May 31, 2024 was not a universal “all ad blockers stop working” deadline. YouTube had already been testing anti-ad-block measures since 2023, and enforcement has continued to vary by browser, account, region, extension, filter-list version, and even individual sessions.
If the aim is reliable desktop blocking rather than a quick userscript experiment, the practical answer is Firefox with the official full uBlock Origin extension. Chrome users have fewer options because Chrome’s Manifest V2 restrictions removed the version of uBlock Origin with its full filtering capabilities.

The best option: Firefox plus full uBlock Origin
Install uBlock Origin from the official Mozilla Add-ons site. Check that the publisher is Raymond Hill; similarly named extensions and unofficial download packages are not equivalent.

#1 Best Overall
- Open Firefox and visit the official uBlock Origin listing.
- Install the add-on published by Raymond Hill.
- Open YouTube and test a video.
- If ads or an anti-ad-block warning appears, click the uBlock Origin toolbar icon.
- Click the dashboard/settings gear.
- Open Filter lists and click Update now.
- Reload the YouTube tab.
uBlock Origin normally updates its subscribed lists automatically, but manually selecting Update now is a sensible first fix after ads suddenly return. A browser restart is usually unnecessary.
Do not paste random YouTube fixes into My filters
Search results and forums often circulate snippets labelled “YouTube anti-adblock fix”. Avoid blindly adding them under Dashboard → My filters. A custom filter can do more than hide an element: depending on what is supplied, it may alter page behaviour or execute unwanted code. Use maintained, reputable filter lists and inspect any custom rule before adding it.
What Chrome users can use
The original full uBlock Origin is a Manifest V2 extension. Chrome’s Manifest V2 phase-out means it is no longer a dependable general-user solution on current Chrome releases. Chrome 138 was the final version with an enterprise-policy route for continuing to use Manifest V2, and Manifest V2 extensions stop functioning in Chrome 139 and later. Remaining Manifest V2 extensions were scheduled for removal from the Chrome Web Store on August 31, 2026.

That makes unofficial downloads such as an old chromium.zip build a poor recommendation. Such a package may fail to load, lose automatic updates, or be disabled by a later browser update.
Option 1: uBlock Origin Lite
uBlock Origin Lite is the official Chrome-compatible, Manifest V3-based product. It is not the same extension as full uBlock Origin. Chrome’s declarative filtering model gives it less flexibility, so it should not be expected to behave identically.
Its available modes are:
| Mode | What to expect |
|---|---|
| No filtering | The extension does not filter the site. |
| Basic | Standard declarative filtering, with fewer advanced page-level changes. |
| Optimal | The normal stronger setting, adding specific cosmetic and scriptlet filtering. |
| Complete | Adds generic cosmetic filtering, which can improve coverage but may occasionally affect performance or page behaviour. |
To increase coverage on YouTube:
- Open YouTube in Chrome.
- Click the uBlock Origin Lite toolbar icon.
- Use the filtering-mode control in the popup.
- Select Optimal or, if necessary, Complete.
- Approve Chrome’s permission prompt if it asks to let the extension read and change data on websites.
- Reload YouTube.
Even in Complete mode, uBlock Origin Lite may allow some video ads or fail temporarily when YouTube changes its player. That is a limitation of MV3’s declarative system, not necessarily a defective installation.

Option 2: AdGuard Browser Extension
AdGuard Browser Extension also has a maintained MV3 version for Chrome. Its documentation says it can block advertisements and trackers, including video ads, while acknowledging the technical limitations imposed by MV3.

AdGuard and uBlock Origin Lite are reasonable Chrome alternatives, but neither can promise permanent YouTube coverage. YouTube can change its ad delivery and detection systems faster than filter lists can be updated.
What about Tampermonkey scripts?
There are userscripts claiming to remove YouTube ads or suppress the warning dialog, but none should be described as a stable, independently verified permanent solution.
A userscript generally modifies the page after it loads. It does not provide the same network-request filtering capabilities as a full content blocker. A script may work for a few days, then fail when YouTube changes its player, class names, warning flow, or ad insertion method.
For example, RemoveAdblockThing is an open-source project, but its maintainer says it is no longer actively maintained and recommends uBlock Origin instead. Other scripts on Greasy Fork may work for some users, but their install counts or user claims are not proof of continued compatibility.
Be especially careful with scripts copied from Pastebin, an unverified gist, or an unfamiliar file host. A Tampermonkey script can run on matching pages and may read page content, modify sessions, or redirect traffic. Before installing one:

- Prefer a maintained repository with a visible commit history.
- Read the complete source rather than relying on the description.
- Check the script’s
@matchand@includerules. - Look for network requests, remote code loading, redirects, cookie access, and obfuscated JavaScript.
- Remove it if the author cannot explain what those permissions are for.
A script that tells Tampermonkey to download and execute changing JavaScript from a remote server deserves particular suspicion.
Fixes for common problems
“Allow YouTube ads” appears even though the blocker is installed
The warning does not prove that the extension has stopped functioning. YouTube says that extensions affecting playback can also trigger the problem. Test with only one ad blocker enabled, then temporarily disable other privacy extensions, VPN filtering, DNS-based blockers, antivirus web protection, and browser-level blocking.
With full uBlock Origin, update the lists through Dashboard → Filter lists → Update now, then reload YouTube. Do not immediately stack several blockers together; their injected changes can conflict and make diagnosis harder.
Ads returned after an extension update
First update the filter lists manually and reload the tab. If the issue affects only one browser profile, test YouTube in a private window with the required extension permission enabled, or create a clean profile. If it affects every profile, the likely cause is a YouTube-side change or a filter update that has not caught up.
uBlock Origin Lite blocks ordinary page ads but not every YouTube ad
That is an expected possibility. Lite uses Chrome’s MV3 declarative filtering model and has fewer capabilities than full uBlock Origin. Optimal and Complete modes add more page-level filtering, but they do not remove the underlying platform restrictions.
Full uBlock Origin stopped working in Chrome
On current Chrome versions, this is generally the Manifest V2 transition rather than a YouTube-specific fault. Moving to Firefox restores access to full uBlock Origin. Staying with Chrome means accepting the limitations of uBlock Origin Lite, AdGuard’s MV3 extension, or another supported MV3 blocker.

Can SponsorBlock replace an ad blocker?
No. SponsorBlock skips user-submitted sponsor segments inside videos. It does not generally block YouTube’s pre-roll or mid-roll advertising system. It can complement an ad blocker, but it is not a substitute for one.

FAQ
Did YouTube permanently break every ad blocker on May 31, 2024?
No. May 31 was not a universal cutoff. YouTube’s anti-ad-block enforcement began rolling out earlier and continues to vary by browser, account, region, session, and filter-list version.
Is full uBlock Origin still available for Chrome?
The original full uBlock Origin is a Manifest V2 extension and is no longer a dependable solution on current general-user Chrome releases. Use Firefox for full uBlock Origin, or use a supported MV3 option such as uBlock Origin Lite.
Which uBlock Origin Lite mode should I use on YouTube?
Start with Optimal. If it does not provide enough coverage, try Complete. Complete adds generic cosmetic filtering but can occasionally affect performance or page behaviour.
Are Tampermonkey YouTube ad-blocking scripts safe?
Some may be harmless, but none should be assumed safe or permanently compatible. Read the complete source, use a maintained repository, and avoid scripts that load unreviewed remote JavaScript or come from unfamiliar file hosts.
The Bottom Line
For the most capable current desktop setup, use Firefox with the official full uBlock Origin add-on, and update its filter lists through Dashboard → Filter lists → Update now. On Chrome, use uBlock Origin Lite in Optimal or Complete mode, or a current MV3 AdGuard extension, while accepting that coverage may be less consistent. Tampermonkey scripts exist, but none is a verified permanent answer—and random scripts or filter snippets can create a bigger security problem than the ads.
