Asha Sharma’s plan for Xbox is a two-track portfolio strategy: keep creating original games and properties for new audiences while putting more resources behind the franchises that already have global recognition. The approach also treats those franchises as entertainment brands that can extend into film, television, products, live experiences and partnerships.
That is a strategic direction, not a release roadmap. October 2026 reporting does not identify a complete list of new projects or give dates for them, and it does not confirm a new policy for Xbox exclusives.

What Sharma is changing at Xbox
Sharma’s appointment places portfolio choices at the center of Xbox’s next phase. The company wants to grow original intellectual property without allowing the cost and risk of new development to crowd out its most established series. At the same time, it is looking at games as the foundation of broader entertainment properties rather than as isolated software releases.

In her appointment announcement, Sharma described Xbox as the steward of “some of the most loved stories and characters in entertainment” and said the company wants to bring players and creators together around gaming’s fun and community in new ways. That language points to a wider remit than shipping games, but it does not replace game development as the core business.

Is Xbox making new IP or relying on existing franchises?
Original games remain a stated priority
Gamereactor’s October 2026 coverage reports that Sharma reaffirmed the need to create original games and properties capable of reaching different audiences. New IP gives Xbox a way to enter genres, markets or player communities that its current portfolio may not serve well. It also creates the possibility of future long-running franchises instead of relying indefinitely on the same brands.
Established series receive the heavier concentration of resources
The other half of the plan is deeper investment in the biggest franchises. Those series already have audience awareness, communities and commercial infrastructure, so new content can reach players more efficiently than an unknown property. The trade-off is familiar: concentrating on proven brands can improve predictability, but it leaves less room for experimentation if greenlighting decisions become too conservative.
| Portfolio lane | Purpose | What is established | What is not established |
|---|---|---|---|
| New intellectual property | Reach different audiences and create future properties | Sharma has reaffirmed the need for original games and properties | No complete project slate or release timetable was given |
| Major existing franchises | Build on recognition, communities and proven reach | Xbox intends to strengthen investment in its leading series | No title-by-title budget or launch schedule was disclosed |
This is best understood as a balance rather than a choice between sequels and new ideas. The strategic question for each project will be how it contributes to audience reach, platform health and the long-term strength of the portfolio.

Why hardware and the Xbox platform still matter
Microsoft’s leadership announcement frames gaming around three connected pillars: hardware, content and community. Windows Central’s interview coverage likewise describes a renewed focus on Xbox’s core platform. That makes the console and the services around it economically important even while Xbox pursues wider distribution.
Platform health affects which games can be funded, how communities are supported and how content reaches players. Xbox can consider console, PC and cloud distribution as parts of one ecosystem, but the available reporting does not establish a new exclusivity policy or promise that every future game will launch everywhere. Wider reach can grow audiences; distinctive content and healthy hardware demand can strengthen the platform. Sharma’s strategy has to manage both goals.
What Xbox XP means by “brands”
The brand expansion is organized through XP, a division led by President Kayleen Walters. The official XP announcement says it covers four investment areas and is intended to help franchises reach more people, build deeper connections with existing players and attract new fans worldwide.

| XP area | Role in the strategy |
|---|---|
| Xbox Pictures | Film and television development connected to Xbox properties |
| Xbox Products | Consumer products and merchandise that extend fandom beyond software |
| Xbox Places | Live experiences that give fans physical or event-based ways to engage |
| Xbox Partnerships | Work with creators, brands and communities on broader collaborations |
XP does not mean Xbox is abandoning games for movies or merchandise. Games remain the source material and the community engine; the division gives successful properties additional ways to be discovered and enjoyed. Its partnership remit could support licensed goods, attractions, sponsorships or creator collaborations, but the announcement does not identify a specific unannounced deal.

The scale behind the strategy
Satya Nadella’s official announcement of Sharma’s appointment says Microsoft’s gaming business reached more than 500 million monthly active users in 2026. That company-reported figure gives Xbox an unusually broad starting audience for both new releases and brand extensions; it also raises the standard for execution, because projects must work across a large and geographically diverse ecosystem rather than only for a single console market.

Microsoft’s XBOX Wire announcement provides a specific example of how a game can become a larger property. It says Minecraft grew from 350 million units sold to more than 425 million during Kayleen Walters’ tenure at Mojang, and that Minecraft merchandising became one of the top 20 globally. Those figures are company-reported, but they illustrate why Xbox is investing in products, partnerships and experiences alongside software.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What this means for future Xbox announcements
Readers should evaluate upcoming announcements against five practical questions:
- Portfolio balance: Is the project a genuinely new property or another entry in an established series?
- Distribution: Which combination of Xbox hardware, PC, cloud or other platforms is confirmed?
- Brand extension: Is there an actual film, product, live-event or partnership announcement, or only a broad ambition?
- Execution evidence: Are a studio, development status and release window named?
- Economic purpose: Is the project primarily intended to grow player reach, strengthen the platform, deepen engagement or serve several of those goals?
Those questions separate a strategic statement from a concrete commitment. Sharma’s comments establish the direction, but they do not yet answer every project-level question.

Will Xbox exclusives come back?
There is no confirmed answer in the October reporting. The strategy ties content decisions to platform health, studio execution and audience reach, which leaves room for different distribution choices from one project to another. Nothing cited here announces a return to a fixed exclusivity window, names a specific exclusive or sets a timetable.
The clearest conclusion is therefore limited but meaningful: Xbox is trying to expand both the number of people who can encounter its properties and the number of ways they can engage with them, while preserving hardware and platform economics as part of the business.
