What is Artificial about?
Luca Guadagnino directs a screenplay by Simon Rich. Film at Lincoln Center’s listing for the 64th New York Film Festival describes a story that begins in 2003, with Ilya Sutskever studying neural networks under University of Toronto professor Geoffrey Hinton, then follows Sutskever’s path to a meeting with entrepreneur Sam Altman. The film spans two decades of machine-learning research and turns toward the OpenAI story, with questions about the boundaries between people and machines, and truth and lies. Film at Lincoln Center’s festival listing identifies it as a 2026 US film, a world premiere and a main-slate selection.

The listing gives the runtime as 140 minutes. Andrew Garfield plays Altman and Yura Borisov plays Sutskever; the cast also includes Mark Rylance, Monica Barbaro, Cooper Hoffman, Ike Barinholtz, Jason Schwartzman and Chris O’Dowd. Damon Albarn wrote the original songs and score. These are festival-listed credits, not an indication of how much each performer appears in the finished film.
What does the Guardian review think works?
Owen Myers’s October 6, 2026 review in The Guardian calls the film a “stylish and blunt satire.” Its stance on Altman is deliberately clear: the review describes the film as presenting him as an amoral manipulator. Myers praises Garfield’s performance as “brilliantly slimy,” and says that some moments are genuinely chilling.

The review singles out a late monologue by Altman about the consequences of opening Pandora’s box as a particularly effective moment. That points to the film’s strongest dramatic possibility: turning abstract fears about powerful technology into a confrontation between people who believe they can control what they have set in motion.
Why does the satire feel muddled?
For Myers, the problem is not that the film lacks a position; it is that the position is so unambiguous that it leaves little room for discovery. The review argues that Artificial offers limited insight into Altman, the wider tech elite or the culture that welcomed them. Its verdict that the film feels more like an op-ed than a movie describes a gap between stating a judgment and building a sufficiently searching drama around it.
The review’s examples show how tone and analysis work against each other. It finds the jokes broad, with Barinholtz’s Elon Musk resembling a Saturday Night Live-style impression. It also regards some visual metaphors as too obvious, including a character wearing VR goggles and a simulator-like car sequence over the Golden Gate Bridge. Such choices can make the satire legible, but Myers’s criticism is that they underline the point rather than complicate it.

That tension is the useful way to read the film’s mixed assessment: stylistic ambition and satirical bite do not automatically produce analytical depth, while a forceful performance does not by itself broaden a film’s view of the society around its central character. The Guardian review credits Artificial with moments of menace and a memorable lead turn, but finds its tonal shifts and bluntness limit what it reveals.

What did the filmmakers say at the premiere?
At the NYFF premiere, Rich framed the film as an attempt to sound an alarm: “So in my last-ditch effort to warn mankind I wrote this movie…and I hope to God that it helps people pay attention.” Guadagnino said, “The machine can get out of control, particularly if it’s a tool in the hands of the interests of very few. I think that’s really exactly the point for me.” Garfield, speaking at the post-premiere Q&A, said, “I feel like we need to shine the light as bright as possible on the nooks and crannies of the people that we’re giving all of our autonomy and power to.” Chris Murphy reported the remarks for Vanity Fair. They clarify the filmmakers’ stated intentions; they do not settle whether the film’s satire achieves the depth its subject invites.
When is Artificial being released?
At the time of the October 6, 2026 review, the reported schedule was a US theatrical release on December 25, 2026, with Australia dated January 21, 2027, and the UK January 27, 2027. The US date was reported in The Guardian’s September 8, 2026 report; its October review gives the Australia and UK dates. Release plans can change, so check local listings for current availability.
