Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The key difference is what happens after a check fails: a hard assertion normally stops the current test path, while a soft verification records or collects the failure and lets later checks run. But Selenium WebDriver itself does not define a universal verify command or assertion behavior. Those semantics come from the test tool or framework you use.
Does Selenium WebDriver have both assert and verify commands?
No. WebDriver controls a browser; it does not provide a testing framework’s comparisons, pass/fail assertions, or reporting. Selenium’s components guide says WebDriver “does not know a thing about testing” and recommends using an assertion library and test runner when writing tests. Selenium components documentation
The terms are often associated with older Selenium terminology and Selenium IDE. In Selenium IDE, an assert command is a hard check, while a verify command is a soft check. Do not assume those command names or behaviors are built into every WebDriver language binding.
What happens when each kind of check fails?
| Check type | On failure | Useful when | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hard assertion | Typically fails the test and interrupts the current execution path. Exact behavior depends on the framework. | A prerequisite or critical invariant has failed, making later actions meaningless, unsafe, or misleading. | Independent checks later in the test may not run. |
| Soft verification / soft assertion | Records or collects the failure while allowing later checks to run. Selenium IDE documents its verify commands as soft assertions: the test continues even if one fails. Selenium IDE commands | Several independent conditions should be checked in one run to give a broader diagnostic picture. | Continuing does not by itself guarantee a clear final failure summary; the tool or framework must collect and report failures. |
How should you choose?
- Use a hard assertion for a dependency. If a page did not load, a required control is absent, or a critical state is wrong, stop before later browser actions would produce misleading results.
- Use soft checks for independent outcomes. For example, if a page has several separately testable labels or links, collecting multiple failures can make one run more informative.
- Check the framework’s exact semantics. “Verify” is not a universal WebDriver rule. Use the documentation for the specific framework and soft-assert facility, including how collected failures must be reported.
A framework-specific example: TestNG in Java
TestNG’s Assert API documents that a failed assertion throws AssertionError. This is a TestNG behavior, not a Selenium WebDriver rule. TestNG 7.9.0 Assert API

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
import org.testng.Assert;
import org.testng.annotations.Test;
public class LoginTest {
@Test
public void loginPageHasExpectedTitle() {
String title = driver.getTitle();
Assert.assertEquals(title, "Sign in");
// If the assertion fails, TestNG throws AssertionError;
// subsequent statements in this test method do not run.
}
}
For multiple checks that should continue after individual failures, use the soft-assert mechanism supported by your chosen framework and follow its collection and reporting requirements. Do not infer a particular API or lifecycle from Selenium IDE’s verify command.
Where to find assertion support for your language
Selenium’s testing guidance points users toward language-appropriate test runners and assertion libraries, including JUnit and TestNG for Java; pytest and unittest for Python; NUnit and MSTest for .NET; RSpec and Minitest for Ruby; Jest and Mocha for JavaScript; and Kotest for Kotlin. Choose the framework used by your project, then consult its current documentation for hard- and soft-assertion behavior. Selenium test-framework guidance

Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a page for a test, report, or agent workflow rather than control a browser directly, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is not a replacement for WebDriver assertions or test-framework pass/fail logic.
