Starlink Direct to Cell is the practical choice today because it is already sold through carrier services such as T-Mobile T-Satellite, with documented U.S. coverage, international partner coverage and support on many recent phones. AST SpaceMobile is pursuing a more ambitious cellular-broadband network for ordinary phones, including voice, video, streaming and higher-throughput data, but its consumer availability still depends on satellite launches, spectrum approvals, carrier agreements and local service launches.
At a glance: which service is ahead?
The two systems solve the same basic problem—connecting a normal mobile phone outside terrestrial tower coverage—but they are at different stages. Starlink Direct to Cell has moved into a carrier product through T-Mobile’s T-Satellite service. Eligible customers can receive satellite messaging, location sharing, emergency text and limited satellite data when no terrestrial or roaming network is available.

AST SpaceMobile is building a space-based cellular network intended to behave more like a broadband mobile tower. AST says its next-generation BlueBird satellites are designed to support voice calls, video calls, messaging, streaming and downloads on ordinary phones. Those are company technology and roadmap claims, not proof that a uniform retail service is available in every country today.

How the two networks work
AST SpaceMobile: a cellular network in orbit
AST combines mobile-network-operator spectrum with spectrum holdings of its own. Its BlueBird satellites are intended to provide large cellular coverage cells from orbit, allowing a compatible phone to connect automatically after it leaves tower range. The phone is not expected to use a special satellite radio interface; the goal is for the satellite system to work with the cellular capabilities already present in the handset.
AST says the next-generation BlueBird satellites launching through 2025 and 2026 are designed for more than 2,000 coverage cells and peak speeds above 150 Mbps per cell. The company also says phones will be able to use familiar services such as voice, video calls, messaging, streaming and file downloads. Actual user experience will depend on which satellites are operating, the partner carrier, spectrum authorization, satellite elevation, handset support and network capacity.
Starlink Direct to Cell: an eNodeB on a Starlink satellite
Starlink Direct to Cell places an eNodeB modem on a Starlink satellite. In effect, the satellite performs the role of a cellular tower in space and connects into a partner mobile network. Starlink says no specialized hardware is required for compatible off-the-shelf cellular modems.

When the phone has no usable terrestrial or roaming connection, it can connect to the satellite service automatically where coverage and sky visibility permit. T-Mobile presents the service as a way to keep essential communication working off grid, not as a replacement for a normal high-speed terrestrial connection.
Coverage: where each option works
T-Mobile T-Satellite coverage today
T-Mobile’s support documentation lists coverage across the Continental United States, Puerto Rico, Hawaii and parts of southern Alaska. It also identifies international partner coverage in Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. These areas describe the documented service footprint, not a guarantee that every outdoor location within a boundary will connect.

Satellite visibility is the decisive practical limitation. T-Mobile warns that terrain, tree cover, buildings, aircraft, cruise ships, network traffic and local regulation can reduce or block service. A phone in an open field may connect while the same phone fails inside a building, beneath dense forest or between steep canyon walls. A displayed coverage area therefore should be read as an availability region subject to local conditions.
AST SpaceMobile’s developing footprint
AST’s network pages describe launches during 2025 and 2026 and a long-term global objective. Regulatory records include AST’s request for authorization for a planned 248-satellite system, along with proceedings involving AST and AT&T spectrum use. Those filings show the scale of the planned network and the regulatory work involved; they do not establish a single, fully active worldwide consumer map.
AST availability must be checked through the relevant mobile-network partner when service launches in a particular country. A satellite may be technically capable of covering a region, yet a customer still needs a carrier agreement, approved spectrum, a supported handset and authorization under local rules. Treat broad global statements about AST as deployment plans unless a carrier has announced a live product for your location.
Why a map is not a service guarantee
- Sky view: The phone needs a usable path to a satellite. Roofs, walls, trees and mountains can interrupt it.
- Satellite elevation: A low-angle satellite can be blocked more easily than one high overhead.
- Capacity: Many users in one area share satellite and spectrum resources.
- Handset position: Orientation, antenna design and the phone’s ability to maintain a satellite link affect connection time.
- Regulation: A service can be technically possible but unavailable until national or regional approvals are complete.
- Carrier configuration: Roaming and partner agreements determine whether a phone is allowed onto the satellite network.
Speed and what you can actually do
AST’s published speed figures
AST’s official FAQ records a company-reported speed test of 98.9 Mbps in May 2026. It also says the next-generation BlueBird satellites are designed for peak rates above 150 Mbps per coverage cell. The 98.9 Mbps figure is a reported test result, not an independent benchmark, and the 150 Mbps figure is a design peak rather than a guaranteed customer rate.
Those numbers indicate the type of cellular-broadband performance AST is targeting. They do not mean every phone, satellite pass or location will receive 98.9 Mbps. Throughput can vary with visibility, spectrum, satellite elevation, simultaneous users, handset capability, carrier settings and regulatory power limits.

Starlink Direct to Cell’s current capability
T-Mobile describes T-Satellite as limited-speed satellite data optimized for selected apps. Its support material explicitly says satellite data is not high-speed data and that applications may behave differently from their terrestrial versions. Current supported functions include text messaging, location sharing, picture and audio messaging, emergency text and access to selected low-bandwidth apps.
A message may take longer to send than it does on a terrestrial network, and an app that normally loads photographs, maps or video may provide a reduced experience or fail until the phone returns to a conventional network. T-Mobile’s own wording is the appropriate expectation: the service is built for essential communication away from coverage, not for ordinary high-speed mobile broadband.
Why there is no universal speed winner
It is tempting to compare 98.9 Mbps with T-Satellite’s limited-speed description and declare AST the winner. That would mix different types of evidence. AST publishes one company-reported test and a future design target. T-Mobile publishes current feature and limitation descriptions without a directly comparable throughput benchmark in the cited material. Until both systems are measured under the same conditions, no fair universal speed ranking exists.
| Use case | T-Satellite today | AST objective |
|---|---|---|
| Two-way text | Supported, subject to coverage and handset eligibility | Planned as part of ordinary cellular service |
| Location sharing | Supported | Intended to work through the partner cellular connection |
| Picture or audio message | Supported, with satellite delays and limitations possible | Planned cellular-broadband capability |
| Voice call | Not identified as a general current T-Satellite capability in the cited documentation | AST says its system is designed for voice calls |
| Video call or streaming | Not a high-speed-data use case for the current service | AST says its system is designed for video, streaming and downloads |
| Emergency text | Supported where the phone, account and satellite conditions allow | Public materials reviewed do not establish one universal AST consumer emergency-service policy |
Phone compatibility and requirements
Using T-Satellite with an existing phone
T-Mobile says most smartphones from the last four years work with T-Satellite, but “most” is not the same as every model. Eligibility and available features depend on the exact device, software, account and plan. T-Mobile’s support page provides an IMEI and device checker; use it before assuming that a phone supports satellite data.
Some eligible phones may support messaging and location sharing while lacking every satellite-data feature. T-Mobile’s August 20, 2025 newsroom announcement identified Pixel 10 as satellite-data-ready at launch. Other devices could initially support messaging and location sharing depending on device and operating-system readiness. A phone that can send an emergency text is not automatically entitled to every data feature.

Using AST SpaceMobile
AST says its system is designed around ordinary mobile devices and partner-carrier spectrum, rather than a dedicated satellite phone. That does not mean every existing iPhone or Android model will work at launch. The carrier must support the service, the handset must contain the required cellular bands and software configuration, and the country’s regulators must authorize the spectrum arrangement.
Because AST’s consumer launches are partner-specific, compatibility information should come from the mobile operator offering the service in your country. Until that operator publishes a supported-device list and enrollment process, a general statement that “any phone works” is too broad.

What T-Satellite costs
T-Mobile says T-Satellite is included with certain plans. Other T-Mobile customers can add it for $10 per month, subject to the plan’s terms and device eligibility. The $10 figure is a recurring add-on price for the documented T-Mobile offering, not a universal price for every Starlink Direct to Cell partner or country.
The service is designed to appear automatically when no terrestrial or roaming network is available and satellite coverage and sky visibility permit. Customers generally do not buy a dish or activate a separate satellite-phone number for this use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat AST costs
The public AST materials establish the network architecture, partner-spectrum model, deployment roadmap and regulatory process, but they do not provide one universal consumer plan or country-by-country price list. Pricing will therefore depend on the mobile-network partner, market, plan and launch terms. Check the carrier serving your location rather than treating AST’s technology announcements as a retail offer.

Can you make a normal call or stream video?
With current T-Satellite
Set expectations around essential communication. Text, location sharing, picture and audio messages and selected low-bandwidth apps are the documented focus. T-Mobile describes satellite data as limited speed, and app behavior can differ from terrestrial service. A normal voice call, video meeting or high-resolution stream should not be assumed merely because the phone displays a satellite connection.
With AST SpaceMobile
AST’s stated objective is broader: ordinary phones should be able to use voice, video calls, messaging, streaming and downloads through the satellite network. Those capabilities are part of AST’s design and company claims. Whether they are available to a customer depends on the particular satellites in service, partner carrier, spectrum authorization, phone model and local launch status.
Emergency use: what to rely on
T-Satellite includes emergency text in the documented feature set, but successful delivery still requires an eligible phone, a supported account, satellite coverage and enough sky visibility. If a message does not send, move outdoors to an unobstructed area, keep the phone oriented as instructed by its satellite interface and allow additional time for transmission.
Do not treat a satellite indicator as a guarantee that emergency services can immediately receive a message. Buildings, aircraft, cruise ships, terrain, trees, congestion and local rules can interrupt service. When terrestrial emergency calling is available, use it. If you are travelling beyond coverage, carry a separate safety plan appropriate to the region rather than depending on an untested phone connection.
AST’s public materials describe broadband and voice ambitions but do not establish one universal consumer emergency procedure across all future carrier deployments. Emergency behavior will need to be confirmed in the operator’s terms for the country and plan you use.
How to check whether your phone will work
- Identify the exact model: Open the phone’s About screen and record the model number, not just the family name.
- Check the carrier account: Confirm that your plan includes T-Satellite or that the $10 monthly add-on is available to your account.
- Run the IMEI checker: Use T-Mobile’s T-Satellite device and IMEI checker to see whether the model is eligible and which features it supports.
- Install current software: Apply the operating-system and carrier-configuration updates required by the phone manufacturer and carrier.
- Review the feature list: Distinguish messaging and location support from satellite-data support; they may not be enabled together.
- Check the destination country: For AST or international T-Satellite use, verify that the carrier partner offers service in that country and that local regulation permits it.
- Test before relying on it: From an open outdoor location, send a non-urgent message and learn how the phone indicates satellite alignment. Never test by contacting emergency services.
Common failure modes and fixes
The phone shows no satellite connection
- Move outside and away from walls, roofs, dense tree cover and tall structures.
- Walk toward a wider view of the sky; a canyon, hillside or building can block a low-elevation satellite.
- Keep the device still long enough for registration instead of repeatedly toggling airplane mode.
- Confirm that the account, SIM or eSIM and device software are current.
Messages remain pending
- Reduce the message to text if a picture or audio attachment is delaying transmission.
- Wait for a clear satellite pass; limited capacity and changing elevation can lengthen delivery.
- Move to a location with fewer obstructions and retry only after the phone indicates a link.
- Use another communication method if the matter is urgent and the satellite link remains unavailable.
An app works on the ground but not over satellite
T-Mobile warns that satellite data is limited speed and that app behavior can differ from terrestrial service. Use the selected apps identified as supported by the carrier, avoid assuming that every background synchronization or media service will work, and wait until a terrestrial network returns for large downloads or video.
The phone is eligible for messaging but not data
This is a feature distinction, not necessarily a fault. T-Mobile notes that some phones support messaging without all satellite-data features. Check the model-specific result, software version and account plan before replacing the handset.

Which service should you choose?
Choose Starlink Direct to Cell through T-Mobile when:
- You need a service that is already offered as a consumer carrier feature.
- Your priority is texting, location sharing, emergency text and limited off-grid app access.
- You live or travel in the documented T-Mobile coverage regions and can meet the phone and plan requirements.
- You prefer automatic satellite access without buying a dish or dedicated satellite handset.
Watch AST SpaceMobile when:
- You want the possibility of ordinary cellular broadband rather than a messaging-first fallback.
- Voice, video, streaming and downloads are important and you can wait for a carrier launch in your market.
- Your mobile operator announces AST support, compatible devices, pricing and an approved coverage map.
- You are evaluating long-term network capability rather than buying a universally available service today.
The sensible decision is based on availability first, then capability. A planned 150 Mbps-per-cell design target cannot help if AST has not launched with your carrier, while a live T-Satellite subscription is useful only within its supported geography and visibility limits.
Quick Recap
What to remember before relying on satellite cellular service
- Starlink Direct to Cell is the more mature consumer option because T-Mobile already sells T-Satellite.
- AST SpaceMobile is targeting a broader cellular-broadband experience, but its availability remains dependent on launches, regulation and carrier partnerships.
- AST’s 98.9 Mbps May 2026 test and above-150-Mbps-per-cell design figure are company-reported and target values, not guaranteed customer speeds.
- T-Satellite is intentionally limited-speed and centered on messaging, location, emergency text and selected apps.
- Both approaches target compatible ordinary phones, but exact model, software, account, plan and country determine the real feature set.
- Open sky is a requirement for both systems; terrain, trees, buildings, traffic and regulation can interrupt service.
