The “$13 billion” headline is a rounded-dollar framing; ASML’s October 14 release reports the results in euros. The company also says customer demand now exceeds the lithography supply it has planned for 2027 and 2028, prompting an investigation into additional 2028 capacity.
What drove ASML’s record quarter?
ASML supplies the lithography hardware, software and services chipmakers use to print integrated-circuit patterns on silicon wafers. Its systems are industrial capital equipment, not consumer products. Demand rose as semiconductor manufacturers expanded plans for AI-related logic and memory capacity.

Chief Executive Officer Christophe Fouquet said customers are increasing their short- and medium-term equipment forecasts mainly because they expect AI investment to be both larger and longer-lasting than previously anticipated. Some customers are already discussing orders for 2029 and 2030, giving ASML visibility beyond the current production cycle.

The company said its record sales were toward the high end of guidance and reflected strong execution during its equipment ramp-up.
Q3 results compared with Q2
| Measure | Q3 2026 | Q2 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Total net sales | €11.662 billion | €9.326 billion |
| Gross profit | €6.700 billion | Not stated in the release |
| Gross margin | 57.5% | 54.0% |
| Net income | €4.960 billion | €2.918 billion |
| New lithography systems sold | 113 | 86 |
| Used lithography systems sold | 8 | 5 |
| Installed Base Management sales | €3.289 billion | Not stated in the release |
Installed Base Management revenue, which covers services and productivity upgrades for equipment already operating at customer sites, reached €3.289 billion and came in above guidance. ASML attributed that performance to demand for upgrades that increase wafer output from the installed fleet.
Is AI demand causing a lithography-machine shortage?
ASML’s statement describes a supply-demand shortfall in its forward plans, rather than a claim that every customer is immediately unable to obtain a machine. The company says supply currently planned for both 2027 and 2028 will not fully satisfy customer demand. That conclusion follows stronger order-book momentum each quarter in 2026 and customer forecasts that extend into 2029 and 2030.

Lithography capacity is a constraint because each new chip-production facility needs scanners and related systems before wafers can be processed at volume. EUV (extreme ultraviolet) tools are used for the most demanding layers of advanced chips, while DUV (deep ultraviolet) systems remain important across mature and leading-edge production. A manufacturer can announce an AI-chip factory, but its output depends on securing and installing the required lithography fleet, along with the rest of the fab equipment and process infrastructure.
ASML can also add wafer capacity without selling an entirely new scanner by upgrading productivity on systems already installed. Those upgrades are one reason the company highlighted Installed Base Management sales alongside new-equipment shipments.
Why is ASML investigating more capacity for 2028?
ASML had previously communicated a 30% increase in 2027 low-NA EUV and DUV immersion capacity, with a further 30% increase being investigated for 2028. The latest release says that even the supply currently planned for 2027 and 2028 will not fully meet demand, so the company is examining ways to expand 2028 capacity beyond that previously communicated level.
What “capacity expansion” means here
- Manufacturing and supply-chain scale: more complete systems and critical modules must be produced, tested and delivered.
- Installed-base productivity: software, hardware and service upgrades can raise wafer output from machines already at customer fabs.
- Long planning horizons: decisions for 2028 capacity must be made well before equipment reaches a production line, so customer forecasts for 2029 and 2030 matter now.
The announcement is an investigation, not a guarantee that a specific number of additional systems will ship. It also does not mean all lithography types will expand at the same rate; the earlier 30% reference specifically concerned 2027 low-NA EUV and DUV immersion capacity.

What does ASML’s 2026 outlook mean?
| Period | Sales outlook | Gross-margin outlook |
|---|---|---|
| Q4 2026 | €14.2–15.2 billion | Approximately 57% |
| Full year 2026 | €44–45 billion | Approximately 56% |
The full-year range is guidance, not a reported result. It indicates that ASML expects a very strong fourth quarter after the €11.662 billion recorded in Q3, while allowing for the timing of system acceptances, customer schedules and the normal mix of equipment and services. The annual margin estimate is also below Q3’s 57.5%, showing that quarterly product mix and ramp costs can move profitability even when demand remains strong.
How important is ASML to AI-chip production?
ASML does not design or manufacture AI processors. Its importance comes earlier in the chain: lithography systems project circuit patterns onto wafers, enabling chipmakers to build the dense logic and memory structures used in AI accelerators and data-center systems. The company’s service organization and installed-base upgrades affect how much output existing fabs can obtain from their scanners.
Best Value
That position makes ASML’s order visibility a useful indicator of planned semiconductor-capacity investment, but it is not a direct measure of AI-chip sales. Actual chip availability also depends on fab construction, other process tools, advanced packaging, memory production, power and networking components, and customer demand.
Company context and what to watch next
ASML Holding N.V. is headquartered in Veldhoven, the Netherlands, employs more than 45,500 people and trades on Euronext Amsterdam and Nasdaq under the symbol ASML. The next important signals will be whether customer forecasts continue to rise, how much additional 2028 capacity the company ultimately approves, and whether productivity upgrades can supplement new-system shipments.
Quick Recap
- Watch the conversion of 2029–2030 customer interest into firm orders.
- Watch for a specific capacity target beyond the previously communicated 2028 plan.
- Watch the mix between EUV, DUV immersion, other systems and installed-base services, since it affects both output and margins.
- Watch whether the €14.2–15.2 billion Q4 guidance is achieved and how that affects the €44–45 billion full-year range.
