Asian Paints Share Price Falls for a Second Session: Is the Stock Still Expensive?

Asian Paints shares fell for a second straight session in market reports dated October 8, 2026. Univest put the stock at ₹2,320.05 after a cumulative 4.13% decline from a ₹2,420 reference price. Univest also says it has not established a company-specific cause, so the move is documented but its reason is not. On valuation, ET Now’s last-close snapshot for the same day shows a trailing P/E of 50.23. That is high in absolute terms, but the figure only means something once you know its date, its earnings window and what the company has been reporting.

What the October 8 price data shows

Two market sources published October 8, 2026 snapshots that do not match exactly. The table below lists both, so each figure can be quoted with its source and basis.

Source Date and basis Reference price Price reported Move reported
Univest report October 8, 2026; second consecutive session decline ₹2,420 ₹2,320.05 −4.13% cumulative over the two sessions
ET Now market page October 8, 2026; last-close values Not stated ₹2,311.60 Not stated

The two prices are about ₹8.45 apart. Neither source explains the gap, which may reflect different timestamps or data feeds. Until an exchange closing price for the same session is checked, treat ₹2,311.60 and ₹2,320.05 as two snapshots, not one confirmed close.

Why the shares are falling: what can and cannot be said

A decline across two sessions is a short window. It describes recent price action and does not establish a durable downtrend. Univest explicitly says it has not identified a company-specific catalyst, and no statement from Asian Paints management explaining the October move was found in the reports reviewed. Quarterly results, competition, input costs and broader market sentiment are all common explanations for stock moves, but none of them is supported for this episode by the sources. Attributing the fall to any one of them would be speculation.

Is the valuation high?

A trailing P/E of 50.23 means the stock price is about 50 times the earnings reported over the trailing twelve months. Read that number in three steps: what the price is, what the earnings window covers, and how the company’s earnings have been moving.

The P/E figure and its date

ET Now’s P/E is a trailing twelve-month figure, and its earnings window ends June 2026. It was labeled as a last-close value on October 8, 2026. The ratio will change when Asian Paints reports its next quarter, and it will also move with the share price. A reader who compares this P/E with a figure from another site should first confirm that both use the same price date, the same earnings window and the same consolidated or standalone basis.

What the other ratios add

The same ET Now snapshot reports a price-to-book ratio of 11.17, return on equity of 20.42%, debt-to-equity of 0.11 and a dividend yield of 1.14%. A rough cross-check is useful here. Dividing the price-to-book ratio by the return on equity gives about 55, close to the trailing P/E of 50. That suggests the two ratios rest on broadly similar earnings. The inverse of the P/E, the earnings yield, is about 2.0%. A high multiple of this size leaves little room for earnings disappointment.

What would justify a premium

A premium multiple depends on earnings continuing to grow. The reported figures for FY2025-26 and the first quarter of FY2026-27 show growth, which is the main argument for the premium, though one year of growth is not proof of a durable rate.

Consolidated metric (FY2025-26, year ended March 31, 2026) Amount Growth year on year
Revenue from operations ₹35,583.54 crore 4.95%
EBITDA ₹7,419.72 crore 12.78%
Profit before exceptional items and tax ₹6,161.05 crore 12.71%
Profit for the period ₹4,394.69 crore 18.46%

These figures come from Asian Paints’ FY2025-26 annual report. Profit for the period grew faster than revenue, and EBITDA grew faster than revenue as well. Dividing the reported EBITDA by revenue gives an EBITDA margin of about 20.9% for FY2025-26, compared with about 19.4% implied for the prior year. Those margins are calculated from the reported figures, not stated in the annual report.

Exceptional items should be kept separate from operating performance. The annual report records ₹157.61 crore of exceptional items for the year, made up of a ₹93.87 crore impairment of an intangible asset linked to White Teak and a ₹63.74 crore impact from the new labour code. Neither item reflects the core business trend, so they are excluded from the margin comparison above.

In the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Asian Paints reported consolidated net sales of ₹10,521.4 crore, up 17.9%, in its July 29, 2026 release. That is the strongest recent growth figure in the sources, but it covers one quarter.

What this article does not establish

This check does not include a verified comparison of Asian Paints’ P/E with its own history or with listed paint companies. A valuation view of the stock needs those comparisons, using the same provider, the same earnings basis and the same date for each company. Without them, the statement that the stock is expensive relative to the market or to peers is not supported here.

Dates to watch

  • July 29, 2026: Asian Paints released its Q1 FY2026-27 consolidated sales figure.
  • October 29, 2026: Asian Paints’ investor calendar lists Q2 and half-year results. The company describes the FY2026-27 timetable as tentative, so confirm the date before relying on it.
  • After the Q2 release: Recalculate the trailing P/E with the new earnings window and a fresh closing price.

How to run the check yourself

  • Record the price, the publisher and the timestamp together. Do not mix prices from different sources.
  • Confirm whether the P/E is trailing or forward, and whether earnings are consolidated or standalone.
  • Compare the company’s current multiple with its own history using the same provider and the same method.
  • Check exceptional items in the annual report or results release before judging operating growth.
  • Look for a company explanation of the price move before attributing it to results or sector factors.
  • Repeat the valuation after the October 29, 2026 results, because a new earnings window changes the ratio.

The Bottom Line

The two-session fall is a documented price move with no established cause, so it should not be read as a verdict on the business. The valuation is high on trailing earnings: a P/E of about 50 needs continued strong earnings growth to look reasonable, and the reported FY2025-26 and Q1 FY2026-27 growth supports that case for now, but a verified peer or historical comparison is still needed before calling the stock expensive or cheap. The next test is the tentative October 29, 2026 Q2 and half-year results.
