It is Luca Guadagnino’s dramatized account of the people and power struggles behind OpenAI, with the 2023 firing and return of Sam Altman at its center. Andrew Garfield’s Altman and Yura Borisov’s Ilya Sutskever give the film compelling human anchors; whether its satire adds up to a great drama is where critics disagree.
What is Artificial about?
Written by Simon Rich, Artificial follows the development of machine-learning research and OpenAI across roughly two decades. Film at Lincoln Center’s 64th New York Film Festival listing begins in 2003, with Ilya Sutskever studying neural networks under Geoffrey Hinton, before moving toward Sutskever’s later encounter with entrepreneur Sam Altman. The story reaches the 2023 leadership crisis in which Altman was fired and then returned as OpenAI’s CEO.

This is a dramatization of real people and events, not a documentary. Its subject is both the research effort and the human contest over who directs a powerful technology company. That combination makes the film’s central question less about explaining how a model works than about how ambition, institutional authority and trust collide around its creators.

Does it deserve to be called the real sequel to The Social Network?
The phrase works as a critical comparison, not a claim of shared story or franchise connection. Both films invite viewers to look at technology through the people and institutions that accumulate power around it. In Artificial, the relevant test is whether the conflict between founders and colleagues makes its technical and ethical stakes legible, and whether the film’s stylization sharpens that conflict or overwhelms it.
#1 Best Overall
- The story of the founders of the social networking website Facebook, and how overnight success and wealth changed their lives.
Nick Schager of The Daily Beast calls it the “true sequel to The Social Network,” describing it as a cautionary tale, horror show and tragedy. He praises Garfield and Borisov while criticizing other choices. Owen Myers takes a different view in The Guardian: he reads the film as stylish, blunt satire, but argues it feels more like an op-ed than a movie and offers little insight into what drives Altman and the technology elite. These are distinct critical responses, not evidence of a settled consensus.
How do Garfield and Borisov perform?
Garfield plays Altman and Borisov plays Sutskever; Mark Rylance plays Hinton. The casting puts the film’s central institutional conflict into two contrasting figures: the entrepreneur at the center of OpenAI’s public rise and the researcher whose work and later actions are bound up with the company’s leadership crisis. Schager singles out both lead performances, while the Guardian’s reservations about the film’s limited insight point to a useful distinction: convincing portrayals can give a story force without resolving every question about the real people they depict.

At the NYFF premiere, Garfield said he had initially found Altman impressive after seeing him testify to Congress, but that his view changed as he learned more. Variety reported that Garfield spent “two to three months” listening to and watching footage of Altman in preparation. He said, “We need to shine the light as bright as possible at the nooks and crannies of people we’re giving all of our autonomy and power to,” according to Variety. That statement explains Garfield’s approach to the role; it does not independently establish the film’s accuracy.

What do the real people say about the portrayal?
Altman’s expectations and the actors’ accounts are reactions, not verification. Variety reported Altman’s response in a Vanity Fair interview: “I mean, they’re trying to make a good movie, and maybe it will be good,” followed by his prediction that “it will not be good as an accurate depiction.” That is his stated view before the film’s accuracy can be assessed independently.

There is also a reported disagreement about filming outside Altman’s home. Vanity Fair’s premiere report quotes Garfield saying, “If that happened, I must have blacked out,” while disputing Altman’s recollection that he saw Garfield filming outside. Garfield said the production filmed outside the house but that he did not see Altman that day. The two accounts do not resolve what Altman observed.
At the same Q&A, Rich said he had worried about AI for years and recalled that a childhood friend working at OpenAI showed him material about a year before ChatGPT’s release that he found terrifying. That is Rich’s recollection of his own reaction; it does not establish what technology he saw.

The film premiered at the 2026 New York Film Festival and is listed for a BFI London Film Festival presentation. The NYFF listing and BFI listing confirm festival contexts, while the Associated Press reported that NEON acquired the nearly complete film and planned a 2026 release. These listings do not establish current showtimes or general home-viewing availability, which can change. Check NEON or the relevant festival for current screening information.
The AP also described the production budget as approximately $40 million and noted Amazon MGM had dropped the film in the context of Amazon’s announced $50 billion investment in OpenAI. Those figures provide reported business context; they do not establish why Amazon MGM dropped the film. The distribution account is reported by the Associated Press.
