Ashfield Hollow is using Steam Next Fest to challenge players to complete its free demo on the most punishing settings available. The Hardcore Survival Challenge requires a fresh run, fixed sandbox rules and 50 days of survival without a death. The four players with the highest zombie-kill totals will each receive a $25 Steam Gift Card.
How the Hardcore Survival Challenge works
The challenge is built around the free Ashfield Hollow demo on Steam. To enter, players must use the demo’s designated preset rather than creating a customized survival scenario.

- Start a new game in the Ashfield Hollow demo.
- Select the Hardcore Survival sandbox preset.
- Leave Permadeath enabled.
- Do not alter any of the preset’s settings.
- Survive all 50 in-game days without dying.
- Capture a screenshot of the final scorecard and submit it through the event form.
A death ends an eligible run because permadeath is mandatory. Changing the preset settings also breaks the challenge rules, so players should treat the default Hardcore Survival configuration as locked from the moment the run begins.

The challenge ends with Steam Next Fest on October 26, 2026. Because the cutoff is stated in Eastern Time, entrants elsewhere should convert 5:00 p.m. ET to their local time before submitting. The prize ranking is based on zombie kills among players who complete the full no-death run, not simply on the highest kill count from an incomplete attempt.

What is Ashfield Hollow?
Ashfield Hollow is a 2D post-apocalyptic survival life-sim RPG from BitQuest Studio. The story begins ten years after an outbreak, when the player wakes in Camp Ashfield with no memory. The long-term objective is not limited to fighting: players are expected to build a sustainable life while helping a damaged community endure.
The official Steam description summarizes that blend as “Build a life in the ruins,” combining survival, real-time combat, farming, crafting and fishing. The developer’s tagline is “Survive. Rebuild. Belong.”

Survival and combat
The survival loop includes encounters with infected enemies and hostile human survivors. Real-time combat makes positioning and timing part of the daily routine, while the Hardcore preset and permadeath rules turn every expedition into a risk calculation. A high kill total can improve a challenge ranking, but pursuing fights also increases the chance of ending an otherwise successful run.
Life-sim systems
Between dangerous trips, the demo supports farming, fishing, foraging, animal raising, crafting and home construction. Relationships with residents of Camp Ashfield are another named system, giving the game a social layer alongside resource management and combat.

Exploration areas
Listed locations include forests, abandoned towns, ruined buildings and dangerous sewers. These areas provide the setting for scavenging and discovery, but the official materials do not assign specific loot tables, enemy levels or recommended day ranges to each location.
Demo length, carryover and platforms
The demo contains 50 in-game days and roughly 10 hours of gameplay on default settings. That estimate is tied to the default configuration; a Hardcore run can take a different amount of real-world time depending on combat decisions, exploration and how cautiously a player manages resources.

Progress made in the demo carries into the full game. The full release is still in development, so the carryover promise is useful for players who want to begin learning the systems now, but final-release features and timing may change as development continues.

How to approach a no-death run
The event rules do not prescribe a winning strategy, and the official announcement does not publish balance data or a recommended route. Players can nevertheless organize their attempt around the systems the demo explicitly provides.
- Secure routine supplies first: Farming, fishing, foraging and animal raising can reduce dependence on risky scavenging trips.
- Build before overextending: Crafting and a home base give the run a safer foundation for storing resources and preparing equipment.
- Separate progress from score chasing: Zombie kills determine the leaderboard only after a player completes all 50 days, so unnecessary combat can jeopardize an eligible finish.
- Record the final result: The required proof is a screenshot of the final scorecard, so verify that it is readable before submitting.
These are practical risk-management principles rather than published scoring exploits. The event materials do not state tie-break rules, submission limits, regional eligibility terms or when winners will be contacted; entrants should check the event form for those conditions before sending a scorecard.
Why the event matters for the demo
The challenge gives Steam Next Fest visitors a concrete way to sample Ashfield Hollow’s combined systems instead of treating the demo as a short combat preview. A single run can involve base building, food production, exploration, social relationships and real-time fights, while the fixed preset makes submitted attempts comparable at a basic rules level.
For players who do not want a leaderboard attempt, the same demo remains a free introduction to the setting and mechanics. Keyboard-and-mouse, controller and Steam Deck support broaden how it can be played, and the stated progression carryover means time spent learning Camp Ashfield is not intended to be isolated from the eventual full game.
