That was second behind China, which won 26 medals, including 16 golds. So “gold drought” describes disappointment about how few top-place finishes India converted—not a campaign without gold.

Why the “gold drought” label needs context
India did win three shooting golds, so the phrase is relative rather than literal. The reporting on the campaign focused on a perceived shortfall against expectations and on individual finals where a gold medal seemed within reach. That is an assessment of performance, not a separate statistical measure; a second-place finish remains a medal-winning result.
Hindustan Times reported five Indian individual shooting medals: Neeru Dhanda’s women’s trap gold; silver medals for Himanshu Singh in men’s 10m air rifle, Elavenil Valarivan in women’s 10m air rifle and Esha Singh in women’s 25m pistol; and Rudrankksh Patil’s bronze in men’s 10m air rifle. The standout gold: Neeru Dhanda in women’s trap
Neeru Dhanda won the women’s trap individual event. Akashvani described her victory as the first gold by an Indian shooter in women’s trap at the Asian Games in Japan. The result gave India a notable individual title in a campaign whose medal count leaned much more heavily toward silver and bronze. Akashvani News
Where India’s missed chances were most visible
Elavenil Valarivan’s 10m air rifle final
Hindustan Times identified Elavenil Valarivan’s women’s 10m air rifle final as a clear example: she conceded a lead and finished second, while her opponent set a Games record. Former rifle shooter Joydeep Karmakar said the gold had been available to both Elavenil and Rudrankksh Patil in their respective 10m air rifle finals, and attributed their losses to nerves. That is Karmakar’s interpretation, not a technical finding established by the results themselves.

Rifle and pistol results against expectations
Hindustan Times singled out rifle and pistol results as the campaign’s biggest disappointment. It also reported that Manu Bhaker did not win a medal and that Suruchi Singh earned a mixed-team bronze with Kamaljeet Singh but no individual medal. Other athletes with prior credentials—including Samrat Rana, Anjum Moudgil, Swapnil Kusale, Sift Kaur Samra and Palak Gulia—did not deliver the campaign that observers anticipated. Previous results can shape expectations, but they do not guarantee a podium at a particular Games.
The men’s 25m rapid-fire pistol close
Anish Bhanwala finished seventh in the men’s 25m rapid-fire pistol final, the closing event of India’s shooting campaign. India also won a team silver in 50m rifle 3 positions
India took silver in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions team event, behind China; Korea won bronze, according to the Asian Shooting Confederation’s Day 6 report. National coach Samaresh Jung said the outcome fell short of expectations and that the team would review its performance. National rifle high-performance coach Manoj Kumar defended the selection policy and stressed how narrow rifle margins can be. Ronak Pandit, the 25m pistol national coach, said coaches and athletes had trained with simulations and match scenarios, but that a shooter’s performance in a final cannot be dictated. These are attributed explanations and assessments; the reported results do not establish one cause for India’s medal distribution.

The overall result
India’s shooting team finished with 15 medals and second place in the discipline’s medal table. The campaign included a historic women’s trap gold, a team silver in men’s 50m rifle 3 positions and several other podiums. The “gold drought” framing reflects the contrast between that strong total and China’s much larger gold count, alongside finals that Indian shooters and commentators believed offered more chances to win the top prize.
