Asian Stocks Rise as Fed Rate-Hike Bets Recede; Dollar Slips

On October 5, 2026, Asian stocks opened higher and the US dollar edged down after weaker-than-expected US jobs data led markets to scale back expectations for another Federal Reserve rate increase. The moves were a dated snapshot from thin holiday trading—not a Fed decision or a live market update.

Why did stocks rise as the dollar fell?

Reuters reported that September US job growth slowed more than expected and payroll counts for the preceding two months were revised sharply lower. Investors responded by trimming bets on further Fed tightening. CME FedWatch pricing put the market-implied chance of an October rate increase at 22%, down from 64% a week earlier, according to Reuters on October 5, 2026. That probability reflected market pricing at the time, not an official Fed forecast or a commitment to pause.

Equities took support from the reduced rate-hike expectations, while the dollar softened modestly. The session was not a clean test of that relationship: trading was thin because of holidays in China, South Korea and Australia’s New South Wales, and Asian markets were also following Wall Street’s Friday moves.

Why the jobs report mattered to rate expectations

Investors had to weigh a weaker labor-market signal against other economic and market pressures. The payroll revisions added to the effect of slower September hiring, but Reuters did not provide the payroll totals or the revision amounts in its report. The data therefore support the direction of the market reaction, not a more precise account of how many jobs were gained or lost.

Jose Torres, senior economist at Interactive Brokers, said the revisions indicated that the US economy had lost jobs in two of the first nine months of the year and raised the risk of further losses. His remarks were an analyst’s interpretation of labor conditions, not a Federal Reserve statement. The market’s reduced estimate of an October hike likewise did not rule out future increases.

Why the dollar’s outlook was not one-way

Lower expectations for Fed tightening can weigh on a currency by reducing the relative return investors anticipate from assets denominated in it. Reuters also cited tighter policy elsewhere and the growing case for an October Fed pause as dollar headwinds. But the report described countervailing supports: stronger US growth relative to other economies and foreign demand for US securities.

Elias Haddad, global head of markets strategy at BBH, said those competing forces left US dollar risks “skewed to the upside.” That was an analyst view, not a prediction that the dollar had to rise. On October 5, the dollar was only modestly lower in the reported session.

Why Treasury yields did not simply fall

Yields initially dipped after the jobs data, Reuters reported, but had risen on Friday. By the October 5 snapshot they were little changed or slightly lower, with the 10-year yield at 5.2643% and the two-year at 4.8143%. The report also said global yields remained near multi-year highs amid fiscal concerns, heavy bond issuance and elevated energy costs—pressures that can counter the downward pull from expectations of less restrictive monetary policy.

Reuters described market technicals, including forced selling by hedge funds and real estate investment trusts, as a possible short-term obstacle to lower yields. Cedric Lam, senior investment strategist at Standard Chartered, said he did not expect an extended selloff and had initiated an opportunistic bullish idea on US 10-year government bonds. That was his positioning and outlook, not a guarantee of a bond rally.

What oil and gold added to the picture

Brent and US crude were both elevated in Reuters’ snapshot, while spot gold was quoted at $4,154.32 an ounce. Reuters linked elevated oil to reported Houthi attacks on Saudi Aramco sites; that is the report’s attribution. Higher energy costs were also part of the wider backdrop for global bond yields, so the session was shaped by more than the jobs release alone.
