If AI labs buy less compute than lenders expect, he says, debt tied to that demand could come under pressure. Hayes’s next step in the argument is conditional: government support for compute or exposed financial institutions could add liquidity and, he predicts, benefit Bitcoin. Neither a rescue nor a Bitcoin rise is established or announced.
What Hayes means by “wasted” AI investment
Hayes’s criticism is about the economics of the buildout, not an audited tally of losses. In remarks at the Gamma Prime Investing Conference in Singapore, reported in a syndicated copy of CNBC’s coverage, he said humanity was “wasting multi-trillion dollars” on AI data centers. He also suggested that excess capacity could make compute “extremely cheap and extremely plentiful.” Those are Hayes’s characterizations and forecast, not independently measured findings. The syndicated report attributes the remarks to Hayes; CNBC’s original page was not accessible to the report’s researchers.

Why he thinks a demand slowdown could affect debt
In his September 21, 2026 essay, “Safety First”, Hayes connects the possibility of excess compute capacity to how data centers and chips are financed. His concern is that lenders and investors may have relied on AI labs continuing to buy large amounts of compute. If leading labs slow frontier-model training or prioritize efficiency, their future purchases might fall short of those expectations. That is a scenario Hayes proposes, not evidence that the labs have already cut orders or that the financing is currently failing.

Hayes estimates that more than $1 trillion in investment-grade debt, along with hundreds of billions of dollars in lower-credit-quality debt and loans, is backed by leading AI labs’ expected compute demand. That is his estimate in the essay; it is not an independently documented industry-wide total. His essay frames the key question this way: “The real question is who bought the debt, and did they do it using leverage?”
#1 Best Overall
- High-Performance AI Processor:The MS-02 Ultra features an Intel Core Ultra 9 285HX (24C/24T, up to 5.5 GHz, 13 TOPS NPU), delivering fast and efficient performance for AI inference, algorithm development, and media workloads. A PCIe x16 expansion slot supports desktop-class GPU upgrades for advanced model training and accelerated computing tasks. It's ideal for creators, engineers, and teams handling intensive parallel workloads.
- 4 × M.2 PCIe 4.0 + 4 × DDR5 SODIMM slots:Four DDR5 SODIMM slots support up to 256 GB of memory, while ECC helps maintain data integrity in mission-critical environments. Four PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots support up to 24 TB of storage, supporting RAID 0/1/5/10, combining high-speed performance with data protection. It allows for the creation of independent scratch disks, media libraries, and project drives, providing high-throughput for production workflows.
- PCIe & USB 4.0 v2: Up to three PCIe slots can be equipped, including a dual-slot x16 GPU. The main slot supports PCIe 5.0, meeting the needs of high-bandwidth creative and computing workloads. USB 4.0 v2 (80Gbps) supports high-bandwidth external storage and displays.
- Ultra-fast Networking: Wi-Fi 7 further enhances wireless performance with next-generation speeds and low-latency stability. Intelligent bandwidth switching optimizes throughput in different network environments, ensuring optimal performance for enterprise or local networks. Dual 25GbE ports (providing up to approximately 3.125 GB/s bandwidth, about 25 times faster than traditional 1GbE), enabling seamless large-scale file transfers and parallel computing. 10GbE and 2.5GbE ports, with support for Intel vPro technology, ensure enterprise-grade remote management and deployment flexibility.
- Server-grade thermal architecture: Utilizing a dedicated CPU/GPU airflow design, equipped with a 6-pipe dual-fan cooler, it maintains stable performance even under sustained loads, delivering up to 140W Turbo power while maintaining a 100W TDP, and operating with noise levels as low as 36 dB. An integrated 350W power supply ensures stable and reliable output for demanding computing tasks and fully loaded extended configurations.
What Hayes thinks could happen next
Hayes sketches two possible responses if weaker compute demand strains financing. Governments could become buyers of last resort for compute, or they could create money to support financial institutions exposed to the debt. He argues that either kind of intervention could increase liquidity and that this would be favorable for Bitcoin and crypto prices. These are hypothetical responses and Hayes’s market forecast—not announced policy or a demonstrated cause-and-effect outcome.
His essay’s position is explicit: if governments support what he sees as an unproductive investment, he expects more financial speculation and higher Bitcoin prices. Hayes is a crypto investor, and his argument presents the potential consequences as bullish for Bitcoin holders. That perspective is relevant when weighing a forecast that directly benefits the asset class he favors.

What would determine whether the thesis holds
The central question is whether durable demand and revenue can support the capacity being built—or whether compute supply will outpace what customers are willing to buy. Hayes emphasizes the demand-shortfall case: less training or more efficient AI could mean fewer compute purchases, cheaper capacity, and weaker assumptions behind related financing. The available reports do not establish which outcome will prevail or provide a comparison of realized AI revenue, data-center utilization, debt terms, and competing demand forecasts. Treat Hayes’s chain of reasoning as a conditional thesis, not a settled account of the AI market.
Quick Recap
- Current-debt claim: Hayes’s estimate of debt tied to expected AI-lab compute demand is his own, not an independently verified total.
- Market mechanism: Slower compute demand could leave capacity underused and challenge financing assumptions; that outcome remains conditional.
- Bitcoin prediction: A policy or financial-sector response could add liquidity, Hayes argues, but neither a rescue nor a resulting Bitcoin price increase is established.
