Both use satellites and mobile-operator partnerships to reach ordinary phones outside terrestrial coverage, but their published service snapshots describe different stages. AST SpaceMobile presents a carrier-integrated broadband service intended to support voice, video, messaging, apps, streaming and downloads. SpaceX’s February 2025 announcement described commercial satellite messaging with T-Mobile in the United States and One NZ in New Zealand, while identifying data, voice and IoT as expansion goals.
Your actual experience will be determined by country, participating carrier, phone model, plan and the features that carrier has activated. There is no evidence here for a universal current coverage map, common handset list or standard price for either service, so confirm those details with the operator before changing phones or plans.

What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you
“Satellite-to-phone” describes a network connection, not one globally consistent product. A carrier must authorize the service, provide spectrum and integrate billing and emergency policies. The same satellite system can therefore offer different features in different countries.

The practical consequence is that a headline such as “which one is better?” has no single answer. A reader in one carrier market may have messaging only, while another market may eventually receive broader data service. Treat the tables and company statements below as a way to ask the right carrier-specific questions, not as a promise of service at your address.

How the two systems connect a phone
AST SpaceMobile’s cellular-broadband approach
AST describes a network in which BlueBird satellites work with mobile operators and allow a phone to move between a conventional cell tower and a satellite connection. The company’s connection explanation presents the satellite link as part of an operator’s mobile service rather than as a separate terminal that you carry.
Its FAQ says the target is an ordinary existing smartphone, with no special hardware, software update or app required. That is a general access description, not a guarantee that every model, operating-system version or carrier plan is enabled. The operator still controls authentication, spectrum, billing and the features available to your line.
Starlink Direct to Cell’s operator-linked LTE model
SpaceX’s February 2025 Direct to Cell announcement says partner operators supply their terrestrial networks and LTE spectrum while satellites extend connectivity to 4G LTE phones. In that document, the satellite segment is integrated with an operator’s mobile service rather than requiring a Starlink dish or a dedicated satellite handset.
The document reports more than 400 Direct to Cell satellites launched at the time. That is a company-reported February 2025 constellation figure, not a current October 2026 count. It also does not tell you how many satellites are usable above your location, which services your operator has activated or whether your exact handset is eligible.
Coverage and rollout: continuous, intermittent and market-specific
What AST’s satellite numbers mean
AST’s FAQ says 45–60 BlueBird satellites are expected to enable continuous coverage across selected strategic markets, including the United States, Europe and Japan. It says approximately 90 satellites are expected for worldwide 24/7 coverage. Those are company expectations about a planned constellation; they do not prove that every listed country has live service today or identify a date when coverage becomes continuous.
For the United States, the same FAQ describes an initial beta through AT&T and Verizon targeting non-continuous nationwide coverage. “Non-continuous” matters: a phone may connect during some satellite passes and lose the link between passes, even within a market described as nationwide. Terrain, buildings, foliage, radio conditions, satellite geometry and network capacity can further affect a session.

AST’s network page describes the next-generation BlueBird capability as more than 150 Mbps peak per coverage cell. That is a design or capability claim for a cell, not an average speed delivered to an individual phone. The FAQ also lists a 98.9 Mbps peak speed-test result from May 2026. It is a company-reported peak measurement, not a typical-user result and not a Starlink comparison.

SpaceX said satellite messaging was commercially available with T-Mobile in the United States and One NZ in New Zealand in February 2025. The same announcement identified other operator markets as testing or planned rollouts. Because the document is dated, it cannot serve as a live October 2026 service locator. Check the participating carrier’s current coverage and eligibility page for your country.
The February 2025 announcement described data, voice and IoT as areas SpaceX would work toward, rather than as universally available consumer features. A later carrier launch could change that position, but the cited document alone does not establish when, where or under which plans such expansion happened.
Why a regulatory order is not a coverage map
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission’s FCC 24-136 order provides regulatory context for supplemental coverage from space and records authorization involving SpaceX and then-pending AST arrangements. It predates later commercial developments. Regulatory authorization permits an operating framework; it does not tell you whether your phone can register today, which feature is enabled or what your carrier charges.
Features: published intentions versus documented availability
| Feature | AST SpaceMobile statement | Starlink Direct to Cell statement in February 2025 | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Messaging | Included among the intended broadband uses. | Commercial satellite messaging documented with T-Mobile in the U.S. and One NZ in New Zealand. | Starlink had a dated commercial messaging example; AST’s material describes a broader target but does not establish universal live access. |
| Voice calls | Intended capability. | Future expansion goal in the cited announcement. | Confirm whether your carrier has enabled voice, rather than inferring it from satellite coverage. |
| Video calls and streaming | Described as intended uses. | Not documented as commercially available in the cited February 2025 snapshot. | Requirements for bandwidth, latency and plan authorization make carrier confirmation essential. |
| Apps and downloads | Described as intended uses at 4G/5G speeds. | Data was described as future work in the cited snapshot. | Do not equate a peak satellite-cell figure with routine app performance. |
| IoT | Not specified as a consumer feature in the cited FAQ. | Identified as a future expansion area in February 2025. | IoT availability may use separate products, certifications or plans. |
This distinction prevents the most common comparison error: treating AST’s design and rollout language as proof of current consumer broadband, or treating Starlink’s February 2025 messaging announcement as a statement of its complete 2026 feature set.
Phones, software and equipment
AST requirements
AST’s FAQ answers the equipment question with “your existing, everyday smartphone” and says no special device, software update or app is needed. The statement does not list supported models, modem bands, operating-system versions or carrier-by-carrier exclusions. A phone that is technically capable of LTE or 5G can still be rejected by a carrier’s eligibility system.

Starlink requirements
SpaceX’s February 2025 document refers to 4G LTE mobile phones. It does not publish a complete current handset matrix covering every operator and country. Compatibility can depend on the phone’s LTE bands, software configuration, SIM or eSIM provisioning and the partner carrier’s plan rules.
What you should not buy on the strength of these descriptions
- Do not purchase a new handset solely because a listing says “satellite-ready.”
- Do not assume a satellite antenna, dish or emergency communicator unlocks either carrier service; the cited descriptions identify ordinary phones and operator integration instead.
- Do not assume an app can substitute for carrier authorization. AST specifically says an app is not required, and Starlink’s model uses partner-operator integration.
Before changing equipment, give the carrier your exact phone model, operating-system version, country, mobile plan and desired feature. Ask for written confirmation of eligibility if the service is important for work or safety.
Pricing and plan structure
AST says mobile operators determine cost. Its FAQ mentions possible day-pass, monthly add-on and emergency-use choices. The connection page also describes a standalone plan concept for remote areas and says pricing varies by market. These are plan concepts, not a published universal rate card or a guarantee that every option is offered.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe cited Starlink material does not establish a comparable consumer price. A carrier might include satellite messaging in an existing plan, sell it as an add-on, restrict it to emergency use or charge separately. The commercial label alone does not reveal which arrangement applies.
| Ask the carrier | Why it changes the real cost |
|---|---|
| Is satellite access included in my current plan? | An included benefit has a different value and renewal condition from a paid add-on. |
| Is access limited to emergencies, messaging or a data allowance? | Feature and usage limits determine whether the service meets your need. |
| Is billing monthly, per day, per message or by data? | Occasional travelers and permanent remote users have different break-even points. |
| Does roaming apply in another country? | A domestic satellite benefit may not work when your SIM is roaming internationally. |
| What happens when terrestrial service returns? | Some plans may fall back automatically; others may require a network or messaging mode change. |
How to check whether you can use either service
- Start with your country and carrier. Use the operator’s current service page, not an old launch announcement. Confirm that the operator participates in AST SpaceMobile or Direct to Cell in your market.
- Identify the exact feature. Ask separately about SMS or messaging, voice, video, ordinary data, app traffic and IoT. “Satellite service” is too vague to establish eligibility.
- Enter the exact handset. Provide the model number, not merely the product family. Ask whether an operating-system update, SIM replacement or eSIM activation is required.
- Check the coverage behavior. Find out whether service is continuous, pass-based or limited to particular outdoor locations. Ask about expected availability at your home, workplace and travel routes.
- Read plan and emergency terms. Verify recurring charges, one-time fees, data or message limits, emergency routing and whether the benefit ends when you change plans.
- Test before depending on it. With terrestrial service disabled only when safe and legal, follow the carrier’s instructions outdoors and record registration time, feature availability and fallback behavior. Never use an untested satellite link as your sole emergency plan.
What happens when a normal cell tower is available?
AST’s architecture is explicitly designed around switching between terrestrial towers and satellites. In principle, that lets the operator use the tower whenever it is available and the satellite path when the handset is outside terrestrial reach. The exact handoff rules, interruption behavior and supported applications remain carrier implementation details.
Starlink’s model likewise depends on a partner operator’s terrestrial network and LTE spectrum. Whether a phone stays on a terrestrial connection, displays a satellite indicator, queues a message or retries automatically depends on the operator’s software and service policy. A satellite-capable radio path does not guarantee seamless handoff for every app or call.

Speed, latency and the numbers you may see quoted
Peak figures are easy to misunderstand. AST’s 98.9 Mbps result is a company-reported peak test from May 2026. Its more-than-150-Mbps figure is a peak-per-coverage-cell capability claim for next-generation BlueBird satellites. Neither is a typical speed promise, and neither supplies a controlled comparison with Starlink Direct to Cell.
No independent, directly comparable real-world speed statistic is established in the cited material. Actual throughput and responsiveness can vary with satellite elevation, spectrum, cell loading, atmospheric conditions, handset orientation, obstructions and the operator’s traffic policy. Messaging may work under conditions that are unsuitable for sustained video or large downloads.
AST’s FAQ cites a GSMA statistic that more than 87% of Earth’s surface lies outside traditional cell-tower reach. The FAQ does not establish the original publication year in the supplied material, so treat it as a cited contextual statistic rather than a current independently verified coverage measurement. Surface area outside tower reach is not the same as population, road or household coverage.
Which service fits which need?
You mainly need an emergency message
Choose based on the carrier that offers a documented emergency or messaging feature for your phone and location. A broader broadband roadmap is less important than whether messages can be sent, received and billed under your plan today.
You need ordinary voice and data in remote areas
Look for a carrier that explicitly lists voice and data, not one that only says “satellite connectivity.” AST’s stated target is broader than the February 2025 Starlink snapshot, but the sources do not establish a universal live AST broadband service or a current Starlink feature set for every market.
You travel across countries
Compare country-by-country operator partnerships, roaming terms and handset bands. A service available with one national carrier may not follow your SIM across a border, even when the satellite constellation itself crosses that region.
Best Value
You are choosing a phone
Keep your current device until the participating carrier confirms the exact model and plan. Neither cited service description justifies buying a generic “satellite phone” or accessory as a substitute for operator eligibility.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using a launch date as a current status. SpaceX’s commercial-messaging page is dated February 2025; check the operator’s live page for October 2026 availability.
- Confusing a planned constellation with live coverage. AST’s 45–60 and approximately 90 satellite figures are expectations, not a current map.
- Reading “nationwide” as continuous. AST’s initial U.S. beta wording specifically says non-continuous coverage.
- Comparing unlike features. A messaging launch cannot be scored directly against a broadband intention that includes video and downloads.
- Assuming every LTE or 5G phone works. Carrier provisioning and model-level eligibility still apply.
- Treating peak speed as normal speed. Company-reported peaks do not describe average throughput, latency or reliability.
- Relying on a regulatory filing for consumer instructions. FCC authorization explains legal context, not your plan, phone or local signal.
Partnerships and the longer-term direction
AST’s October 8, 2025 announcement of a commercial agreement with Verizon included this statement from Verizon Senior Vice President of Technology and Product Development Srini Kalapala: “By integrating our expansive, reliable, robust terrestrial network with this innovative space-based technology, we are paving the way for a future where everything and everyone can be connected, regardless of geography.” The wording is explicitly future-oriented corporate aspiration. It should not be read as proof of universal Verizon coverage or a currently available feature in every market. The announcement is available at Nasdaq.
Both companies’ models make the carrier relationship central. Operators control customer identity, spectrum, plan eligibility, emergency handling and the transition between terrestrial and satellite paths. That is why a carrier’s current device and service page is more useful for a purchase decision than a satellite-count headline.

Bottom line for a buyer in 2026
AST SpaceMobile is the more explicitly broadband-oriented proposition in the cited descriptions: it targets calls, video, streaming, apps, messaging and downloads through ordinary phones, with satellite and tower integration. Its coverage and satellite-count statements remain rollout expectations, and its current handset matrix and pricing are not supplied.
Starlink Direct to Cell has a documented February 2025 commercial messaging launch with T-Mobile in the United States and One NZ in New Zealand, using partner LTE networks and 4G LTE phones. That dated announcement does not establish the complete 2026 feature set, current prices or coverage in another carrier market.
Make the decision in this order: participating carrier, exact feature, exact phone, coverage continuity and plan cost. Until those five items are confirmed for your location, neither service should be treated as a universal replacement for terrestrial mobile coverage.
