‘Artificial’ Review: Luca Guadagnino’s Dark, Campy Comedy Turns OpenAI’s Rise Into Satire

Artificial turns OpenAI’s origin story and Sam Altman’s 2023 firing and return into a stylized, darkly comic drama. Luca Guadagnino’s film is pointed about the people building supposedly smarter machines, but its broad jokes and blunt satire may leave viewers wanting more human insight than it provides.

What is Artificial about?

Directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Simon Rich, Artificial traces two decades of machine-learning research before arriving at the crisis that shook OpenAI in November 2023. Its story begins in 2003, with Ilya Sutskever studying artificial neural networks under University of Toronto professor Geoffrey Hinton. It later follows Sutskever’s encounter with Sam Altman and moves toward Altman’s removal as CEO and return five days later, as reported by The Guardian.

The film’s historical sweep gives the leadership fight a larger frame: the rupture is not simply a boardroom twist, but part of an argument about who should steer powerful technology and what responsibility its builders owe the public. That is the film’s dramatic premise, not a claim that its scenes or dialogue are a documentary record.

Is Artificial a comedy?

It is a comedy, but not a light one. The film uses conspicuous stylization, broad humor and grotesque touches to satirize tech founders and the culture around them. The Guardian’s Owen Myers calls it a “campy comedy” and describes it as stylish, blunt satire. He also argues that the jokes can be broad and that the film sometimes feels more like an op-ed than a movie.

That criticism identifies the film’s central tension. Its comic exaggeration can make the absurdity of tech ambition feel vivid, but caricature can flatten the people the drama needs us to understand. Myers finds the script savage at points and notes that the film has chilling moments, even as he sees limited insight into Altman and the tech elite.

Film at Lincoln Center’s New York Film Festival listing takes a more affirmative view, promoting it as “thrilling, funny, and very human” and emphasizing its moral urgency. That is the festival’s framing; the disagreement between that humanist ambition and the film’s deliberately blunt comic mode is a useful way to approach it.

How the cast and style shape the story

Andrew Garfield plays Altman, with Yura Borisov as Sutskever and Mark Rylance as Hinton. Monica Barbaro plays Mira Murati, while Ike Barinholtz plays Elon Musk. Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman and Chris O’Dowd are also in the supporting cast, according to the New York Film Festival listing.

The Guardian’s review points to the Hinton–Sutskever dynamic, the film’s jokes about technology founders, its caricature of Musk and the clash over Altman’s leadership as key parts of its satirical approach. Those are dramatic portrayals of real people, not independently verified accounts of private conversations. Damon Albarn wrote the original songs and score, adding a musical element to Guadagnino’s heightened treatment.

How accurate is the film?

Guadagnino told Arianna Finos of la Repubblica that “A large part of the dialogue consists of things they actually said.” He also said, “The film was repeatedly vetted for accuracy by lawyers one hundred per cent.” Those are the director’s descriptions of the screenplay and its review process; they do not independently establish the accuracy of particular scenes or lines.

Guadagnino said he did not meet Altman because the filmmakers wanted to avoid even the slightest conflict of interest. The film should therefore be read as a dramatized interpretation of public events, not as a neutral or comprehensive account of OpenAI’s history.

Who made Artificial, and when does it come out?

The 2026 U.S. feature runs 140 minutes, according to Film at Lincoln Center, and had its world premiere at the 64th New York Film Festival in October 2026. NEON is the distributor. The Guardian’s October 6 review listed planned theatrical dates of December 25, 2026, in the United States, January 21, 2027, in Australia, and January 27, 2027, in the United Kingdom. These were reported plans at the time, not confirmation that the screenings subsequently took place.

The Associated Press reported that NEON acquired the film after Amazon MGM Studios withdrew from distribution. AP described the production as a nearly complete $40 million film. Amazon MGM’s stated position, as quoted by AP, was that the film would “be better served if it were released by a different studio.” The reason for that distribution decision should not be inferred from Amazon’s reported $50 billion investment in OpenAI: AP reported the investment as context, not as evidence of the company’s motive. Read AP’s report on the distribution change.

Verdict: a pointed but uneven tech satire

Artificial has a strong target: the collision between ambitious AI research, company power and the people claiming authority to guide the technology. Its two-decade scope makes the 2023 leadership crisis feel like the culmination of a longer argument, while its dark comedy gives that argument an intentionally abrasive edge. Whether that edge feels incisive or over-insistent is the key question; the Guardian’s reservations about broad humor and limited character insight are worth weighing against the festival’s stated humanist ambition.
