AST SpaceMobile’s closest like-for-like competitors are Starlink Direct to Cell and Lynk: all are pursuing satellite links to ordinary mobile phones through partnerships with terrestrial operators. Globalstar is an important satellite-connectivity alternative, but its established service uses a traditional mobile-satellite-service model and is not identical to AST’s approach. Amazon’s planned combination with Globalstar could make it a future direct-to-device rival. Skylo, Eutelsat/OneWeb, Iridium and Viasat/Inmarsat belong in the wider satellite and non-terrestrial-network (NTN) landscape, yet they should be called direct AST competitors only where their phones, spectrum, service and commercial availability actually match.
What “satellite-to-cell” means
Satellite-to-cell is an umbrella term, not one standardized product. It can describe a satellite acting like a cell tower for an ordinary smartphone, a service that connects a dedicated satellite communicator, or a hybrid NTN system that uses a carrier’s network and satellite capacity together.

Direct-to-device using mobile-operator spectrum
In the model most often compared with AST SpaceMobile, a satellite connects directly to an unmodified phone. The operator supplies spectrum or network integration, while the satellite provides coverage where terrestrial towers are unavailable. The phone does not need a special antenna or a separate satellite handset, although the supported handset generation, carrier plan, software and geography still matter.
Traditional mobile-satellite service
Traditional mobile-satellite service (MSS) uses satellite spectrum and usually dedicated satellite terminals, phones or specialist equipment. The International Telecommunication Union describes Globalstar’s established model as MSS using L- and S-band spectrum. That is technically and commercially different from reusing a mobile operator’s terrestrial spectrum to reach a standard cellular phone.

Hybrid NTN and satellite backhaul
Other systems can provide messaging, emergency communication, Internet access or backhaul for terrestrial networks without offering a mass-market direct connection to every ordinary phone. A company can therefore be a satellite-connectivity competitor without being a direct AST substitute for a consumer who wants to keep using an existing smartphone.
AST SpaceMobile’s position
AST says its SpaceMobile network combines spectrum licensed by mobile-network-operator partners with AST’s own spectrum holdings. Its stated goal is to connect ordinary smartphones through purpose-built satellites. Public AST material also describes projected coverage, capacity and next-generation spacecraft. Those figures are company descriptions or targets, not independent measurements of the service a customer can receive today.
AST’s 2025 Form 10-K records a definitive commercial agreement with Verizon signed in October 2025 for direct-to-device service when needed by Verizon customers beginning in 2026. The filing establishes the agreement and planned start, but it does not prove that every Verizon customer can currently purchase the service, that it is available in every location, or that all planned capabilities have launched.

AST SpaceMobile competitors at a glance
| Provider or system | Model and spectrum distinction | Device assumption | Service and status evidence | How directly it competes with AST |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AST SpaceMobile | AST says it combines mobile-operator partner spectrum with its own holdings for a space-based cellular network. | Ordinary smartphones are the stated target; exact handset and carrier support varies. | Verizon commercial agreement signed in October 2025, with service planned when needed from 2026; deployment and coverage claims remain company targets unless independently verified. | Reference point for a direct-to-device comparison. |
| Starlink Direct to Cell | SpaceX and T-Mobile’s U.S. supplemental-coverage-from-space initiative was addressed in FCC order 24-136 (December 18, 2024). | Phone and plan compatibility must be confirmed through current carrier information. | FCC authorization is regulatory permission, not proof of universal retail availability or global coverage. | Direct competitor where its supported phones, services and geography overlap AST. |
| Lynk | Lynk describes a cellular-based satellite network connected through mobile-network operators. | Lynk says its service works with unmodified mobile devices. | Lynk says it has contracts with operators serving more than 50 countries; that is a company claim and does not mean every contract is a launched retail service. | Direct-to-device comparison, especially for messaging and basic cellular reach. |
| Globalstar | ITU characterizes its established network as traditional MSS using L/S-band spectrum. | Historically associated with satellite-specific devices and services rather than every ordinary phone. | Established satellite connectivity, but not the same architecture as AST’s mobile-spectrum approach. | Important alternative to satellite connectivity; only a direct AST rival for matching device and service offers. |
| Amazon Leo and Globalstar combination | Globalstar’s satellites, spectrum and expertise are intended to support future direct-to-device ambitions in Amazon Leo. | Future device and carrier requirements were not established in the cited announcement. | Amazon announced an acquisition of Globalstar on April 14, 2026. Treat the transaction and D2D launch as planned unless completion and service are independently confirmed. | Potential future direct competitor, not an automatically available AST substitute. |
| Skylo | Part of the broader NTN market identified by GSMA Intelligence; the exact spectrum and device model depend on the service. | Not stated here as a universal unmodified-phone service. | Assess each announced service separately rather than treating the company name as proof of AST-equivalent coverage. | Adjacent unless the specific offer matches AST’s phone and service model. |
| Eutelsat/OneWeb | Satellite broadband and NTN capabilities can serve different network and terminal roles. | Dedicated terminals or partner equipment may be involved; an AST-equivalent ordinary-phone offer is not established here. | Relevant to satellite connectivity, but not automatically a direct-to-smartphone competitor. | Usually adjacent, not like-for-like. |
| Iridium and Viasat/Inmarsat | Established satellite communications businesses with multiple device and network models. | Often specialist terminals or partner solutions; the exact product must be checked. | Useful alternatives for remote connectivity, emergency use or backhaul where their service fits. | Compete with the outcome of connectivity, not necessarily with AST’s ordinary-phone proposition. |
Starlink Direct to Cell versus AST SpaceMobile
Starlink Direct to Cell is the most visible AST comparison because both initiatives are designed to extend mobile connectivity from satellites to phones through carrier relationships. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission’s order 24-136, dated December 18, 2024, records the SpaceX and T-Mobile initiative and authorizes SpaceX to provide supplemental coverage from space in the United States.
Where the comparison is meaningful
- Both are intended to use satellites to reach phones beyond normal terrestrial coverage.
- Both depend on mobile-network operators, regulatory permissions and compatible customer plans rather than satellites alone.
- Both must be judged by actual services—such as messaging, emergency communication, voice or data—not by a satellite’s theoretical peak capacity.
Why an FCC authorization is not a service map
An FCC authorization establishes U.S. regulatory authority. It does not establish international availability, continuous coverage in every part of the United States, compatibility with every handset, or a consumer plan that anyone can buy. Current carrier and regulator pages are needed for the live status, supported devices, pricing and service limits.

Architecture and capacity questions
AST emphasizes a cellular network built around large next-generation satellites and spectrum arrangements with mobile operators. Starlink Direct to Cell is part of the Starlink constellation and the T-Mobile supplemental-coverage framework. A fair comparison should ask which spectrum is authorized in the relevant country, how many satellites are actually operating, what capacity is reserved for phones, and what a partner carrier sells—not which company advertises the larger headline number.

AST SpaceMobile versus Lynk
Lynk is another direct-to-device comparison. The FCC’s order 24-28, dated March 14, 2024, discussed Lynk’s proposed cellular-based satellite network and then-current company statements about mobile-network-operator contracts and messaging plans. Lynk’s own description says its service is intended for unmodified mobile devices and claims contracts with operators serving more than 50 countries.
Phone compatibility
Lynk’s unmodified-device claim addresses the basic hardware question: a customer is not expected to carry a dedicated satellite phone for the described service. It does not answer every operational question. Supported network bands, handset generations, carrier settings, line eligibility, sky visibility and the countries in which a partner has launched service still have to be checked.
Service capability
The cited FCC material discussed messaging plans and operator contracts. Do not convert that description into a claim that Lynk offers universal voice or broadband data. A company can demonstrate a satellite-to-phone link, sign an operator agreement and still be at a different milestone from a widely purchasable nationwide service.
Lynk–Omnispace merger plan
Lynk and Omnispace announced plans to merge on October 22, 2025. The announcement establishes a plan, not completion. Until a current corporate or regulatory notice confirms the transaction, describe it as a planned merger and evaluate each company’s service separately.
Is Globalstar a competitor to AST SpaceMobile?
Yes, but not in every sense. Globalstar competes for the broader need to communicate beyond terrestrial cellular coverage. Its established network is a traditional MSS system using L/S-band spectrum, according to the ITU. That heritage generally implies a different device, network and service model from AST’s stated use of mobile-operator spectrum to reach ordinary smartphones.

For a reader choosing a service, the decisive questions are whether the phone can connect without an accessory, whether the service includes only SOS and messaging or also voice and data, which carrier bills the customer, and where the service works. If the answer requires a dedicated satellite terminal, Globalstar is not a like-for-like replacement for AST’s ordinary-phone objective, even though both address remote connectivity.
Amazon Leo’s potential change to the comparison
Globalstar announced on April 14, 2026 that Amazon would acquire the company and that Globalstar satellites, spectrum and expertise would support future direct-to-device services in Amazon Leo. This could create a much closer AST competitor. The dated announcement alone does not establish that the acquisition has closed, that the planned satellite system is operating, or that a customer can buy an Amazon Leo phone service. Those milestones must be verified separately.
Where Skylo, Eutelsat/OneWeb and other systems fit
GSMA Intelligence’s 2026 comparison includes a wider set of satellite and NTN operators, including Skylo, Eutelsat/OneWeb, Iridium and Viasat/Inmarsat. Their inclusion in a market overview does not make all of them direct AST competitors.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse “adjacent” when the device model differs
A system using a dedicated terminal, a vehicle antenna, a specialist satellite phone or a network backhaul link may solve a customer’s connectivity problem while remaining technically different from direct-to-smartphone service. Calling it a direct competitor can mislead readers about equipment costs, portability and coverage.
Use “direct competitor” only after matching the offer
Call an adjacent provider a direct competitor only when the specific product reaches the same type of phone, provides a comparable service, operates in the same geography and is commercially available through a carrier or plan the reader can obtain. The company’s broad NTN label is not enough.
How satellite-to-cell offerings differ
1. Phone and device requirements
- Unmodified ordinary phone: the central promise made by AST and Lynk, subject to supported bands, software, carrier and geography.
- Specific phone generation: some services may require a newer modem or firmware even when no external antenna is needed.
- Dedicated communicator or satellite phone: common in traditional MSS offerings and a different purchasing decision.
- Dedicated terminal: used for higher-throughput broadband, vehicles, sites or backhaul rather than pocket-phone service.
2. What the service actually does
Separate emergency/SOS, location sharing, text messaging, voice, low-rate data and broadband data. A successful demonstration of one packet or message does not prove that voice calls or broadband browsing are available. Ask what is commercially supported, what is merely tested, and whether the carrier includes it in a normal plan or sells it as an add-on.

3. Spectrum and network architecture
AST describes a combination of mobile-operator spectrum and AST holdings. The ITU’s description of Globalstar highlights MSS spectrum in L and S bands. Other NTN systems may use different satellite, terrestrial or licensed-spectrum arrangements. Spectrum determines which regulators must authorize the service, which phones can listen and transmit, how interference is managed and whether a terrestrial carrier can integrate the link into its existing network.
4. Coverage and geography
Four different maps can be confused: a satellite’s orbital footprint, a country’s regulatory permission, a carrier partner’s network area and the locations where a customer can actually activate the service. Mountains, buildings, foliage, latitude, satellite elevation and network congestion can further reduce practical availability. Always check the country, carrier and plan rather than relying on a worldwide marketing map.
5. Carrier and ecosystem relationships
Direct-to-device services normally need a mobile operator to authenticate subscribers, allocate spectrum, route traffic and provide billing or support. A named partnership is evidence of a relationship, not proof that the service has launched. The same provider can have contracts in many countries while offering only a limited number of live services.
6. Capacity and deployment
Satellite count, launch cadence, antenna size, beam design and spectrum allocation affect how many simultaneous users can be served. A projected constellation or a target capacity should be labelled as a plan. It should not be presented as the capacity available to ordinary customers today.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the partnership numbers show—and what they do not
The Global mobile Suppliers Association reported 123 publicly announced satellite-to-cellphone operator partnerships worldwide, with 23 services launched, as of the end of June 2026. Its provider totals were 44 partnerships for AST SpaceMobile, 30 for Amazon Leo, 29 for Eutelsat Group and 21 for Lynk.

| Partnerships with a launched service | 23 | Only a minority of announced relationships had reached the reported launch milestone. |
| AST SpaceMobile partnerships | 44 | Partnership total; it does not measure coverage, capacity, revenue or customer count. |
| Amazon Leo partnerships | 30 | Partnership total; it does not prove the planned Globalstar-linked D2D service is operating. |
| Eutelsat Group partnerships | 29 | Partnership total across the group’s satellite/NTN activity, not automatically direct AST-equivalent service. |
| Lynk partnerships | 21 | Partnership total; it does not mean all contracted operators have launched retail messaging or other services. |
These figures are useful for showing how quickly the market is forming, but partnership volume is not a proxy for active coverage, available capacity, subscriber numbers or financial performance.

How to check whether a service is usable for you
- Start with your country. Confirm that the relevant regulator permits the service and that the provider names your country, not merely a neighboring market or a global footprint.
- Identify the carrier relationship. Look for your mobile operator, roaming arrangement or an explicit activation path. A satellite company’s partnership elsewhere does not automatically extend to your SIM.
- Check the exact phone. Record the model, modem generation, supported bands and operating-system version. “Unmodified phone” does not mean every phone.
- Read the service list. Determine whether the plan supports SOS, location, text, voice, low-rate data or broadband. Treat demonstrations and trials separately from retail features.
- Check outdoor-use conditions. Direct satellite links generally need a reasonably clear view of the sky. Indoor, underground, urban-canyon and heavily wooded locations can behave differently from an open-field test.
- Confirm billing and limits. Check whether the feature is included, an add-on, limited to emergencies, capped by messages or subject to congestion and fair-use rules.
- Verify the date. Regulatory orders, merger announcements and constellation plans age quickly. Recheck the carrier and regulator pages before relying on a launch or availability statement.
Common mistakes when comparing AST competitors
- Treating an announcement as a launch: a memorandum, contract, test or planned merger is not a purchasable service.
- Equating regulatory permission with coverage: an FCC authorization is geographically and operationally specific.
- Using peak speed as the comparison: advertised or projected capacity may not describe an ordinary customer’s experience.
- Assuming every satellite system reaches a normal phone: many services require a communicator, satellite phone or external terminal.
- Counting partnerships as customers: the GSA totals measure public announcements and reported launches, not subscriber or revenue performance.
- Ignoring carrier integration: the same satellite may be available through one operator and unavailable to another in the same country.
- Calling every NTN provider a direct rival: compare the actual handset, service, spectrum, geography and commercial status first.
Which competitor matters for each use case?
If you want to keep your existing smartphone
Focus first on AST, Starlink Direct to Cell and Lynk, because AST’s description, the FCC’s Starlink and Lynk materials, and Lynk’s own description associate these providers with direct-to-device or unmodified-phone approaches. Then narrow the choice by your carrier, country, supported handset and the feature you need.
If you need emergency or occasional messages
Compare the service’s actual SOS and messaging workflow, not its broadband ambitions. Confirm whether emergency access is available without a paid plan, how location is transmitted, whether messages queue until a satellite pass and which emergency center receives them.
If you need voice or broadband data
Do not infer those capabilities from a messaging demonstration. Look for a current carrier specification that names voice or data, states the supported phone or terminal and explains expected limitations. A dedicated satellite terminal may be more appropriate when sustained throughput is the priority.

If you work in remote areas with specialist equipment
Globalstar, Iridium, Viasat/Inmarsat, Eutelsat/OneWeb or another adjacent provider may fit better if the service is designed around a dedicated communicator, vehicle or site terminal. The correct comparison is reliability, coverage, hardware and operating cost—not whether the provider uses the phrase satellite-to-cell.
What to watch in the market
The competitive map will change as constellations launch, carrier agreements convert into retail services and corporate transactions close. Two dated developments are especially important: the planned Lynk–Omnispace merger announced October 22, 2025, and Amazon’s announced acquisition of Globalstar on April 14, 2026. Neither announcement, by itself, proves a completed transaction or a live consumer D2D product.
Regulatory decisions will also shape the market. Spectrum that works for a mobile operator in one country may require a different authorization elsewhere. The service a customer sees can therefore change by nation even when the satellite constellation is the same.
Bottom line
Starlink Direct to Cell and Lynk are the clearest current comparisons for AST SpaceMobile’s ordinary-phone, carrier-integrated ambition. Globalstar is a substantial satellite-connectivity alternative with a different MSS heritage; its planned role in Amazon Leo could make it a closer D2D competitor later. Skylo, Eutelsat/OneWeb, Iridium and Viasat/Inmarsat are relevant to the broader NTN market, but only a specific product that matches AST on phone, service, geography and commercial status should be labelled a direct competitor. Before choosing, verify the carrier, handset, supported feature and live availability in your country.
