Verdict: The Astell&Kern PD5 is a premium portable player for listeners who use revealing wired headphones and want a clean, highly detailed presentation, substantial balanced output, local-library storage and full streaming flexibility. Its Quad-DAC mode favors long trips, while Octa-DAC mode delivers more drive and expression at the cost of battery life. At £899/$1049/AU$1399, it is difficult to justify for wireless-only listening or anyone who expects smartphone-fast software.
What the Astell&Kern PD5 is
The PD5 is a compact, silver-aluminium digital audio player built around eight Cirrus Logic CS43198 DACs. It runs an Android-based interface, plays files from internal or removable storage, streams over dual-band Wi‑Fi and can operate as a USB DAC for a computer. A 4.1-inch, 720×1280 touchscreen, a USB-C port, Bluetooth 5.3 and separate 3.5mm and 4.4mm headphone outputs cover the main use cases for a modern dedicated player.

The specification supports PCM up to 32-bit/384kHz and native DSD256. The player has 64GB of internal storage and accepts a microSD card up to 1.5TB, according to the 2026 independent review. That combination is aimed at people with a substantial local music library, not just listeners who occasionally stream an album.

How the PD5 sounds
What Hi‑Fi?’s 2026 listening assessment found the PD5 clearer and more detailed than the outgoing SR35. The reviewer described an expansive, uncluttered soundstage, sharply outlined instrumental textures, natural dynamics and strong separation when arrangements became dense. Those are critical listening impressions rather than laboratory measurements; no independent frequency-response, distortion or standardized battery test figures were published with the review.
Detail and texture
On Agnes Obel’s “Fuel To Fire,” the review highlighted the way the player exposes low-level detail without making the presentation feel congested. Instruments occupy distinct positions, and small textural cues remain audible when the mix becomes busy. This character suits acoustic recordings, chamber music and well-produced vocal tracks where room information and decay are part of the experience.
Stage and separation
Radiohead’s “Reckoner” was used to illustrate cohesive three-dimensional organization. Rather than presenting a collection of isolated left-and-right effects, the PD5 keeps the parts arranged as a unified space. That distinction matters with complex electronic layers and live recordings, where a wide image is useful only if timing and placement remain intelligible.

Dynamics and dense mixes
The review found convincing separation in Slipknot’s “Left Behind,” a useful stress case for guitars, drums and vocals competing for attention. Massive Attack’s “Atlas Air” demonstrated controlled large-scale dynamics, while a DSD64 version of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” showed that the player could remain composed through rhythmic bass and percussion transients. These examples describe the reviewer’s system and headphones, so they should be treated as a listening reference rather than a promise that every headphone will sound identical.
The review team summarized the result as “unquestionably clearer and more detailed than its predecessor,” with an expansive soundscape and sharply drawn textures. In practical terms, the PD5’s appeal is refinement and control rather than an artificially bright “detail boost.”

Quad-DAC versus Octa-DAC mode
Quad-DAC and Octa-DAC are not different file formats or streaming tiers. They are two operating modes that allocate the player’s eight DAC chips differently. Quad-DAC uses four chips to reduce power consumption and is voiced by Astell&Kern as natural and smooth. Octa-DAC engages all eight for maximum performance and higher balanced output.
| Mode | Balanced output | Published battery figure | Listening character and best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quad-DAC | 6Vrms | Up to 28 hours | Smoother, efficient operation for travel, commuting and long sessions |
| Octa-DAC | 8Vrms | About 15 hours in the 2026 review | Punchier, more expressive presentation for demanding headphones and critical listening |
The 28-hour figure is Astell&Kern’s quoted maximum for Quad-DAC. The roughly 15-hour Octa-DAC result comes from What Hi‑Fi?’s usage report, not a standardized laboratory protocol. Screen brightness, wireless radios, volume, file type and headphone load can all change runtime.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choosing a mode
- Use Quad-DAC when you are away from a charger, listening to efficient in-ear monitors or prefer the gentler presentation.
- Use Octa-DAC when a full-size headphone needs more voltage or when you want the strongest dynamics and output headroom.
- Switch between them rather than treating Octa-DAC as automatically superior. The audible difference depends on the headphones, recording and your listening level.
4.4mm balanced output and headphone matching
The PD5 provides both a conventional 3.5mm unbalanced jack and a 4.4mm balanced jack. Balanced does not make every headphone sound better by itself; its practical advantages here are the higher available output and compatibility with headphones supplied with a 4.4mm cable. In Octa-DAC mode, the balanced specification rises to 8Vrms, while Quad-DAC is rated at 6Vrms.
Headphone enthusiasts with power-hungry over-ear models are the clearest target. Efficient in-ear monitors may not need the extra voltage, and some sensitive models can expose hiss or make volume adjustment less convenient. Start at low volume, confirm that the plug and wiring are correct, and never use a balanced cable with an adapter that ties the channels together.
Because the PD5’s strongest results were obtained with wired headphones, buyers should regard Bluetooth as a convenience feature rather than the reason to purchase the player. Bluetooth 5.3 is reported stable and supports LDAC, LHDC, aptX HD, SBC and AAC, but a wireless link bypasses much of the benefit of investing in a high-output dedicated player.

Streaming, local files and USB DAC use
Streaming services
Dual-band Wi‑Fi enables network playback and Roon Ready integration. What Hi‑Fi? reports that Tidal, Qobuz, Amazon Music, Deezer and Apple Music can be installed through Google Play. The official UK listing also identifies Qobuz Connect. App availability, sign-in behavior and regional catalogs are controlled by each service, so confirm support in your country before buying.
Local-library playback
The internal 64GB is enough for a curated collection, but high-resolution albums consume space quickly. A microSD card rated up to 1.5TB gives the PD5 a practical role as a permanent library player. Format the card in a compatible file system, copy music into a clear folder structure and allow the player’s library scan to finish before judging whether an album is missing.
USB-C DAC mode
Connect the PD5 to a laptop with a USB-C cable and select USB DAC mode on the player. The computer then sends audio to the PD5, which performs the conversion through its internal Octa-DAC architecture. This is useful at a desk because one device can serve as both a portable player and a computer headphone interface. The computer’s output selection and application volume controls still matter; select the PD5 as the active audio device before troubleshooting the player.
Processing and sound-shaping features
EnviroTune
EnviroTune uses the built-in microphone to analyze ambient noise by frequency band and compensate for frequencies masked by the environment. The aim is to improve audibility without simply raising overall volume, and Astell&Kern states support for PCM up to 24-bit/192kHz while this processing is active. What Hi‑Fi? reported that it retained the PD5’s core character in use. In a quiet room, leave it off if you want the unprocessed signal.
Digital Audio Remaster
Digital Audio Remaster (DAR) offers selectable upsampling. It can convert 44.1kHz-family PCM to 352.8kHz, 48kHz-family PCM to 384kHz, and PCM below 192kHz to DSD128. Upsampling does not restore information absent from the original recording; it changes the conversion workload and can alter the sound or battery demand. Compare it with DAR disabled and keep the setting that suits your library.

Filters and equalization
Four DAC filters, a 10-band equalizer, a graph-based advanced EQ, crossfeed and ReplayGain provide unusually broad control. The review favored the natural “Low Latency Slow” filter for most testing. Crossfeed can make hard-panned material feel less fatiguing on headphones, while ReplayGain helps normalize album-to-album level differences without manually changing volume. Save a neutral profile before experimenting so you can return to a known baseline.
Design, portability and interface
At approximately 198g, the PD5 is pocketable but not featherweight. Its curved body and 4.1-inch display are intended for one-handed use, and the physical controls were considered logical and uncluttered in the review. The edge-free design looks clean, although the reviewer found it slightly less dense and less premium in hand than the SR35.
The main compromise is software speed. The Android-based interface works, but it is not as fast or slick as a current smartphone. Library indexing and app navigation can feel deliberate, especially with a large card. The reflective screen can also be difficult to read outdoors. If you frequently change playlists in bright sunlight, a phone remains more convenient; if you mostly start an album and listen, the limitation is easier to accept.
First-use setup
- Charge the player fully with the supplied USB-C-to-USB-C cable before evaluating battery behavior.
- Connect to Wi‑Fi through the network settings, then install firmware and Google Play app updates that are offered for your region.
- Insert a microSD card while the player is powered down, if you use removable storage. Let the media scan complete before importing playlists.
- Choose the output—3.5mm or 4.4mm—before pressing play, and begin at a low volume.
- Select Quad-DAC or Octa-DAC in the audio settings. Use Quad-DAC for endurance and Octa-DAC when your headphones need the extra output.
- Set a baseline by disabling DAR, EQ, crossfeed and EnviroTune. Add processing one feature at a time so you can identify what changes.
- Install streaming apps from Google Play, sign in, and download a short playlist for offline use if the service permits it.
- Test USB DAC mode by connecting a computer and selecting the PD5 as its audio output. Disconnect and reconnect if the computer does not enumerate it.
Battery expectations in real use
Battery life depends primarily on DAC mode, but wireless radios, screen use, volume and file format also matter. Treat the manufacturer’s Quad-DAC figure as an upper-limit claim rather than a guarantee. Octa-DAC’s shorter runtime is the trade-off for its higher output and more energetic presentation.

For travel, download music, disable Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth when they are unnecessary, reduce screen timeout and stay in Quad-DAC mode. For a desk session, keep the player connected to power and use Octa-DAC if your headphones benefit from it. Avoid judging battery health from a single charge cycle.

Price, package and availability
What Hi‑Fi? lists launch/review pricing of £899 in the UK, $1049 in the United States and AU$1399 in Australia (2026). The same review notes that the SR35 launched at £799/$799/AU$1299, making the PD5 the more expensive successor. Astell&Kern’s UK storefront also showed an £899 sale price in 2026 but marked the player sold out. Stock and currency pricing change, so check the retailer serving your market immediately before ordering.
The official UK package contains the PD5, a USB-C-to-USB-C cable, a TPU case, three screen protectors, a quick-start guide and a warranty card. Budget separately for a high-capacity microSD card if your library exceeds the internal storage. A wired headphone with a properly terminated 4.4mm cable is the other logical companion purchase.
PD5 versus the SR35
| Decision factor | PD5 | SR35 context |
|---|---|---|
| Sound assessment | Reviewed as clearer, more detailed, spacious and more separated | The outgoing model used as the direct predecessor |
| Balanced output | 4.4mm; up to 8Vrms in Octa-DAC mode | Lower launch positioning; exact comparable output figure not stated in the supplied material |
| Battery strategy | Selectable Quad-DAC and Octa-DAC modes | No directly comparable mode figures stated |
| Price at launch/review | £899/$1049/AU$1399 | £799/$799/AU$1299 launch pricing, as reported by What Hi‑Fi? |
| Physical impression | Cleaner, edge-free design; reviewer found it less dense in hand | Felt denser and slightly more premium to that reviewer |
Choose the PD5 when its additional detail, output headroom, storage flexibility and selectable battery modes address a real need. Choose the older model or another player when the lower price and denser feel matter more than the PD5’s documented sonic and connectivity upgrades. The comparison is based on the 2026 review’s observations; it is not a claim that every listener will hear the same difference.

Who should buy the PD5?
It makes sense for
- Listeners who own revealing wired headphones and want a highly resolving, dynamically controlled source.
- People who need both a large local library and installed streaming services.
- Travelers who value a long Quad-DAC mode and can accept shorter Octa-DAC endurance when power is needed.
- Desktop users who want one device to act as a portable player and USB DAC.
- Owners of headphones with a 4.4mm balanced cable or models that benefit from higher output voltage.
Look elsewhere if
- Your listening is mostly Bluetooth and you will rarely use the wired outputs.
- You require instant, phone-like app performance or excellent outdoor screen visibility.
- The £899/$1049/AU$1399 class price exceeds your budget.
- Your headphones are very sensitive and do not need the PD5’s output capability.
Known limitations and practical fixes
- Outdoor glare: Increase brightness temporarily, seek shade or control playback with physical buttons; the reflective panel remains a hardware limitation.
- Slow library navigation: Keep folder names simple, allow indexing to finish and avoid importing an unnecessarily huge catalog at once.
- Shorter-than-expected battery life: Check DAC mode, screen timeout, Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth and high-rate processing such as DAR before assuming a battery fault.
- No sound from a balanced cable: Verify that the cable is wired for 4.4mm balanced output and that the plug is fully seated. Do not force a 3.5mm adapter into the balanced jack.
- Streaming app problems: Confirm Wi‑Fi access, Google Play updates, account permissions and regional service availability. Offline downloads are governed by each service’s own rules.
- USB DAC not detected: Reconnect the cable, select USB DAC mode on the PD5, then choose it as the computer’s output device. Try another data-capable USB-C cable if it still fails.
Final assessment
The PD5 earns its premium positioning through a combination of sound quality, output flexibility and unusually complete playback options. Its clearest strengths are the detailed, spacious wired presentation reported in testing, the ability to switch between efficient and maximum-performance DAC operation, the 4.4mm balanced connection, large expandable storage and USB DAC functionality. Its compromises—smartphone-like software that is not quite smartphone-fast, outdoor screen glare, substantial weight for a pocket device and a high, region-dependent price—are equally clear.
For a headphone enthusiast building a serious portable setup, the PD5 is a strong buy despite its cost. For casual or predominantly wireless listeners, those same dedicated-audio features are unlikely to repay the premium.
