Assassin’s Creed Heredis: What to Know About the Series Before You Play

Heredis: Echoes of the Past is a live stage show connected to Assassin’s Creed, not a new video game. Ubisoft says it blends acrobatics, parkour, theatre and history—and that you do not need to know the games to enjoy it. If you are considering playing the series, there is no single required starting point: choose by release order, historical setting, story continuity or the style of gameplay you want.

What is Assassin’s Creed Heredis?

Heredis: Echoes of the Past is described by Ubisoft as “a new, wholly original live show with Assassin’s Creed.” Created by 7 Fingers Troupe, it follows a young man travelling across history to find his lost father, using acrobatics, parkour and theatre alongside historical elements. It is a stage production, not an installment in the video-game series. Ubisoft’s August 26, 2026 franchise article says prior knowledge of the games is not needed to enjoy the show.

What kind of series is Assassin’s Creed?

Ubisoft’s guide to playing the games in order describes a franchise of more than 18 games, spanning different historical periods and protagonists. Individual games tell distinct stories, while the franchise also has an overarching narrative that connects historical events with a modern-day frame. Settings range from the Third Crusade and Renaissance Italy to the American Revolution, the Caribbean, Victorian London, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Viking-era England and ninth-century Baghdad.

Across the series, stealth, parkour and historical exploration recur, but the balance changes from game to game. Some entries focus on climbing and planned assassinations; others put more emphasis on broad exploration and open-ended combat. Ubisoft Montréal’s account of the evolution of Assassin’s Creed describes this shift from the franchise’s action-adventure origins toward role-playing elements.

Where should you start playing?

There is no source-backed universal best first game. The original is the release-order starting point, but a newcomer can also choose an entry for its setting or gameplay. Use these distinctions to make the choice:

Starting approach What it offers What to keep in mind
Release order Begin with Assassin’s Creed (2007), then continue to Assassin’s Creed II (2009), Brotherhood and Revelations. The original introduces Desmond Miles in the modern-day framing story and Altaïr during the Third Crusade. The early games establish connections that continue across entries.
A setting that interests you Choose among periods such as Renaissance Italy, the Caribbean, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece or ninth-century Baghdad. Ubisoft’s guide documents these settings, but does not rank them as the best entry point.
Story continuity Start with an entry whose protagonist’s story you want to follow. For Ezio Auditore da Firenze, that means Assassin’s Creed II, followed by Brotherhood and Revelations. Some games continue a protagonist’s story; others introduce a different lead and period. Release order is the clearest route through the franchise’s broader development.
Gameplay emphasis Look for the style that sounds appealing, from climbing, stealth and assassinations to broader exploration and more open-ended combat. Gameplay varies across entries; the series should not be treated as if every game plays the same way.

The original: the release-order beginning

Assassin’s Creed (2007) sets Altaïr’s historical story during the Third Crusade in 1191, in Damascus, Acre and Jerusalem, alongside the modern-day story of captive Desmond Miles. Ubisoft’s guide highlights climbing, parkour and assassinations. It is the natural choice if you want to see where the series begins.

Ezio’s story: a connected early trilogy

Assassin’s Creed II (2009) introduces Ezio Auditore da Firenze in Renaissance Italy and expands the conspiracy narrative and player abilities. Brotherhood and Revelations continue his story, making these games a clear option if following one protagonist matters more to you than beginning with the franchise’s first release.

Choosing for a setting or play style

If a particular historical period is the main draw, use Ubisoft’s guide to find an entry set there. If you mainly want stealth and parkour, or would rather explore a broader world and engage in more open-ended combat, compare each game’s description before choosing. These are practical selection criteria, not an official ranking of which game newcomers should play first.

No. Ubisoft explicitly says the show can be enjoyed without prior knowledge of the games. Its story premise and stage form are presented as an original live production, so playing a specific title is not required preparation.
