Astell & Kern PD5 vs. SR35: Which Portable Music Player Should You Buy?

Choose the Astell & Kern SR35 if pocketability or a 2.5mm balanced cable is your priority. Choose the newer PD5 if you want more output headroom, switchable Quad/Octa DAC operation and the longer battery figure advertised by its manufacturer. Both players have 64GB of internal storage, microSD expansion, 3.5mm and 4.4mm outputs, and Bluetooth support. The practical decision is therefore less about a simple “newer is better” verdict and more about your headphones, carrying habits and how you interpret the battery and sound claims.

PD5 vs. SR35 at a glance

The PD5 is the more ambitious design on paper, while the SR35 remains the easier player to carry. The table uses Astell & Kern’s official product specifications; output figures are manufacturer ratings measured with no load unless noted otherwise.

Which one should you buy?

Buy the SR35 for maximum portability

The SR35 measures 64 × 108.3 × 16.1mm and weighs about 184g. That is 5.7mm narrower, 11.4mm shorter and approximately 14g lighter than the PD5, while thickness is identical. Those differences are modest on a desk but noticeable when the player shares a small pocket with a phone, keys or a camera. If you walk, commute or travel with the player every day, the SR35’s reduced footprint is its clearest advantage.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Buy the SR35 if your cable terminates in 2.5mm balanced

The SR35 has three headphone connections: 3.5mm unbalanced, 2.5mm balanced and 4.4mm balanced. The PD5 has 3.5mm unbalanced and 4.4mm balanced, but no 2.5mm socket. A 2.5mm balanced cable therefore works directly with the SR35 and needs a properly wired replacement cable or an appropriate adapter for the PD5. Do not use a mechanically incompatible adapter or force a plug into a different socket; check the connector standard used by your headphones before ordering either player.

Buy the PD5 for output headroom and configurable DAC operation

The PD5 uses eight CS43198 DACs and lets you select Quad or Octa operation. Its listed maximum output is 3Vrms unbalanced and 6Vrms balanced in Quad mode, rising to 4Vrms unbalanced and 8Vrms balanced in Octa mode. The SR35 uses four CS43198 DACs in Quad mode and lists 2.1Vrms unbalanced and 4Vrms balanced on normal gain, or 3.1Vrms and 6Vrms on high gain.

Those numbers can matter with headphones that need more voltage, or when you want additional volume range without running an output near its limit. They do not, by themselves, establish lower distortion, a different tonal balance or an audible improvement for every listener. Headphone sensitivity, impedance, recording level and your preferred listening volume determine whether the extra headroom is useful.

Understanding the PD5’s Quad and Octa modes

What changes on paper

In Quad mode, the PD5’s specification uses four of its eight CS43198 DACs. Octa mode uses all eight and carries the higher listed output ratings. The SR35 has a four-DAC Quad arrangement without an equivalent eight-DAC setting. This gives the PD5 a hardware option the older player does not provide.

What the specification does not prove

A larger DAC count is not a guarantee of a perceptible improvement. Implementation, analog output design, power supply behavior, firmware and the connected headphones all influence the result. Treat Quad/Octa selection as a capability and output-setting choice rather than a promise that Octa mode will sound better with every track or headphone.

How to decide whether it matters to you

  • If your headphones already reach your normal listening level comfortably from the SR35, the PD5’s higher rating may provide little practical benefit.
  • If you use demanding over-ear headphones and regularly approach the top of the SR35’s volume range, the PD5’s additional listed voltage is more relevant.
  • If you mainly use sensitive in-ear monitors, maximum output is less likely to be the deciding factor; connector fit and low-volume control matter more.
  • If you want to experiment, compare the PD5’s Quad and Octa settings at matched listening levels. A louder setting can seem better even when the underlying difference is small.

Headphone and cable compatibility

3.5mm unbalanced

Both players provide a 3.5mm output, so conventional single-ended headphones and earphones do not require a new cable. This is the simplest option when you share headphones between devices or use a portable headset with a standard plug.

4.4mm balanced

Both models also provide a 4.4mm balanced output. If your cable already uses 4.4mm, connector compatibility is equal. Balanced output ratings are higher on both players than their unbalanced ratings, but balanced wiring is not automatically a sound-quality upgrade; it is a different electrical connection that may provide more output power or better channel separation depending on the design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2.5mm balanced

Only the SR35 includes a 2.5mm balanced socket. This is the deciding hardware detail for anyone whose existing cable is permanently terminated in 2.5mm. The PD5’s lack of that port does not make it incompatible with the headphones themselves, but it can add the cost and inconvenience of changing the cable. Confirm whether a cable is truly balanced and wired for the intended player before using an adapter.

Storage for a local music library

Internal capacity

Both players include 64GB of onboard storage. The usable space will be lower after the operating system and installed data occupy part of it, so a 64GB specification should not be read as 64GB available for music.

microSD expansion

Astell & Kern lists support for cards up to 1TB in the SR35 and up to 1.5TB in the PD5. That difference favors the PD5 if you keep a large lossless or high-resolution library locally. It does not mean every card of those capacities will deliver identical performance; verify the player’s current card requirements and format guidance before buying a card.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Choosing capacity based on your library

  • A smaller collection can fit in internal storage plus a modest expansion card, making capacity parity between the players effectively irrelevant.
  • A library built from lossless, high-resolution or multichannel files consumes space quickly, so the PD5’s stated 1.5TB ceiling offers more room before you need to reorganize files.
  • Storage capacity does not affect the players’ headphone output or DAC mode. Choose the card size for your library, not as a substitute for a performance upgrade.

Battery life: 28 hours versus 20 hours is not a laboratory comparison

The PD5 product page advertises up to 28 hours of continuous playback. The SR35 page states about 20 hours under a specific setup: FLAC files at 16-bit/44.1kHz, normal gain, unbalanced output, volume 50, display off and dual-DAC mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Equivalent test conditions are not disclosed for the PD5 figure in the available product-page material. The two numbers therefore show a difference between manufacturer claims, not a controlled comparison proving that the PD5 will last exactly eight hours longer in your use. High-resolution files, balanced output, high gain, wireless connections, screen brightness and network activity can all change endurance.

Use the figures directionally. The PD5 has the more favorable advertised ceiling, while the SR35 has a more detailed qualification for its approximately 20-hour claim. If charging opportunities are scarce, consider your actual playback mode rather than relying on the headline number.

Wireless features and codec differences

The PD5 lists Bluetooth 5.3 with aptX HD, LDAC, LHDC, SBC and AAC. The SR35 lists Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX HD and LDAC. This gives the PD5 broader stated codec support and newer Bluetooth hardware.

Codec availability depends on the transmitter, receiving device, operating system and selected settings. A codec listed on the player does not guarantee that a particular phone, wireless headphone or speaker will negotiate it. If you plan to use Bluetooth regularly, check the codec support on both ends of your setup; otherwise, the wired outputs remain the more predictable way to use either player.

What independent listening evidence says

What Hi-Fi’s review, published October 7, 2026, describes the PD5 as a clear step up from the SR35 after the publication’s listening period. The reviewers used several wired headphones and reported handling, interface and listening impressions.

That is a subjective editorial assessment, not a controlled measurement and not a guarantee for every headphone, recording or listener. It is useful context when combined with the specifications, but it should not be converted into the claim that eight DACs always sound better than four. Your own system may place more weight on size, connector fit or output requirements than on the reviewer’s preference.

A decision framework for common buyers

For commuters and frequent travelers

Start with the SR35. Its 184g weight and smaller dimensions make it the less intrusive carry. Choose the PD5 instead if you are willing to accept the larger chassis in exchange for its higher listed output or longer advertised battery ceiling.

For owners of 2.5mm balanced cables

Choose the SR35 unless you are already planning to replace or reterminate the cable. It is the only model in this comparison with a 2.5mm balanced output, while still offering the 3.5mm and 4.4mm connections shared by the PD5.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For demanding full-size headphones

Lean toward the PD5 if your headphones need substantial voltage or you want more volume reserve. Compare the stated ratings with your headphone’s sensitivity and impedance rather than assuming the DAC count determines suitability. The SR35 may still be sufficient if it reaches your normal level without operating near maximum volume.

For a very large offline library

The PD5 has the higher listed microSD ceiling at 1.5TB, compared with 1TB for the SR35. Both start with 64GB internal storage, so the expansion limit is the meaningful distinction for long-term library growth.

For Bluetooth listening

The PD5 lists Bluetooth 5.3 and five codecs, including LHDC and AAC, while the SR35 lists Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX HD and LDAC. Select the model whose listed codec set matches the transmitter and headphones you actually use; a theoretical codec advantage is irrelevant if the other device cannot support it.

Buying checklist

  1. Identify your headphone plug. Mark whether you use 3.5mm, 4.4mm or 2.5mm balanced. A 2.5mm requirement points to the SR35 unless you will change cables.
  2. Estimate your required output. Check your headphones’ sensitivity and impedance, then decide whether the PD5’s higher listed voltage would provide useful reserve.
  3. Measure your carry constraints. Compare the published dimensions and weights with the pocket, case or bag you intend to use.
  4. Count your library. Both provide 64GB internally; choose between the 1TB SR35 ceiling and 1.5TB PD5 ceiling according to your expected collection.
  5. Set realistic battery expectations. Treat 28 hours and 20 hours as differently qualified manufacturer claims, not guaranteed everyday runtimes.
  6. Check Bluetooth compatibility. Match the player’s listed codecs with your phone, computer, headphones or speaker.
  7. Separate specifications from sound judgments. Use the What Hi-Fi review as one listening opinion, then prioritize the physical and electrical requirements that are certain for your setup.

What is not established by the available specifications

Current street prices, regional stock, retailer policies, firmware changes, supported streaming applications, long-term reliability and independently controlled PD5-versus-SR35 measurements are not established here. Those details can change by market or software version and should be verified at the time and place you intend to buy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

The SR35 is the sensible choice when a smaller, lighter player or a native 2.5mm balanced output matters most. The PD5 is the more capable successor on paper, with switchable Quad/Octa DAC operation, higher listed output, broader stated Bluetooth codec support, a 1.5TB microSD ceiling and an advertised battery figure of up to 28 hours. Pick the PD5 for those capabilities; pick the SR35 when portability and connector compatibility outweigh them.
