A Google AI Overview reportedly confused Cape Breton musician Ashley MacIsaac with another man who shared his surname and wrongly identified MacIsaac as a sex offender. After the Sipekne’katik First Nation encountered the false information, it cancelled a performance and later apologized. MacIsaac sued Google in 2026, but the case was discontinued before the allegations were tested in court.

What happened to Ashley MacIsaac?

MacIsaac, a Cape Breton fiddler and singer, learned in December 2025 that a Google AI Overview was identifying him as a sex offender. Global News reported that the summary drew on online material about a different man with the same surname. The original AI Overview is dynamic and is not preserved in the cited reports, so its exact wording cannot be independently verified from those accounts.

The Sipekne’katik First Nation, north of Halifax, cancelled a performance after the false information came to its attention. It later issued a public apology. Its spokesperson described the incident as mistaken identity caused by an AI error, rather than a reflection of MacIsaac. The reporting establishes one cancelled performance; it does not quantify lost income, how many people saw the summary, or any broader career impact.

MacIsaac was quoted as saying, “Google screwed up, and it put me in a dangerous situation.” The First Nation’s spokesperson said: “We deeply regret the harm this error caused to your reputation, your livelihood, and your sense of personal safety.” These statements were reported by The Globe and Mail and reproduced by Futurism on Dec. 28, 2025. Global News also reported the incident on Dec. 23, 2025.

How did Google respond?

Google Canada spokesperson Wendy Manton told Global News that the feature changes frequently and that Google uses examples of misinterpretation or missing context to improve its systems and may act under its policies. Her statement was: “When issues arise — like if our features misinterpret web content or miss some context — we use those examples to improve our systems, and may take action under our policies.” This describes Google’s general approach; it is not an admission of responsibility for what happened to MacIsaac.

Did Ashley MacIsaac sue Google?

Yes. MacIsaac filed a civil lawsuit in Ontario in February 2026, according to a Global News report updated May 4, 2026. The suit alleged that the AI Overview attributed several convictions and registry status to him. Those were allegations in a civil claim, not findings by a court.

What happened to the lawsuit?

CityNews, reporting for The Canadian Press, said on Aug. 19, 2026, that a notice of discontinuance had been filed on July 29, ending the case. The report says the claims were not tested in court and gives no reason for the discontinuance. The available reporting therefore does not establish a settlement, an admission by Google, or a judicial ruling clearing either side. See the Canadian Press report published by CityNews.

What can someone do if a Google result is wrong?

Google provides a Search Help form for reporting a problem. Its guidance distinguishes routes for certain content or product-policy issues from legal reporting routes. The form is general guidance: the cited sources do not say which route MacIsaac used, and submitting a report does not guarantee that a particular AI Overview will be removed.

Why this case matters for AI summaries

The reported mistake shows how a name match can connect a person to harmful information about someone else when an AI-generated summary draws on web material. In this case, reporting connects the error to a cancelled performance and a subsequent apology, but does not measure its total reach or financial consequences. The distinct responses—the organizer’s apology, Google’s stated product and policy approach, and the civil case that was later discontinued—should not be treated as equivalent forms of redress.
