Short answer: The Astell&Kern PD5 is a portable player for local files, network playback and wired or Bluetooth listening. It handles WAV, FLAC, WMA, MP3, OGG, APE, AAC, ALAC, AIFF, DFF and DSF; PCM up to 32-bit/384 kHz; and native stereo DSD256. It has 64 GB of internal storage, a microSD slot rated up to 1.5 TB, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.3, USB-C, 3.5 mm unbalanced and 4.4 mm balanced outputs.
Streaming-service support needs more qualification. A review dated October 7, 2026 reports that Tidal, Qobuz, Amazon Music, Deezer and Apple Music can be downloaded through Google Play. Astell&Kern separately lists Qobuz Connect and Roon Ready support. App availability can vary by country, firmware and service policy.

Lossless, compressed and DSD files
The model-specific format list covers common lossless files such as FLAC, ALAC, WAV and AIFF, plus DSD files in DFF and DSF containers. It also lists WMA, MP3, OGG, APE and AAC. That combination lets you move an existing library to the player without converting it merely because it uses a different mainstream container.

Container support is not the same as unlimited support for every possible encoding variant. Sampling rate, bit depth, stereo or multichannel layout, and the application used to open a file can affect playback. If a file fails, test a standard stereo version in a listed format before assuming the hardware is incompatible.
PCM limits
Astell&Kern specifies PCM from 8 kHz through 384 kHz at 8, 16, 24 or 32 bits per sample. Its decoding specification separately describes bit-to-bit playback up to 32-bit/384 kHz. A 32-bit/384 kHz file therefore sits at the stated ceiling; the specification does not imply that a higher-rate file will be downsampled successfully or played at all.
Native DSD256
The PD5 is specified for native stereo DSD64 at 2.8 MHz, DSD128 at 5.6 MHz and DSD256 at 11.2 MHz. That answers the common “can it play DSD256?” question: yes, for stereo DSD256 files within the supported path. Native DSD support does not mean every streaming application delivers DSD, and it does not cover multichannel material unless a separate application specification says so.
Optional Digital Audio Remaster processing
Digital Audio Remaster (DAR) is selectable processing, not a change to the source file. The player describes conversion of 44.1 kHz-family PCM to as much as 352.8 kHz and 48 kHz-family PCM to as much as 384 kHz. It also states that PCM below 192 kHz can be converted to DSD128, while DSD tracks are played without conversion. Turn DAR off when you want the least additional processing; use it as an optional listening mode rather than as evidence that a low-resolution file has become a high-resolution master.
ReplayGain
ReplayGain is specified for tracks up to 24-bit/192 kHz. It can help keep album or track levels more consistent, but files above that stated range should not be assumed to receive the same gain processing.
Streaming apps and network playback
Apps reported as downloadable
In its October 7, 2026 PD5 review, What Hi-Fi? wrote: “Dual-band wi-fi (2.4/5GHz) grants solid network stability, and you can download popular streaming service apps such as Tidal, Qobuz, Amazon Music, Deezer and Apple Music from the Google Play Store.” This is a dated report of app availability, not a permanent worldwide compatibility promise. Google Play availability, login requirements, DRM behavior and minimum app versions can change by region and firmware.

Qobuz Connect
Astell&Kern lists Qobuz Connect. In this mode, the Qobuz app acts as the controller while the PD5 receives playback over the same network. The phone or tablet is not simply sending Bluetooth audio; it is selecting the network player. For reliable operation, sign in to Qobuz, connect the PD5 and controller to the same Wi-Fi network, open the device picker in the Qobuz app and choose the PD5.
Roon Ready
The manufacturer identifies the PD5 as Roon Ready, and Roon Labs’ September 2026 announcement also names it. Roon Ready is a network-player integration: playback is managed by a Roon system and delivered to the PD5. It is different from installing a music-service application directly on the player, and it requires a Roon setup that can discover the device on the local network.
Basic network setup
- Open the PD5’s network settings and join a 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi network.
- For a direct service app, open Google Play, sign in, install the service and complete its own account and download settings.
- For Qobuz Connect, leave the PD5 and the controlling phone or tablet on the same network, then select the PD5 inside Qobuz.
- For Roon, enable the PD5 as an output in Roon’s audio-zone or device settings after it appears on the network.
If a device does not appear, temporarily disable guest-network isolation, verify that both devices received addresses from the same router and check whether a firmware or app update changed discovery behavior.
Wired headphone connections
3.5 mm versus 4.4 mm
The PD5 provides a conventional 3.5 mm unbalanced output and a 4.4 mm balanced output. The product page specifies 5-pole support for the balanced socket. Check the termination of a cable before buying an adapter: a cable intended for a different balanced wiring standard can be unsafe or simply fail to produce the expected channels.
| DAC mode | 3.5 mm unbalanced | 4.4 mm balanced |
|---|---|---|
| Quad-DAC, no load | 3 Vrms maximum listed | 6 Vrms maximum listed |
| Octa-DAC, no load | 4 Vrms maximum listed | 8 Vrms maximum listed |
Those are no-load output specifications. They do not predict the loudness, noise floor or frequency response you will obtain with a particular headphone, nor do they prove that a difficult headphone is optimally driven. Use the connection that matches your cable and listening level rather than choosing a socket solely because its voltage number is higher.

Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and USB-C
Bluetooth transmission and reception
Bluetooth 5.3 is listed with A2DP and AVRCP profiles. The stated codec set is aptX HD, LDAC, LHDC, SBC and AAC. The available codec is negotiated with the receiving device; both ends must support a codec before it can be used.
The PD5 also has a BT Sink function. Sink mode means the player receives Bluetooth audio from another device, such as a phone. That is separate from the normal case in which the PD5 sends audio to Bluetooth headphones or a speaker. Choose the mode deliberately when pairing, because a successful Bluetooth connection can still be the wrong direction for your intended use.
Dual-band Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz supports network streaming, Qobuz Connect and Roon Ready operation. A 5 GHz connection can reduce congestion at short range, while 2.4 GHz generally travels farther through walls. Neither band guarantees a particular streaming quality; the router, signal strength and network traffic still matter.

USB-C is specified for charging and PC/Mac connection. Astell&Kern also provides a separate PD5 USB audio driver download. Consult the current manual and your operating system’s support information before treating the player as a desktop USB DAC. Use a data-capable USB-C cable, select the PD5 as the computer’s audio output and install the driver only if your platform requires it.
Storage for a local music library
The player includes 64 GB of internal storage and one microSD slot rated for cards up to 1.5 TB. A card is useful for a large FLAC or DSD library, offline downloads and keeping the internal storage available for applications.
- Choose a reputable microSD card within the stated capacity limit.
- Back up the card before moving a large library.
- Insert it with the PD5 powered down or following the player’s safe-removal guidance.
- Let the library scan finish before judging whether files are missing.
- Organize folders and tags consistently; embedded artist, album and track metadata determine how easily the library can be browsed.
Capacity is not the same as usable free space: the operating system and installed applications consume part of the advertised storage. Keep a separate backup because a portable player or card is not a backup strategy by itself.

Battery life and charging
Astell&Kern quotes about 28 hours of FLAC playback under a specific test condition: 16-bit/44.1 kHz files, volume 50, Quad-DAC mode and the LCD switched off. That figure should be used as a reference point, not as a universal runtime. Screen use, high-output modes, wireless networking, Bluetooth, DSD and demanding headphones can change endurance.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which connection should you use?
For the simplest local playback
Copy supported files to internal storage or a microSD card, connect wired headphones and leave network radios off when they are not needed. This minimizes setup and usually reduces battery use compared with streaming.
For a phone-controlled Qobuz system
Use Qobuz Connect over the same Wi-Fi network. It keeps control in the Qobuz app while the PD5 acts as the network endpoint, avoiding a Bluetooth link between the phone and player.
For a Roon library
Use the Roon Ready endpoint when the PD5 and Roon system are on the same network. This is the appropriate path for Roon’s library, zones and playback controls, not a substitute for installing a streaming app.

Common problems and fixes
A streaming app is missing
Check the Google Play listing while signed into the intended regional account, confirm the PD5 firmware is current and verify that the service supports the device in your country. The October 7, 2026 app report is evidence of availability at that time, not a guarantee for every later software build.
Qobuz Connect or Roon cannot find the player
Confirm both devices are on the same non-isolated network, disable VPNs temporarily, restart the router and player, and check whether a guest SSID is blocking device discovery. Wired Ethernet for the Roon computer and Wi-Fi for the PD5 can still work if both are on the same local network.
Recommended Free Tools
No sound from the balanced socket
Verify that the plug is a compatible 4.4 mm, 5-pole balanced termination and that the headphones are not wired for a different standard. Test the same headphones from the 3.5 mm output to separate a cable issue from a player or file issue.
Bluetooth connects in the wrong direction
Check whether BT Sink is enabled. Sink mode receives audio from another Bluetooth source; ordinary headphone use requires the PD5 to transmit to the headphones.
A high-resolution file will not play
Confirm the extension is one of the listed formats, check the file’s channel layout and resolution against the PCM or DSD limits, and test a standard stereo FLAC. If the standard file works, the failure is more likely to be the original encoding or application path than the basic format list.
What these specifications cannot establish
Format ceilings, output voltage and wireless codec names do not measure sound quality. They do not show how a particular headphone sounds, whether a recording is mastered well or whether a streaming service delivers the same resolution as a local file. Use the specifications to establish compatibility and connection choices; evaluate sound with your own headphones, recordings and listening levels.
Bottom line
The PD5 is a flexible portable source: it covers the major lossless and compressed formats, reaches 32-bit/384 kHz PCM and native stereo DSD256, offers expandable storage, and provides wired, Bluetooth and network routes. Treat streaming-service lists as time- and region-dependent, use Qobuz Connect or Roon Ready when those ecosystems match your setup, and verify the 4.4 mm cable wiring before buying balanced accessories.
