How the inflation report changed Fed expectations
Higher-than-expected inflation makes an imminent rate cut less likely because it suggests price pressures are proving more persistent. It can also raise the risk that policymakers will consider another increase if inflation remains above target. Fed-funds futures reflected that shift: the implied probability of a 25-basis-point hike at the Federal Reserve’s two-day meeting beginning 28 October rose to 31.6%, from 22.1% the previous day.
That probability is a market estimate, not a Federal Reserve commitment. It can move sharply when officials speak or when new economic data change the outlook.

Why higher rates hit technology and AI shares
Expected interest rates affect equity valuation through discount rates. When the rate used to value future cash flows rises, profits expected years ahead become less valuable today. Higher borrowing costs also make it more expensive to build data centers, buy equipment and finance fast-growing companies. Those effects are especially important for long-duration technology companies and capital-intensive artificial-intelligence infrastructure.

The report said investors were also focused on financing risks and the timing of initial public offerings for AI-related companies. Chris Weston, head of research at Pepperstone Group, said, “Asia faces another difficult session.” He added that KOSPI and Nikkei futures pointed to renewed technology weakness, with leveraged ETF flows and AI-infrastructure credit risk in focus.

JPMorgan analysts described the initial CPI reaction as the trigger but said technology was the main driver of the day’s selloff. They identified AI, financing risks and IPO timelines as central concerns. Those comments describe the market’s reported focus; they do not establish that inflation alone caused every move.
Why the KOSPI fell more than the Nikkei
The KOSPI’s 5.6% drop was much larger than the Nikkei 225’s 1.3% decline. The report linked the regional pressure mainly to technology and semiconductor exposure, which made South Korean shares particularly sensitive to a repricing of AI and hardware demand. When investors lower the value they assign to future growth or become more concerned about funding, markets with a heavy concentration of those companies can fall faster than broader benchmarks.

Leverage also matters during abrupt moves. The report specifically mentioned leveraged exchange-traded-fund flows and credit risk around AI infrastructure. Forced reductions in leveraged positions can amplify an initial decline, although the report did not quantify how much of the KOSPI move came from those flows.

The cross-asset reaction was mixed rather than a uniform rise in every rate-sensitive measure. Reuters/Business Standard reported the following levels and moves:

A falling Treasury yield during a stock selloff can reflect competing forces, including demand for government bonds, changing growth expectations or positioning. It does not by itself cancel the market’s higher perceived probability of a Fed hike.
What could move markets next
Traders identified several near-term tests for the new rate outlook:
- Federal Reserve speeches in Bangkok: Officials’ comments could reinforce or reduce the futures market’s 31.6% hike probability.
- US producer-price data: Another inflation measure could show whether September’s consumer-price surprise was isolated or part of a broader trend.
- US retail-sales data: Evidence of resilient consumer demand could affect expectations for growth, inflation and policy.
- TSMC’s third-quarter earnings: Results and guidance could provide a fresh read on semiconductor demand and whether AI-related investment is supporting hardware companies.
These releases may change both interest-rate expectations and the valuation investors place on technology and semiconductor shares. Index closes, futures probabilities, bond yields and currency rates can also differ from the intraday figures reported during the selloff.

What the selloff means for investors
- Do not treat a futures-implied hike probability as a guaranteed policy decision.
- Separate the direct inflation reaction from company-specific issues such as AI financing, IPO schedules and earnings guidance.
- Compare markets by technology and semiconductor exposure, sensitivity to US rates, and local catalysts such as currencies or employment data.
- Check whether a reported percentage is an intraday move or an official close before drawing longer-term conclusions.
The immediate message from 15 October was that a US inflation surprise can rapidly reprice global equities, with the greatest damage concentrated in markets and sectors whose valuations depend heavily on future growth and inexpensive financing.
