ASML’s October 14, 2026 results show China sales accelerating sharply: sales to China rose 109% quarter over quarter, lifting China’s share of ASML machine sales from 14% in Q2 to 23% in Q3. ASML nevertheless expects China to account for about one-fifth of its total 2026 sales.
The surge makes China commercially important to ASML even as Washington presses the Netherlands for tighter controls on exports of less advanced chipmaking machinery. Those policy discussions affect the durability and mix of future sales, not the Q3 revenue already reported.

ASML’s Q3 results in context
ASML Holding N.V. reported €11.7 billion in Q3 2026 net sales and €5.0 billion in net income on October 14, 2026. The previous quarter produced €9.3 billion in net sales and €2.9 billion in net income.

| China’s share of machine sales | 14% | 23% | Up 9 percentage points |

The 109% figure is a comparison with Q2, not a year-over-year growth rate. ASML did not report a euro amount for China sales in the figures available here, so the percentage describes momentum rather than the absolute size of that business.
#1 Best Overall
Why 23% and 20% are not contradictory
23% refers to Q3 machine sales
The 23% figure measures China’s share of ASML’s machine sales during Q3. These are industrial lithography systems sold to semiconductor manufacturers. It is a quarterly sales-mix measure for machines, not a statement that 23% of every category of ASML revenue came from China.
About 20% refers to full-year total sales
ASML expects China to represent about 20% of its total sales for all of 2026. Total sales cover the company’s overall reported business, while the 23% figure uses machine sales in one quarter as its denominator. Different periods and denominators explain why the percentages should not be directly compared as if they measured the same thing.
As a simple scale illustration, 20% of ASML’s €44–45 billion full-year 2026 sales guidance would be roughly €8.8–9.0 billion. That is an arithmetic implication of the company’s rounded expectation, not a separately reported China revenue figure.
What drove the quarter’s China jump?
The published results establish the sequential increase but do not identify one customer, product model, shipment schedule, or regulatory waiver as the sole cause. The safest reading is that China’s purchasing and delivery mix was unusually strong in Q3. A single quarter also cannot establish that a 109% increase will continue at the same rate.
Because lithography systems are high-value industrial equipment, quarterly sales can move sharply when deliveries are concentrated in one period. China’s higher machine-sales share therefore signals substantial Q3 demand, while the full-year forecast indicates that ASML expects China’s contribution to normalize to about one-fifth of company-wide sales across 2026.
What export controls change
The reported Q3 result is already in the books
Washington was pressing the Netherlands for tighter controls on exports of less advanced chipmaking machinery to China while this commercial surge was taking place. That policy pressure does not retroactively change ASML’s €11.7 billion Q3 sales or the 23% machine-sales share.
Future shipments face policy risk
The controls question is about which systems ASML can ship later, under what licenses and with what product mix. The Q3 numbers show that restrictions had not stopped China-related sales in the quarter being reported. They do not prove that future rules will leave the current level of access unchanged.
There is no announcement in the cited Q3 figures that all ASML sales to China have been halted. Nor do the figures establish how any eventual Dutch or US measures would affect individual customers, machine categories or delivery timing. Those details would be needed before quantifying a policy impact.

ASML guided to €44–45 billion in total net sales for full-year 2026. China’s expected 20% share therefore remains material to that outlook, even though it is lower than the 23% Q3 share of machine sales because the measures use different denominators.
The company also said planned supply for 2027 and 2028 will not fully satisfy customer demand:
“With such strong visibility and an order book momentum that continues to increase quarter on quarter this year, we now expect that our supply as currently planned for both 2027 and 2028 will not fully meet the demand of our customers.”

That statement points to strong commercial demand across ASML’s customer base. It does not mean every customer or market will receive machines on schedule: export rules can still determine where available systems may be delivered. ASML therefore faces two opposing forces—an order book that exceeds planned capacity and a regulatory environment that may constrain part of its China business.
Quick Recap
What readers should take from the numbers
- China is a meaningful market: a roughly 20% expected share of 2026 total sales is large enough to affect company results.
- The Q3 increase is sequential: 109% compares with Q2 and should not be treated as an annual growth rate.
- The 23% figure is narrower: it covers Q3 machine sales, whereas the 20% expectation covers all 2026 sales.
- Demand and regulation are moving in opposite directions: ASML reports demand beyond planned 2027–2028 supply while governments consider tighter China export controls.
- This is an industrial-equipment story: ASML sells lithography systems used in semiconductor manufacturing, not consumer electronics.
