AST SpaceMobile Price Target Cut 45% as SpaceX Competition Weighs on Outlook

Piper Sandler cut its reported AST SpaceMobile (NASDAQ: ASTS) price target from $98 to $54 and downgraded the stock from Overweight to Neutral on October 13, 2026. The $44 reduction is about 45%, close to half. The reported reasons were uncertainty about the pace of launches in 2026–27 and SpaceX’s expanding direct-to-cell ambitions—not proof that SpaceX caused a specific move in ASTS shares.

What changed in Piper Sandler’s view?

Investing.com, in a Reuters-credited report that disclosed AI assistance and editorial review, said Piper Sandler lowered its AST SpaceMobile target to $54 from $98 and changed its rating from Overweight to Neutral on October 13, 2026. The original Piper research note was not available to independently verify, so the target and rationale should be understood as reported analyst views.

A price target is an analyst’s estimate, not a guaranteed future share price or a consensus figure. The report does not establish what ASTS was trading at when the action was published, and a target change is not itself evidence that the stock fell by a particular amount.

Why did the analyst cut the target?

Launch pace and deployment

The reported concern is that AST may deploy satellites more slowly than previously expected during 2026–27. That matters because the company needs to manufacture and launch spacecraft before it can expand service availability and translate partner relationships into commercial use. Any delay could push out the timing of network buildout and revenue.

AST had earlier described a multi-partner launch strategy and said in May 2026 that its network deployment target for 2026 was approximately 45 satellites in orbit. That was a forward-looking company target, not an achieved result. Its Q2 2026 update subsequently reported 13 spacecraft in orbit and preparation for beta service with selected strategic partners.

SpaceX’s direct-to-cell plans

The Investing.com report said SpaceX’s direct-to-cell ambitions could create pressure through competition for launch availability, pricing, and mobile-network-operator relationships. These are plausible channels of competitive impact, but they are not established outcomes. The same report also noted that SpaceX’s activity could increase mobile operators’ interest in AST as a partner.

“The SpaceX curse” is therefore a headline framing, not a proven causal explanation for ASTS performance. The available reporting confirms the analyst’s stated concern; it does not show that SpaceX caused a particular share-price move or that AST has lost launch access, partners, or pricing power.

Measure Company-reported figure How to read it
Spacecraft in orbit 13, reported in the Q2 2026 update Shows deployment to date; beta service was being prepared with selected strategic partners.
Mobile-network-operator partners More than 60, with coverage of over 3 billion subscribers Company-reported partner reach, not paying users, active service coverage, or adoption.
Q2 2026 revenue $31.5 million Revenue reported for that quarter, not a full-year run rate.
FY2026 revenue guidance $150 million–$200 million Company guidance, not realized revenue.
Aggregate contracted-revenue backlog Approximately $1.30 billion A reported backlog; it does not mean that amount has already been collected or recognized as revenue.
Pro forma cash, cash equivalents, and restricted cash More than $3.7 billion as of June 30, 2026 Reported financial resources that do not eliminate the cost and execution risks of network deployment.

AST also reported that an in-orbit Block 1 BlueBird satellite demonstrated peak data speed of 98.9 Mbps in its Q1 2026 results. That is a company-reported demonstration, not an independent measure of a commercial service customers can routinely expect.

The investment case depends on execution, not just reach

The reported figures support competing interpretations. The bullish case points to partner breadth, beta preparation, reported revenue and backlog, substantial pro forma cash, and the company’s stated use of multiple launch providers. These are signs of commercial and operational progress, but they do not by themselves establish a fully deployed service or sustained customer demand.

The main body of the first-stage rocket is precision aluminum alloy tube, and the rest of the rocket materials are made of high-quality imported resin-with excellent laser forming ability and long-lasting preservation

The cautious case centers on the steps still required: manufacturing and launching enough spacecraft, completing regulatory and integration work, finalizing commercial agreements, and demonstrating service adoption and viable pricing. Guidance and backlog remain distinct from recognized revenue, while a large cash balance does not remove operating costs or the possibility that execution takes longer than planned.

AST’s SEC-filed Q2 2026 materials caution: “AST SpaceMobile cautions readers not to place undue reliance upon any forward-looking statements, which speak only as of the date made.” That warning is relevant to deployment targets and guidance as well as expectations about future commercial performance.

What the target cut does—and does not—tell investors

  • It does tell you that one analyst, as reported on October 13, 2026, reduced a target by $44 and moved the rating from Overweight to Neutral.
  • It identifies risks to watch: launch timing and direct-to-cell competition, including possible effects on launch availability, pricing, and operator strategy.
  • It does not establish a consensus valuation, a guaranteed share-price destination, or that SpaceX caused ASTS shares to rise or fall.
  • It does not negate AST’s reported operating and financial progress; it puts execution and competition risks alongside that progress.

For readers assessing the news, the key distinction is between reported milestones and future outcomes. AST’s Q2 update supplies current company-reported operating and financial context; the analyst target is a dated opinion; and the SpaceX angle remains a set of potential competitive mechanisms rather than a demonstrated cause.
