The AP linked continuing oil-price swings to uncertainty about when the war with Iran would allow the global energy industry to return to normal. It did not establish that the announcement about Russian diesel was the cause of the price decline.
What Trump said about Russian diesel
The Associated Press reported that Trump said on social media Friday he had struck a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin for the United States to buy Russian diesel. As described in Trump’s announcement, Russia would provide more than 300,000 tons immediately, 500,000 tons in November, 1 million tons “immediately thereafter,” and another 3 million tons “within a short period of time.” The announcement’s wording does not specify a calendar date for the later deliveries.

Those quantities and timelines are claims attributed to Trump. The AP account does not independently confirm that the deal was implemented or that any diesel was delivered.
Why the announcement drew criticism
Lawmakers criticized the proposed purchase because it could conflict with U.S. efforts to restrict Russian oil and gas revenue that could support Russia’s war against Ukraine. The Associated Press reported that six senators from both parties urged the administration to reverse course.

The AP also described recently passed legislation directing substantial tariffs on leading importers of Russian oil or natural gas, subject to an exception under specified conditions. The reported account does not provide enough detail here to determine how that exception would apply to the announced diesel plan.

A preliminary University of Michigan consumer survey, as reported by the Associated Press in 2026, found that Americans expected inflation of 4.7% over the coming year. That was up from 4.6% a month earlier and 3.4% in February, before the war with Iran began. These are survey expectations, not measured inflation or a forecast that prices will rise by exactly those amounts.
