The ASRock X870E Challenger WiFi White is a feature-rich ATX AM5 motherboard for builders who want USB4, 5GbE wired networking, Wi-Fi 7 and four M.2 sockets without moving into a more expensive board tier. Its main trade-offs are less polished BIOS support, 160 MHz Wi-Fi 7, and a memory-compatibility issue in Tom’s Hardware’s test setup. It is worth considering if those connectivity features matter more to you than top-tier benchmark results, but choose DDR5 from ASRock’s memory QVL and verify the exact White SKU and local price before buying.
What the review says—and who should consider this board
Tom’s Hardware’s review, published September 28, 2026, praised the board’s capable power delivery and extensive fast USB connectivity, including USB4. The outlet called it one of the best-equipped X870E options under $230, while also reporting average-to-below-average results across most tests and listing a BIOS that needed a refresh among its drawbacks. That is the review’s assessment of its sample and test methodology, not a guarantee of how another system will perform. Read the Tom’s Hardware review.

This board suits a white AM5 build where rear USB-C connectivity, faster-than-gigabit Ethernet and multiple M.2 drives are priorities. It is a less compelling pick if you want a particularly polished BIOS experience, integrated RGB lighting, or benchmark performance that clearly leads competing boards. Its restrained white design has heatsinks but no integrated RGB lighting.

USB4, Wi-Fi 7 and 5GbE: the practical strengths
USB4 and front-panel expansion
The two rear USB4 Type-C ports are the board’s standout connectivity feature for external storage and other high-bandwidth peripherals. The board also has a front USB 3.2 Gen2x2 Type-C header, provided the case has a compatible front-panel port. Tom’s Hardware notes that USB4 can carry video from supported CPU embedded graphics; that capability depends on the processor and display setup.
Wired and wireless networking
5GbE gives a compatible wired network a higher link-speed ceiling than standard gigabit Ethernet, although actual transfers depend on the rest of the network. The onboard wireless module supports Wi-Fi 7, but Tom’s Hardware identifies its channel width as 160 MHz. ASRock specifies Windows 11 support for the Wi-Fi 7 module and cautions that 6 GHz operation depends on regional regulation and software updates. Wi-Fi generation alone therefore does not establish the available bands or real-world speed in every location.
Memory compatibility deserves attention
ASRock lists four DDR5 slots, a maximum capacity of 256 GB and support up to DDR5-8200+ (OC). The maximum overclocked memory speed is not a promise that every processor and kit will run at that rate: ASRock says profile support varies by configuration and directs buyers to its memory QVL.

In Tom’s Hardware’s testing, its Kingston kit was not officially supported and did not work after the reviewer enabled its XMP/DOCP profile. The reviewer switched to a secondary DDR5-6000 kit and recommended choosing memory from the QVL. This is a specific test-kit result, not evidence that all Kingston kits—or all XMP/DOCP profiles—will fail. For a lower-risk build, check the exact memory kit against the QVL and be prepared to use default settings or adjust memory configuration if a profile is unstable.

- Flagship AMD AM5 Overclocking Platform: Built for extreme performance, supporting AMD Ryzen 9000, 8000, and 7000 Series processors on the premium X870E chipset.
- Extreme Power Design: Features a massive 22+2+1 phase VRM with 110A Smart Power Stage (SPS) for uncompromising stability and power delivery for the highest overclocks.
- Dual PCIe 5.0 Graphics: Equipped with two PCIe 5.0 x16 slots, offering the maximum available bandwidth for next-generation graphics cards and future expansion.
- Cutting-Edge Connectivity: Includes two rear USB4 Type-C ports (up to 40 Gbps) and two front-panel USB 3.2 Gen2x2 Type-C headers for ultimate peripheral speed.
- Blazing-Fast Storage: Provides two PCIe Gen5x4 M.2 slots and two PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 slots for the world's fastest NVMe SSDs, plus SATA support.
The review also suggested the board might perform better with QVL-listed memory and tighter secondary and tertiary timings. That is the reviewer’s assessment, not a separately established result for every supported kit.
Expansion and storage depend partly on the CPU
The headline layout offers a Gen5 graphics slot, four M.2 sockets and two SATA ports, but those labels do not mean every supported AM5 processor exposes identical bandwidth. ASRock notes that CPU family can lower the primary slot’s or M.2 sockets’ generation or width. Check the official specification page for the processor-specific lane configuration before planning around a particular Gen5 link or simultaneous device setup.
The chipset PCIe 3.0 slot is physically x16 length but operates at up to x2, so it should not be mistaken for a full-bandwidth x16 slot. For storage, ASRock lists one Gen5 x4 and three Gen4 x4 M.2 sockets; its board design includes heatsinks, with tool-less installation promoted by the manufacturer. Confirm the lane behavior for the chosen CPU and devices if your build depends on a specific slot configuration.

Tom’s Hardware’s downsides include a BIOS it said needed a refresh and a lack of AI features. For troubleshooting and setup, the outlet reports seven fan headers, four ARGB headers, a four-LED POST status checker, BIOS Flashback and Clear CMOS buttons. Those features can help when diagnosing boot or configuration issues, though they do not remove the need to verify memory and CPU compatibility.

The white appearance and heatsinks make the board a plausible fit for a light-colored build, while the absence of onboard RGB keeps the look comparatively understated. If lighting is important, plan for compatible case or component lighting and use the ARGB headers.
Price, availability and what to compare
Tom’s Hardware displayed an Amazon price of $229.99 when its review page was consulted, alongside retailer listings from Walmart, Newegg and Best Buy. That is a dated listing snapshot, not a current or guaranteed price. ASRock cautions that the model may not be sold worldwide, and the review page’s product naming also includes a non-White model. Check the exact X870E Challenger WiFi White SKU, seller, region, stock and current price before ordering.
When comparing it with the Gigabyte X870E Eagle WiFi7, MSI X870E Gaming Plus MAX WiFi or Asus TUF Gaming X870E-Plus WiFi7, compare the exact local price and availability alongside rear and front USB speeds, Ethernet, Wi-Fi channel width, M.2 generations and lane sharing, audio codec, VRM thermals under comparable loads, memory QVL coverage and BIOS recovery features. The review’s retailer prices are snapshots, so they should not be treated as current offers. Tom’s Hardware firmware and test-system details and its benchmark and final analysis provide additional context for its findings.
