications, not a recorded transfer to Earth. Study lead Matthew Genge said repeated melting and freezing of asteroid ice “may have helped life form on Earth”—a proposed implication, not a direct observation of life forming.

Impacts may also have made organic precursors

Delivery is not the only proposed mechanism. In hypervelocity-impact simulations reported in a 2025 study, carbonate-bearing starting materials produced cyanide ions (CN−) and other organic precursor molecules. A 2023 study reported synthesis of prebiotic organics from carbon dioxide (CO2) catalyzed by meteoritic and volcanic particles. Together, these experiments support the possibility that impacts could drive useful chemistry as well as transport material formed earlier. Laboratory production under experimental conditions does not establish how representative those conditions were of early Earth, or how much of any resulting compound would have remained available after an actual impact. The studies do not quantify the net amount of useful material produced or preserved on the early planet.

How the two proposed pathways fit together

Pathway Evidence described here What remains unresolved
Delivery Bennu contains diverse organic compounds; Ryugu sample features are consistent with proposed water-driven alteration. How much material reached early Earth, survived impact and accumulated there.
Impact synthesis Experiments produced organic precursors from suitable starting materials during simulated impacts, and another study synthesized prebiotic organics from CO2 using meteoritic and volcanic particles. How representative the experiments were of early-Earth conditions and how much useful material was produced or preserved.

These pathways are compatible, not competing explanations: material made or altered in small bodies could have arrived alongside compounds generated by impact chemistry. The available studies do not establish the relative contribution of asteroid inputs and chemistry occurring on Earth, or whether asteroid bombardment was necessary or sufficient for life’s origin.
