AST SpaceMobile and Starlink Direct to Cell both extend a mobile operator’s service to ordinary compatible phones beyond terrestrial tower coverage, but they use different satellite architectures. AST SpaceMobile’s BlueBird system is presented as a broadband cellular network that relays a phone’s signal through a ground gateway into a partner operator’s network. Starlink’s Direct to Cell satellites carry LTE payloads that SpaceX describes as cell towers in space, using partner-carrier spectrum and Starlink’s network infrastructure.

Neither is a standalone satellite-internet replacement for a mobile carrier. Your country, carrier, phone model, plan, regulatory approvals and the service’s rollout stage determine what actually works.

The short version: what is different

AST SpaceMobile and Starlink are pursuing the same practical outcome—keeping a normal mobile phone connected where terrestrial towers are unavailable—but their network designs and commercial emphasis differ.

Question AST SpaceMobile / BlueBird Starlink Direct to Cell
How the satellite is used BlueBird is described as a broadband cellular satellite with very large phased arrays. It relays the phone connection to a ground gateway. Direct to Cell satellites carry LTE modem payloads that SpaceX describes as cell towers in space.
How traffic reaches the carrier The gateway compensates for delay and Doppler effects, then routes traffic into the mobile operator’s network. Starlink’s satellite and ground infrastructure carries traffic to the participating operator’s core network.
Spectrum AST says it uses mobile-network-operator spectrum together with AST’s own global spectrum holdings. SpaceX says partner operators provide LTE spectrum in the 1.6–2.7 GHz range.
Stated service ambition Space-based 4G/5G broadband for calls, texts, video, streaming and apps, subject to operator deployment. Commercial messaging was announced first, with data, voice and IoT described as expansion goals in the February 2025 announcement.
Phone hardware AST says existing smartphones can connect without a satellite phone or additional hardware or software. SpaceX says standard LTE phones can connect without hardware or software changes.
Who controls the customer service Partner mobile operators determine plan options and availability. The participating mobile operator controls eligibility, plans and local service availability.
Can one be declared faster? No. The available material contains vendor specifications and dated service announcements, not a current independent, controlled comparison.

The practical consequence is simple: do not choose by satellite brand alone. Check the mobile operator that serves your country, the exact phone model and the plan that includes satellite connectivity.

What “satellite-to-phone” means in both systems

Traditional satellite internet normally requires a dedicated terminal, antenna or satellite phone. These services take a different approach: a compatible cellular handset communicates directly with a satellite, while the mobile operator remains part of the connection.

They are extensions of carrier networks

AST SpaceMobile and Starlink Direct to Cell are carrier-integrated services. The phone is still associated with a participating mobile operator, and the operator’s spectrum, authorization, core network and commercial plan matter. A partnership announcement does not automatically mean that every customer of that operator can use the service.

“Normal phone” has limits

Both providers describe connections to ordinary compatible LTE or 4G/5G phones rather than dedicated satellite handsets. That does not mean every phone works, nor that every plan includes the service. Device certification, carrier configuration, local authorization and the rollout status in the relevant country remain decisive.

Regulation and geography affect the result

Satellite spectrum rights, gateway authorization, operator integration and national regulatory approval all constrain where service can be offered. A carrier may announce a partnership before retail service is available, or may enable only certain messaging, data or emergency features in a particular market.

How AST SpaceMobile’s BlueBird network is designed

AST SpaceMobile describes BlueBird as a cellular broadband system intended to connect directly to existing mobile devices outside terrestrial tower coverage. Its How It Works explanation describes a four-stage path:

  1. The phone connects to a BlueBird satellite. The handset uses a participating mobile operator’s cellular service arrangement rather than a separate satellite-phone subscription.
  2. BlueBird relays the signal to a ground gateway. The satellite’s large antenna system receives the cellular signal and sends it toward a gateway on Earth.
  3. The gateway compensates for satellite-link effects. AST says the gateway compensates for delay and Doppler shift before forwarding traffic.
  4. The gateway routes traffic into the mobile operator’s network. From the operator’s perspective, the connection can then use the carrier’s normal network services and systems.

Large phased arrays and many cellular beams

AST says BlueBird satellites use thousands of antennas and provide 4G/5G broadband directly to devices. Its current SpaceMobile Network page states that next-generation arrays measure 2,400 square feet, offer 10 GHz of processing bandwidth and can deliver over 150 Mbps per coverage cell. AST’s explainer says each next-generation BlueBird can provide more than 150 Mbps per cell across more than 2,000 cells.

Those are company specifications and peak or capacity claims, not an individual subscriber’s guaranteed speed. A cell-level figure is not the same as the throughput a person will see after spectrum sharing, carrier policies, satellite geometry, device limitations and demand are taken into account.

AST’s spectrum and operator model

AST says it combines frequencies licensed by mobile-network-operator partners with its own global spectrum holdings. The company says it has partnered with more than 60 mobile network operators worldwide. Operators determine the flexible plan options, so the customer-facing product can differ by market.

AST’s own wording emphasizes that users do not need a satellite phone or an extra accessory: “No satellite phones. No additional hardware or software. Just full broadband, direct from space to your existing mobile device.” That is a company description of the intended service, not a promise that every existing handset or plan is eligible.

Gateway deployment

AST says only one or a few gateways may be needed per country, although the actual number and deployment status must be checked market by market. Gateway availability, backhaul, licensing and operator integration can therefore affect a service launch even after satellites are in orbit.

How Starlink Direct to Cell is designed

SpaceX’s January 10, 2024 Direct to Cell technical update describes satellites equipped with LTE modem payloads. SpaceX’s phrase is that “Direct to Cell satellites act like cell towers in space.”

The satellite carries an LTE payload

Instead of treating the satellite mainly as a relay to a separate cellular radio system on the ground, SpaceX says the satellite itself carries LTE equipment that communicates with compatible phones. The phone uses the LTE interface it already supports.

Partner spectrum and Starlink infrastructure

SpaceX says mobile-operator partners provide LTE spectrum in the 1.6–2.7 GHz range. Starlink’s satellite and ground infrastructure then carries the traffic toward the partner operator’s core network. SpaceX compares the integration to a standard roaming relationship: the operator supplies the mobile-network relationship and spectrum, while Starlink supplies the satellite and supporting network infrastructure.

Feature rollout is staged

Starlink’s February 2025 Direct to Cell service announcement said satellite messaging was commercially available in the United States with T-Mobile and in New Zealand with One NZ at that time. The same announcement described expansion work toward IoT, data and voice services.

That announcement is dated. It should not be treated as a definitive October 2026 country list or as proof that all those features are available to every customer today. Check the relevant carrier’s current service page for the country, plan and handset being considered.

Phone-to-satellite link Existing compatible mobile device connects to BlueBird using a partner-carrier service arrangement. Standard LTE phone connects to the satellite’s LTE payload.
Space-to-ground path BlueBird sends traffic to a ground gateway. Starlink satellite and ground infrastructure carries traffic to the operator network.
Ground processing described AST says the gateway compensates for delay and Doppler shift before routing traffic. SpaceX emphasizes the LTE payload in orbit and integration with the operator core; the cited technical update does not provide an equivalent gateway-processing description.
Network handoff Gateway routes traffic into the partner mobile operator’s network. Traffic is handed into the partner operator’s core network in an arrangement SpaceX compares with roaming.
Stated capacity figure Over 150 Mbps per coverage cell and more than 2,000 cells per next-generation BlueBird, according to AST. No directly comparable per-cell throughput figure is stated in the cited material.

Service features: what is promised versus what is available

AST’s materials present BlueBird as a broadband cellular service that can support voice, video, texts, streaming and apps. The stated goal is broader than a text-only emergency link, but the exact customer experience depends on the operator, country, spectrum and rollout.

Starlink’s dated February 2025 announcement established commercial satellite messaging with the named operators in the United States and New Zealand at that time. It also described data, voice and IoT as services Starlink was working toward. Those statements describe a rollout stage, not a universal feature set.

Feature question AST SpaceMobile evidence Starlink Direct to Cell evidence
Messaging Included in AST’s broadband service descriptions, subject to operator deployment. Commercially available with T-Mobile in the United States and One NZ in New Zealand in the February 2025 announcement.
Voice Included among the uses AST describes for its broadband cellular network. Described as part of the planned expansion in the February 2025 announcement; current availability must be verified with the carrier.
Data and apps AST positions BlueBird as broadband for apps, streaming and other data services. Data was described as an expansion area in the February 2025 announcement; the announcement alone does not establish current availability for every market.
IoT Not specified as a separate commercial feature in the cited AST pages. IoT was listed among the services Starlink intended to expand toward.

Phone, plan and carrier requirements

AST SpaceMobile requirements

  • A compatible existing smartphone capable of the operator’s supported cellular bands and configuration.
  • A participating mobile operator in the country where the service is being used.
  • A plan or service option enabled by that operator. AST says operators determine flexible plan options.
  • Regulatory approval, spectrum rights and a deployed BlueBird and gateway serving the relevant area.

Starlink Direct to Cell requirements

  • A standard LTE-compatible phone that the participating carrier has approved.
  • A plan and account with an operator offering Direct to Cell in that market.
  • Coverage and service authorization for the specific country or region.
  • The feature supported at that stage of rollout—messaging is not automatically equivalent to data or voice.

Why “my phone supports 5G” is not enough

Phone generation alone does not establish eligibility. The carrier may restrict the feature to a device list, firmware version, plan tier or particular radio bands. A phone can be technically modern yet excluded from a carrier’s satellite service.

Availability and deployment milestones

AST SpaceMobile’s published BlueBird timeline

AST’s Our Journey page lists these company-reported launches:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Satellites Launch date listed by AST
BlueBird 1–5 September 12, 2024
BlueBird 6 December 23, 2025
BlueBird 7 April 19, 2026
BlueBird 8–10 June 17, 2026
BlueBird 11–13 August 5, 2026

The same timeline lists commercial arrangements with AT&T, Verizon, Vodafone and stc group, among other partners. It says the Verizon agreement anticipated service beginning in 2026; that wording does not confirm an exact launch date or availability for every Verizon customer.

Starlink’s dated service and partner announcements

SpaceX’s January 2024 technical update named T-Mobile, Rogers, Optus, One NZ, KDDI, Salt and Entel as announced partners at that publication time. Its February 2025 service announcement identified commercial satellite messaging in the United States with T-Mobile and in New Zealand with One NZ.

Partner rosters and retail availability can change. An announced agreement is evidence of a relationship, not proof that a service is active, included in your plan or authorized in your location.

How to check whether satellite-to-phone service works for you

  1. Start with your country and mobile operator. Satellite-to-phone service is sold through participating carriers, not as a universal add-on that works on any network.
  2. Open the carrier’s current satellite-service page. For example, T-Mobile’s T-Satellite service page describes its service, compatible-device caveats, outdoor coverage conditions, service limitations and plan-dependent inclusion or add-on pricing.
  3. Check the exact phone model. Use the carrier’s compatibility list rather than relying on a general statement that the handset supports LTE or 5G.
  4. Check the plan treatment. Determine whether satellite service is included, requires an add-on or is unavailable on your plan. Do not assume that a family line, prepaid line or roaming line has the same eligibility as a primary postpaid line.
  5. Separate the available feature from the brand’s long-term goal. Confirm whether the carrier currently supports messaging only, or also data, voice or IoT.
  6. Confirm the physical coverage conditions. Carrier instructions may require outdoor use or a clear satellite view. T-Mobile’s service description, for example, specifies outdoor coverage conditions and limitations.
  7. Check the date and region. A service announcement from 2025, or a partner agreement for another country, is not proof of availability where you live in October 2026.

What the published numbers do—and do not—tell you

AST’s 150 Mbps figure is a cell capacity claim

AST states over 150 Mbps per coverage cell for its next-generation network and says a satellite can cover more than 2,000 cells. The wording describes a vendor-stated peak or network specification. It does not promise that one user will receive 150 Mbps, and it cannot be compared directly with a Starlink number that was measured under the same conditions because no such paired test is provided.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Array size is not the same as user coverage

AST’s 2,400-square-foot array specification describes the physical size of a next-generation satellite array. It does not by itself establish the usable footprint, indoor performance, device eligibility or retail coverage map in a particular country.

Starlink’s spectrum range is not a speed guarantee

The 1.6–2.7 GHz range in SpaceX’s January 2024 technical update identifies the operator LTE spectrum used in the described architecture. It does not state a universal customer speed, latency, capacity per cell or coverage result.

Why there is no honest universal winner

The available evidence measures different things. AST publishes architecture details and network specifications, including a per-cell capacity claim. Starlink’s cited material explains its LTE-in-space design and provides a dated commercial messaging announcement. Neither source set supplies a current independent head-to-head test using the same phone, carrier, location, spectrum, satellite elevation, weather and traffic load.

Therefore, it would be inaccurate to declare AST universally faster, Starlink universally more reliable, or either network universally broader. The better service for an individual is the one that is authorized by the local carrier, supports the person’s handset and plan, and offers the required feature in the places they travel.

Common misunderstandings

“Can I use a Starlink dish for Direct to Cell?”

No. Direct to Cell is the carrier-integrated satellite-to-phone service described by SpaceX. A conventional Starlink terminal is a different product category and does not establish eligibility for a phone’s Direct to Cell service.

“Do I need a dedicated satellite phone for AST?”

AST says its intended BlueBird service connects to existing mobile devices without a satellite phone or additional hardware or software. You still need a participating operator, an eligible phone and an enabled plan.

“Does a carrier partnership mean I can use it today?”

No. Partnership announcements, satellite launches and retail activation are separate milestones. Check the carrier’s current service page for the specific country, device and plan.

“If messaging works, will video streaming work?”

Not necessarily. Messaging, data, voice and broadband applications can be introduced at different rollout stages and may have different device, plan and network requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

AST SpaceMobile’s BlueBird is presented as a large-array, broadband cellular satellite that sends a phone’s traffic through a gateway into a partner operator’s network. Starlink Direct to Cell is presented as an LTE cell tower in space, using partner-carrier spectrum and Starlink infrastructure to reach the operator core. Both depend on carrier integration, regulation, compatible phones and eligible plans. Use the local carrier’s current device and coverage information—not a satellite launch count, a partnership headline or a vendor peak figure—to decide what will actually work for you.
