AST SpaceMobile vs. Starlink: How Their Direct-to-Phone Strategies Differ

Both AST SpaceMobile and Starlink aim to connect ordinary mobile phones directly to satellites in low Earth orbit, with mobile operators central to the service. Their strategies differ in satellite design, service ambitions and rollout stage: Starlink describes a roaming-like extension of partner LTE networks, while AST is building large-array BlueBird satellites for a planned cellular-broadband service sold through operator agreements. In the evidence available here, Starlink had reported commercial messaging in two markets in February 2025; AST said in a June 2026 filing that its service had not launched.

How does Starlink Direct to Cell work?

SpaceX describes Direct to Cell satellites as cell towers in space. They connect to ordinary LTE phones using spectrum supplied by mobile network operator partners, with the integration designed to work much like a standard roaming partner. That makes the operator relationship part of the connection model, not an optional add-on.

Why the satellite needs specialized equipment

A phone on the ground has a small antenna and limited transmit power compared with conventional satellite terminals. SpaceX identifies those constraints, along with Doppler shift and latency, as technical challenges. Its February 2025 description says the system uses phased-array antennas, custom silicon and software that adjusts beam size and placement to communicate with phones.

What the service was reported to offer

In its February 2025 service note, SpaceX said commercial messaging was available to T-Mobile customers in the United States and One NZ customers in New Zealand. It described plans to add other countries and, later, IoT, data and voice. Those are dated statements: they do not establish the full service map or feature availability on October 4, 2026. SpaceX also reported more than 400 satellites in its constellation at the time of that 2025 note; that is a historical count, not a current total.

How is AST SpaceMobile different from Starlink?

AST’s plan is built around its BlueBird satellites and a wholesale model in which mobile operators distribute a planned SpaceMobile service to their subscribers. Its June 2026 SEC filing describes satellites intended to connect directly to off-the-shelf, unmodified devices. The company emphasizes large phased arrays and beamforming to support cellular voice, data and video.

BlueBird’s large-array design

AST’s June 2026 filing describes Block 2 satellites with phased arrays of up to approximately 2,400 square feet, designed to provide up to ten times the bandwidth capacity of Block 1 satellites. These are design and capacity claims, not proof of a particular customer’s speed or experience in commercial service.

The same filing reports that AST had achieved a peak data speed of 98.9 Mbps directly to a standard, unmodified smartphone in a prior demonstration. That is a reported peak test result, not a typical-rate promise. Separately, AST’s official network page, accessed October 4, 2026, advertises peak speeds of over 150 Mbps per coverage cell for its next-generation satellites. That is the company’s stated capability, not independently verified commercial performance.

Different emphasis, not a proven performance ranking

Starlink’s February 2025 description focuses on making satellite connectivity integrate with partner LTE networks in a roaming-like way. AST’s materials emphasize the capacity and reach its large arrays are designed to provide through operator distribution. The cited sources do not establish a comparable independent field test of the two networks, so neither set of company claims supports declaring one the faster or better-performing consumer service.

How the carrier and spectrum models compare

Dimension Starlink Direct to Cell AST SpaceMobile
Operator role Partners supply LTE spectrum; SpaceX describes the integration as similar to roaming. (SpaceX, February 2025) Operators are intended to distribute the service under wholesale agreements. AST reported partnerships with more than 60 mobile network operators in its 2026 filing; partnerships do not by themselves mean a consumer service is live.
Spectrum description SpaceX says partner LTE spectrum in the 1.6–2.7 GHz range is used for satellite transmissions. (SpaceX, February 2025) AST says its service combines spectrum licensed by operator partners with its own spectrum holdings. (AST official network page)
Reach represented by partnerships The cited February 2025 service note named T-Mobile in the United States and One NZ in New Zealand for messaging availability at that time. AST’s 2026 filing described partner footprints of more than 3 billion subscribers. That figure refers to partners’ reach, not AST subscribers or active satellite coverage.

AST’s filing names arrangements with AT&T, Vodafone, Verizon and Saudi Telecom Company, among others. It describes an intended AT&T service area in the continental United States, excluding Alaska and Hawaii, and Verizon service “when needed” in those geographies. It also describes a ten-year agreement with Saudi Telecom Company for Saudi Arabia and key regional markets, plus a Vodafone/SatCo distribution arrangement. These are contract and intended-market descriptions, not a current retail plan list; a partnership alone does not establish local availability.

What is actually available, and what is still a target?

Starlink: a dated commercial-messaging report

SpaceX’s February 2025 note reported commercial messaging availability in the United States with T-Mobile and in New Zealand with One NZ. It also described future expansion and additional service types. The cited material does not provide a verified country-by-country availability and feature matrix for October 2026, so check the relevant operator for current eligibility and service details rather than treating the 2025 snapshot as a complete map.

AST: planned testing and coverage in the cited filing

AST’s June 2026 SEC filing said the SpaceMobile Service “has not been launched” as of that filing. It described beta testing and an initial limited, noncontinuous service as plans, rather than a generally available service. AST’s official FAQ says initial U.S. beta users are targeted through AT&T and Verizon, with nationwide noncontinuous coverage as the initial approach. That is a company target, not evidence that a reader can sign up today.

The filing recorded 13 BlueBird spacecraft launched by August 5, 2026: BB6 in December 2025, BB8–BB10 in June 2026, and BB11–BB13 on August 5, 2026, in addition to earlier spacecraft. It also says BB7 reached an orbit too low to sustain operations and was de-orbited. A launched spacecraft count therefore should not be read as a count of operating satellites or as proof of continuous customer coverage.

AST’s filing set a target of approximately 45 satellites in early 2027, based on expectations at the time. The filing notes that timing depends on manufacturing, launch readiness, regulatory approvals and other uncertainties, so this is a forward-looking target, not a guaranteed deployment date.

Regulatory context

The FCC’s December 2024 order describes the U.S. supplemental coverage from space framework, SpaceX’s authorization context, and spectrum arrangements then being sought by AST and AT&T. It is useful for understanding that regulatory framework at that date, but it predates later developments and does not establish current authorizations on its own.

What does a subscriber need?

Neither service model described here points to buying a dedicated satellite handset, a user dish or a special antenna. Both companies describe direct connectivity to standard mobile phones. The practical dependency is the operator relationship: a service must be available through a participating carrier and applicable plan in the user’s market. The cited sources do not establish a current carrier-by-carrier plan, price or eligibility list, so confirm those details with the operator before relying on coverage.

How to compare the strategies fairly

  • Separate design claims from service evidence. Array size, bandwidth capacity and advertised peak speeds describe AST’s design or company-stated capabilities; they are not typical commercial results.
  • Keep dates attached to availability claims. Starlink’s cited commercial messaging report is from February 2025. AST’s no-launch status is from its June 2026 filing, which also sets out later targets.
  • Do not equate partnerships with coverage. Operator agreements and partner subscriber footprints indicate distribution potential, not an active service in every partner market.
  • Do not infer a head-to-head winner. The available sources do not supply an independent, comparable field test of both networks.

The core strategic difference is therefore in how each company describes its route from orbit to the phone: Starlink presents a satellite extension of partner LTE roaming, while AST is pursuing a carrier-distributed broadband network built around large phased-array BlueBird satellites. Their commercial maturity in the cited evidence is also different, but present-day availability must be checked against dated operator information rather than inferred from plans, targets or older launch announcements.
